The Importance of focus (plateau breaking)

    Hello all,
I am not exactly new, but I am new to posting here. Some background:
I've been lifting for about 3 years and I have a good knowledge base (IMO of course) about training and nutrition.

I recently had quite a break through in my lifting experience. A friend of mine decided to begin a Phera-Plex cycle (A newer supp that gives almost steroid like gains if you are unfamilliar...of course it requires liver support etc etc, so it is no easy fix mind you). I decided for no particular reason to challenge him while on his cycle. I bet him that I could increase my 6-rep bench Press 20 lbs. before he could. The kicker here is that my 6-rep bench had bounced between 205 and 225 over the last TWO YEARS (this is no exageration!)... never above (I didn't really expect to beat him lol).
Low and behold, on a basic 4-day split with chest day on Monday and 3 sets of bench on friday, I was able to increase my 6-rep max 5 lbs. every work out for 2 weeks, going from 230 - 250. I cannot remember seeing gains like this... ever. I credit it all to motivation and focus. The Friday before the Monday that would be the 2-week mark, I was only able to do 245 for 5 reps. That following Monday (the day he swore he'd hit his goal) my buddy succesfully completed his 20 lb increase goal of 195x6. After seeing this, I somehow managed to obtain the focus and determination to match him, and I did my goal of 250x6, and could have done 8. All it took was that little bit of a mental kick in the ass.

To stress the importance of focus, the following workout after I completed 250x6, I attempted 255x6 and only managed 4. Looking back I have no second thought as to why. I was tired and completely out of focus... and lifting alone so that little motivation wasn't there.
For those wondering I am supplementing with CEE and whey.

So, having trouble with a plateau? Try a challenge of some sort, nobody likes to lose!

Focusing on a number you want to reach for certain lifts also works.

A pic of your "idol", the body you want.

Or a pic of a girl you like, and want to look good around her.

Being pissed off also works at times

i agree. with most sports and athletics, mental focus is a part of it. i don't think everyone can get those kinds of gains from focusing, but i do consider it an integral part of work outs.
when you have to shoot, then shoot, don't talk.
