    Back pain after deadlifting

I've began working out again after an 8 month hiatus. I had been making good strides getting back to where I was and so I was eager to Deadlift as they were my favorite exercise but I couldn't get comfortable as once was. One day I went up in weight considerably and in the middle of the second rep(which is like really the first rep) it appearred that my grip was too close so I tries to adjust my grip while still coming up(should've dropped the weight) and lost concentration and rolled my back. I got it up and continued to do 4 more reps but felt a little funny. Now in my lower back on my left side I feel a "catch". I only feel it when making certain movements but it's a sharp and deep pain(I tried to get it massaged but could get deep enough). Funny thing is I can still deadlift without any pain. I'm lifting much lghter now but after lifting say 185lbs. 20 times I drop the weight and go to pivot away from the rack and bang! A little sharp pain.

My question is, what the hell is this? How long will it take to go away? What can I do speed up the process? Since doing deadlifts and prone extension don't hurt and actually kinda numbs the pain can I still do them or am I causing more damage?

#1) Are you deloading between reps? Do it if you're not.
#2) You injured your back, take some time off untill it's better
#3) Check your form again to make sure it's safe

No I don't reload during reps.

What kind of back injury do you think I have? How long off?

I know my postures correct again as I do not experience any pain or discomfort during the excercise and I've deadlifted enough to feel when I'm doing something wrong.

Yes they will re-adjust your back and have you probably take a week off, and after that you will be close to 100%

DieselWeasel showed that you can lift a lot with bad form and escape pain sometimes. Have someone who knows deadlifts watch you or videotape yourself to make sure your form is clean.

It may not be that, but you'd hate to get better to break all over again.

Maybe your right. I will video tape myself. Chiropractor? Anyone have experience with a chiropractor? I didn't really consider that.
