    Squats....belt or no belt?

I've been doing them without a belt recently and have felt no stress on my lower back. I was wondering if any others squat without belts. Those that do squat with belts, have you ever squatted without, and if so, why did you go back to a belt?

I got nasty back spasms doing squats years ago and they sometimes come back. I wasn't using a belt then, but I really think the problem was I tried to lift too much weight without being warmed up enough. Anyway, I now use a belt for my heaviest lifts, but warm up without it. I think it's a personal choice.

    You don't need a belt..........ever.

If you worried about any complications that squats might cause, there is a simple technique that fixes this problem-PAUSE AT THE BOTTOM-this takes the moementum out of the lift which saves your knees, and it doesn't allow for you to use your lower back as much (provided you don't lean forward and you aren't using too much weight). This will develop your NATURAL WEIGHT BELT (strong core), which you always wear.

Exactly, if you wear a belt you will become reliant on it, it takes away the stress from the midsection and it doesnt develope. One thing I love about squats is how they work your core. Wearing a belt does more harm than good.

belts do not support the disks on a segmental level, the disks that are supported by the belt get partially immobilized. which leads to the disksbelow the belt taking all movement.

if you're pl'ing and 1RM'ing, I could see use for it, but not casual lifting - using it takes away from your core and makes you more likely to get injured if you squat w/o it the next time.

I never use a belt under 80%, and I use it most of the time over 90. I do a lot of squats, deads and other exercises that works the core, so it gets sufficient training. I train squats and deads for strength as much as size though, dunno if I would use it if I was a pure bodybuilder.

Belt doesn't "stink", but they are certainly not necessary for bodybuilders.

You have seen those guys at the gym that has a belt that they wear during their whole workout - whether they are squatting or doing wrist curls. They think they are so cool and hardcore with their belts. They give me a laugh.

Personally I only use belts if I'm maxing, because I think people kind of learn to use them as a crutch...

I couldnt agree more. I figure as long as i keep my abs as strong they can be and train my lower back as well im wearing my belt. PLus I think people who wear a belt think the belt is going to save there form and this will lead to injury or losing techneic.
