AEW House of the Dragon (08/17/2022)

Not too many matches have been announced, so Bryan & Garcia might wrestle for a while. Bryan will win, but I think they'll let Garcia give him a solid beatdown: Garcia might take the first fall clean

Good chance that Kenny Omega returns in the Young Bucks' segment tonight

    How I would do Bryan/Garcia:

The 3 falls match opens the show. Garcia goes to the ring alone. Bryan's music hits, he storms the ring, grabs some kind of foreign object on the way, hits the ring and then proceeds to beat the fuk out of Garcia with it. Ref calls for it and gives Garcia a disqualification win. Bryan smirks. Ref is checking Garcia and reluctantly rings the bell for the second fall, Bryan lunges and locks in one of his submission moves, Garcia taps out in the middle. Bryan keeps it on, ref re-checks Garcia -- waves his arms around, they announce the last fall will be at the end of the show to give Garcia a chance to recoop.

Sometime during the show, Bryan is interviewed, then jumped and has the chit beaten out of him by the JAS until he's saved by his guys, but the damage is done and they can sell the head thing again.

3rd match end of show, Bryan is way more fuked up than Garcia, they have a match, Garcia starts hot, they back and forth, Bryan gains control one last time and wins.

glad kenny is coming back. i don't think he's the GOAT like so many soyfaces in their 20s do, but he's a star and this show has been severely lacking star power. it'll be fun to see the pop. he is the franchise of aew.

having the elite go over punk and ftr in a trios match and then let ftr get the win against the bucks in their rubber match and punk gets a successful title defense against kenny down the road would be cool

AEW is totally wasting Danielson. This isn't elevating Garcia, it's just devaluing BD. Nothing against Garcia, he might have some potential, but he should have been built up a lot before this.

pretty sure this is what danielson wants to be doing. i believe that if he really wanted it, they would'v given him the title run. i think he wants to get young work rate guys over.

i don't think garcia has it personally.

Anyone else find Danielson’s matches in the BCC as lesser? The flow just feels off. Technical for the sake of technical, and the commentary overkills it by breaking down fairly common armlocks and various holds like its the greatest thing since slice bread and nobody has ever seen them before.

JR and Taz should have STFU during that Gun Club, Acclaimed ordeal. Good god. JR is a parity of himself. Commentary team in general offers next to nothing to get anything over.

If it was WWE but AEW rarely does stuff like that, so I think a draw would be more likely. With CM Punk calling out Hangman Page and him doing nothing I’m kind of wondering if they’re planning on somehow getting to a triple threat.

There were some good lines that made me laugh tonight. He’s the third best Eddie and second best Kingston. You’re the third best guy in your group a recurring theme in your group.
    Scissor me daddy.

The poor varsity blonds, lost their girl, haven’t been on tv in a while, and when they get back on are in a rare AEW squash match and to the ass boys.

Kenny Omega being back is cool but the timing of the commercials was very annoying.

I thought Danielson vs Garcia was a good match and it will be interesting to see where this goes with Jericho.

Haven’t really followed Pillman but obviously well versed on his dad. Is there nothing there with him besides being in a dated tag team gimmick that gets squashed? Have seen him a few times on TV with nothing really doing. Would it hurt to just piggy back off the pedigree and have him “snap” on Griff at some point, and see where it takes him? Again, I don’t know Jr. more than seeing several TV spots, but some trial and error couldn’t hurt, and it couldn’t be any worse than what he’s got going now.

They’re basically both just jobbers to the stars in AEW. Although Pillman jr. has occasionally been featured prominently and gotten a good rub from people like Jericho and MJF they just never really follow up on it and he loses all of his momentum every time. He’s shown potential in MLW and AEW but never really given a chance to run with the ball, so who knows how he’d do.

A heel turn might be a good idea for him.

According to Meltzer, the Hangman Page stuff in CM Punk’s promo was Punk going into business for himself. Pretty messed up to call out someone in their hometown when they’re not scheduled to come out and to then call them a coward for not.

    So my thoughts:

1). I like the opening segment between Punk and Moxley. But I didn't feel they needed to do the second segment later, where they brawled again. Before tonight, Punk and Moxley had little to no interaction with each other, so they have no reason to personally hate one another; they haven't had a long or bloody rivalry. The way AEW had them come out a second time to brawl ... I just felt that AEW was trying too hard to create intensity and hatred in a situation where there logically shouldn't be any intensity or hatred.

2). I don't know why Punk just randomly called out (and embarrassed) Adam Page. Adam Page is still a babyface in the promotion, so why are they making him look like a sissy? And why is Punk mad at Hangman? Punk won his match, Page hasn't talked any smack about Punk since. What makes Punk call out Hangman?

3). They announced Moxley vs Punk next week. The way they advertised / hyped the encounter next week, I don't think they can make a U-turn now and decide not to do it; the live fans will revolt. At the same time, Moxley vs Punk next week takes a lot of wind out of the PPV. They don't have time to build a new main-event, and doing Moxley vs Punk rematch 2 weeks later would seem awkward for a PPV main-event. So AEW loses if they do the match next week, and AEW loses if they don't do the match next week. I hope they know what they're doing

4). I don't know about the tall redhead that Toni Storm wrestled, but they announced Toni vs Rosa at the PPV. I really think the storyline supports a fatal fourway, not a rematch between Toni and Rosa. And I don't know if they will just have Rosa win again ... perhaps they will pull the trigger on Toni at All Out?

5). Bryan vs Garcia was a great match, and they really protected Garcia: Garcia got the first fall clean (1st fall always indicates who the better man is), and Bryan got one of his wins by a lucky rollup. Before he beat Bryan a few weeks ago, I never paid any attention to Garcia. But I'm willing to give the dude a chance; maybe AEW can do something useful with him. And he's actually only 23-years-old

6). When Punk said that Kingston is the "third best Eddie," who are the other 2? There's Guerrero, and then ...?

7). Great to see Omega back. I usually hate these cluster 6-man tag matches, but the main-event last night had my attention the whole way.

8). Lastly -- I think AEW can bring MJF back now. It's been long enough

    1) Yup -- AEW hotshots a month's worth of segments into one show or segment. Just rush rush rush rush rush. Mox and Punk should have build up to this kind of heat.

    2) Don't know. Either he really likes or really dislikes him. I'm thinking he likes him and wants to work more with him. They're both pretty SJWy irl and Page is a solid worker and always has a good match.

    3) Wouldn't be the first time they give something away on free tv at the detriment of their big PPV's ME. Booker of the Year still has a lot to learn about pacing, IMO

    4) Dunno. Don't really care right now, tbh. That big pasty redhead, has she been on tv or wrestled? I can see her being a thing after some build, she's 6'1" legit, but having even a big nobody go so evenly with a so-called star? Doesn't make Storm look strong winning and they just had someone's first interaction to job, again. Toni Storm is completely gorgeous, though.

    5) Dunno, I think they better push Garcia hard here out against Jericho (who is gone to tour) or this quick momentum goes nowhere.

    6) Eddie Edwards was in ROH around the same time as Punk, maybe?

    7) Yes and while I don't mind the occasional Lucha trainwreck w/ wacky spots, I hope it's contained to the Trios Universe within AEW. I wonder where they're going w/ Omega. He's with a heel, Callis, but Callis was almost backhanded with his sloppy glowing praise, I think they're setting up Callis leaving Omega for that Osprey guy. Callis was glowing but also basically went through Kenny's list of injuries while doing it.

    8) Yes, yes and yes. I don't know how but just do it. Maybe a Pinnacle face reunion? Wardlow and FTR referred to themselves as that last night in their promo. I don't know how/why or how they explain it, but I just want MJF back.

If Hangman was there, got called out, could not go out b/c obv it wasn't in the script and he couldn't, THEN Punk called *him* a coward... lol, almost better than his abortion t-shirt. Love CM Punk the wrestler but I feel like Phil Brooks is a complete piece of chit.

don't mind the hotshotting of moxley vs. punk. tony needs to break a million and stay there. maybe hangman gets added to the main event at the ppv. he's got nothing going on. i'm not convinced that meltzer isn't in on the work.

fuking lol at ftr and wardlow facing zippy, sonjay and lethal at the ppv. ftr up until 2 weeks ago, one of your hottest acts. wardlow, up until about a month ago, one of your hottest acts. this is inexcusable.

i understand the bucks and kenny HAVE to be the first trios champions or the titles will mean nothing(and they will mean nothing eventually, but you can't start off that way i guess), but you could've found something better for ftr. i like jay lethal a lot. he's one of the best they've got, but they've presented him like chit. ftr goes from being the best tag team in the world to having wardlow's back against the job squad because why? bc they were in a stable together half a year ago?

fine the bucks won't do the job, let ftr go against swerve and keith at the ppv and give them the titles over those 2 who make no sense as a team and aren't really that over.

Fightful select confirms and expanded on Meltzer’s report:

CM Punk "may have almost decided to not come to Dynamite" last night, more on Hangman promo
CM Punk challenged Hangman Page to a rematch on the August 17 episode of AEW Dynamite, but according to Wrestling Observer, it wasn't planned. We were able to confirm this.

Punk defeated Hangman Page at AEW Double or Nothing earlier this year before being forced away from the ring for several months. Before that, however, there was word that Punk and Hangman Page didn't see eye to eye on some promo material that emerged on an episode of Dynamite that built their match. Fightful has been told that it was to the point that CM Punk met with AEW higher ups about the context of Hangman Page's promo. Voices of Wrestling had noted that they'd heard that Punk had told others after the meeting in May, that he wouldn't lose to Hangman Page.

Fightful was told by several within AEW that they felt the situation that unfolded on the August 17 episode of Dynamite was "unfair" to Hangman Page if he wasn't aware of it. One said "even if he was aware of it, what would he have done? Charged to the ring past Tony (Khan)? Interrupted a promo he knew he wasn't supposed to be a part of? There was no way Hangman could have 'won' in that situation." We're told Hangman Page was in the building, but haven't heard that he responded in any particular way. Those that we spoke to said that Hangman isn't a confrontational person and is generally well-liked among the roster.

The belief among several on the roster we spoke to was that Punk believed Hangman went into business for himself leading into their Double or Nothing match, and that Punk may have seen the August 17 promo as a "receipt." It's important to note that was locker room speculation as opposed to Punk telling anyone that directly. From Punk's end of things, the Hangman promo had alluded to Punk's issues with Colt Cabana, and happened during a week where Punk wasn't at the show, while Punk's shot at Hangman happened with Hangman present.

Sources familiar with the situation claim that CM Punk has often verbally expressed his displeasure, including recently so blatantly that they thought he might end up quitting the company. Those close to him said that he might have almost decided to stay home instead of coming to the August 17 Dynamite, but don't think he would have quit. We haven't been given any indication that he plans on leaving AEW, but one veteran said they have heard of "threats being levied."

Fightful was also told that the Moxley vs. Punk match for the August 24 episode of AEW Dynamite was a late decision. We haven't been told how late, and when we asked AEW higher ups for context, we didn't gain any. We haven't learned the crux of what led to Punk's current frustrations that would have led to him hypothetically not showing up at Dynamite, whether it be the change in the match, Hangman's jab back in may or otherwise.
If CM Punk started wrestling 20 years earlier, someone would have beaten the **** out of and taught him some humility. The fact that this hasn’t happened is a major reason why wrestling isn’t what it used to be.

apparently hangman said something in an interview recently that he doesn't take advice from the vets in the aew locker room bc he doesn't need it or some chit. that's what the line about the apology being as loud as the disrespect was about.

According to Showbuzz Daily, AEW Dynamite on August 17 drew 957,000 viewers. This number is down from last week’s episode which drew 972,000 viewers.
