Pre-bed: Casein powder shake vs Cottage cheese

(Yes, I did a search on this and couldn't find any specific comparison thread)

For a while now, I've been eating about half a tub (12oz of a 24oz tub) of CC before bed everynight. That's about 38g of protein.

However, I'm considering switching to a casein powder shake instead of CC before bed. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

It seems they both cost about the same for about the same quantity of protein... but the casein powder is MUCH MORE convenient because you simply mix it, drink, and your done in less than a minute. 12oz of CC takes much longer for me to down than that. A casein shake also has much less salt than CC. (I'm already in the habit of drinking a whey shake in the morning)

What should it be... casein shake of CC pre bed?

(Any recommendations for which brand of powder? As usual, Optimum seems to get high marks)

You know, I have been debating this same thing for quite some time now. Now, I have been doing fat free CC before bed for quite sometime, but about 4 days ago i switched to casein powder and PB. I think i like the Casein powder better because there isnt any carbs and i dont seem to be bloated in the morning. I may be sensitive to lactose, even though i love CC. So ill try the powder for a while and come back with better info. Hopefully someone else has better knowledge

You would not see a difference in results. Both are obviously valid sources of casein protein. Check out Xtreme Formulations Ultra Peptide for a solid product:

While casein is "optimal" before bed, don't forget that milk is 80% casein (the other 20% being whey), and if you mix your whey with some milk, and then throw in some natural peanut butter, olive oil, or other healthy fats--you can slow the absorbtion down quite a bit, thus "mimicking" casein protein.

Really, it comes down to personal perference.

i prefer cottage cheese for the sole reason that id rather get my protein from whole food sources. since youre taking a whey shake in the morning and im assuming one post workout, adding the casein powder is 3 shakes in a day. in my opinion, that is relying too much on supplements. although, there are some good casein powders out there. xtreme formulations seems to be the popular choice. i love vpx's graham cracker powder. the mrp's are casein based and include very solid ingredients not to mention taste amazing. SAN infusion is another good one i like as well as ISS casein banana. my old night time meal consisted of 1/2 cup cottage cheese, half scoop casein powder, cup of milk, and some peanut butter all mixed together. then, i add a chopped up apple to the mix and eat it like a bowl of cereal. tastes awesome, and is protein packed (mainly casein) with essential fats and fiber to further slow digestion.

I prefer a casein shake. I don't eat anything before I go to bed.

Nah.... on lift days I start with a little oatmeal instead, and save the whey shake for PWO (which tends to be in the morning also) I won't drink 2 whey shakes in one day.

So this would essentially be 2 shakes daily... one whey in the AM and one casein in the evening pre-bed.

Couln't you mix one scooop casein with 1/2 a cup or so of cotage cheese and then add some PB or something, and then get the best of both worlds?

I usually mix 1/2 a cup of CC with some Whey or another protein blend and some peanut butter and sometimes some berries.

I feel your better off using cottage cheese just due to it being a whole food source, although give it about 30 mins to 1 hour between eating and hitting the sack....

i don't think there's a problem nutritionally as both are comparable. the problem for me would be the liquid intake. i try to limit any liquids intake to a half cup or less 2 hours before sleep so i don't have my sleep interrupted getting up in the middle of the night to take a leak. i'm a light sleeper so i put lots of value in being able to get a good night's sleep.

I do both of them since casein powder is a lil on the expensive side. Casein shake + milk + cottage cheese + PB FTW! I don't give a **** about the bloat, i'm doing it to get big!

I usually don't take any shakes during the day usually.

At night I usually try to use cassein powder before I go to sleep. I love my cc don't get me wrong but the sodium is just so damn high.

Usually I'll just split it up though. Like said above several times

1/4 Cup CC, 1/2 Scoop Choc ON Cassein, 1 Cup Skim Milk. Perfect meal before bed..

shadowmoses - why wait an hour before bed to eat this? Usually I eat it then brush my fangs real quick and then hit the sack
The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and hear all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. So ill try the powder for a while and come back with better info. Hopefully someone else has better knowledge

Yea, I get the bloating as well.

My personal preference is milk + whey + peanut butter as posted earlier.

about 20g Whey & 20g Casein seems to be pretty good.
Keeps me satiated and full for a long time awake, so I know
it will do the same while asleep, without the extra fat and carbs...

Most probably, as I can down a gallon of milk in a day without any problems.

Before bed I mix 2 scoops of Optimum Nutrition Casein with 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed. I mix them together in a shaker then add about 6 ounces of water then mix vigerously. It makes it into a thick pudding and is filling.

I used to do cottage cheese(I eat the **** all day long anyway), but a few weeks ago I found these for $36 on what I assume was a pricing error.

So now I have 3 tubs of ON Casein. And holy **** the Vanilla casein tastes better than any whey product I've ever tasted.

How does ricotta cheese stack against cc? Is it lower sodium? Higher? Could I replace cc with some ricotta on toast(fcukin' NUMMY with some cinamin-sugar thrown on top)?
