Quick question. Given that alcohol is supposed to be mostly empty calories. If I did keto and drank a couple of nights a week, would I still go into ketosis?

alcohol isnt really an empty calorie. infact for every gram of alcohol there are 7 calories, and whilst its in ur system, everything else stops until ur body has rid itself of it

Yep.
I can get away with drinking while on keto about once every ten days to two weeks without stalling results. Any more than that and it seems to ruin the whole program. Like others have said, just stay away from booze while doing this type of diet.
I don't see how anyone could expect to have drinks a couople of times a week yet still improve their health. It's like scratching up your car with a fork in order to improve the paint job.

Yes, drinking alcohal can and will kick you out of ketosis.
It will also add a bunch of unwanted calories to your diet, and reek havok on your body.
Drinking is not healthy!
Also, if you have to ask that questions about alcohal you really should reconsider either 1 of 2 things:
1. drinking as much as you do
2. living a healthy lifestyle
The 2 do not go along with one another.
Sounds like you need to make a choice, and the fact that you are seeking out help here means that this is a struggle for you.
It lets us know how important drinking is to you, and how much you are potentialy willing to sacrafice to keep drinking.
Why not go in to a bar and ask them how they feel about you doing the keto diet, and whether it will interfer with your ability to get drunk or not? doesnt make much sense right?
Neither does drinking 3 times per week while trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

Yeah don't forget alcohol is a "poison" so your liver will deal with it and try to detox it. Which suspends protein synthesis.
Also about 3 years ago when I was cutting hardcore, someone told me Absolut vodka has no calories, so I drank that straight anytime I'd go out. (I still saw results, hindered but they came) But boy was I wrong on that one lol
Now I basically let most of my friends know where I am at, so yeah I'm that guy that asks for the water. Although I'll drink here and there, very moderately, but only for very special occasions. And I don't mean pounding 5 beers. More like 1 or 2 drinks at max.
Drinking for me outweighs the bad vs the good.Last edited by konradac; 02-13-2008 at 09:20 AM.

i have a hard time not drinking myself...it's a struggle for me to make it through a weekend and not get drunk. but just keep in your head...if you've gone this long without it, you can surely do it again, right? plus when you get drunk it's really easy to eat those peanut butter crackers, or pringles, etc...drinking and dieting just don't go together, at all.

only if there is sugar in it. otherwise all it acheives is "pausing" ketosis
most commonly accepted definition u could find is a food source with no micronutritional value, which can include things like butter, which DO have macronutritional value. personally i always used the term in reference to things that had no macronutritional value or real effect on the metabolic process. broccoli for example is empty coz it often has more fibre than carbs = empty or negative, however it has real micronutritional value. alcohol basically pausing ur system i interpreted as having an effect macronutritionaly and thus not being "emtpy".
i see what u mean tho and i probably should hav clarified what i was saying better. the real issue is though theres no official definition."Just do the diet, lift hard and take pictures of yourself naked. As long as the scale is going down, your lifts are going up and your pix look good, ignore everything else." - Eileen

Beej im going to have to agree with stevenhyu...Alcohol is an empty calorie you get nothing from it...Pop is an Empty calorie as well...Things that are Empty calories are things that you gain nothing from except for calories...Like alcohol, you get no benefit (other than the psychological)...hence an empty calorie

if you want a drink.
straight whiskey, vodka, bacardi types are fine.
they have no carbs..and will only stall ketosis.
remember:
1. you get drunk way faster on low carb.
2. drink hard liqour with diet coke..but also drink a 8 0z glass of water inbetween..you may have to piss every 20 min or so..but its worth it.
3. do 30 min of extra cardio on the day you will drink..if you burn off 250 calories..that will take care of the 250 calories you injest.
4. dont sit on your ass and drink...drink and stand up..walk around some..be active..party/club/bar...this will help keep your metabolic rate up.
5. HAVE FUN...life is there to have fun.
would I love to have 5 extra lbs of fat loss? HELL YEA..but I also like to have a good time.
if I am losing fat at 80 percent on keto because I have some drinks...thats MUCH BETTER THAN GAINING FAT OR BEING AT ZERO PERCENT BECAUSE IM A LAZY ASS AT HOME.
so I will be ripped on May 1st instead of April 1st so be it..
I am 25 and not getting younger

From someone who's struggled with drinking for quite a while now, results are without a doubt different when you drink and when you don't. For my body drinking 2x a week pretty much stops progress. You may be different though. I have yet to find that sweet spot where I'm happy with my progress and I can still drink.
5 years of working out and 50 more to go.

hey
i am gonna go for camping and will be partying for 3 nights.
i drink only whisky and vodka which do not contain sugar
how can i count calories..do i have to set the calories apart for example daily calories minus alcohol..
and after 2400-500 is equal to 1900
i can apply keto ratios over 1900 calories...
