I tried to open up a simple interest earning account as a means of investment, but was told that I required a minimum of $5,000 as an initial deposit. But such investments vary from bank to bank.
I know some brokers will allow you to purchase shares in companies for as little as $1,000, however such a venture is high risk if you don't know what you are doing (as the OP pointed out)Owe more reps to:

Many mutual fund companies allow you to open an account with as little as $50. But you do have to commit to putting in at least $50 month. But hey, if you're just getting started, that's a great way to do it.

A really good and helpful free site for investors of just about any market is ADVFN (Advanced Financial Network). It just about lets you day trade for free (as far as viewing the financial markets in real time). It also has forums, blogs, and tons of other information.
Other than that, there are a lot of different investment topics to discuss:
Stocks
Bonds
Precious metals
Foreign exchange
Money market
Savings Accounts
Certificates of Deposit
Real Estate
and so on.

First, what do you want to invest in? You could do something as simple as open up a PayPal premier account that acts as a money market account, which has around ~5% interest on it. I also recommend ING Direct.

if you want to invest in shares in australia then consider investing in mining companies.
also australian unity investment fund is doing pretty well in australia.
real estate is the best investment in my opinion but it requires a good capital.
right now i am working on imports/exports for coal/timber/electronics. who else is working on imports/exports or middle man?

Can someone find me a nice, easy to understand explanation of options trading? I read about it all the time in the paper, never fully understand what the hell it is..

Between you, me and the other regulars...we won't let that happen.
I'll wave the BS flag in an instant on anyone I suspect is pumping.
BTW...check out RGRP...it's going to the moon. LOL
J/K on the moon part but it does look like it might be breaking/broke its downtrend. On top of that you get positive divergence on macd...if volume shows up it could be a nice pop.
Any input?

I was just wondering how much research you guys put in before buying a stock.
I just recently started buying and have had a little beginners luck and bought a stock at 4.70 and in a day and half sold it at 6.05.
