    What do you do; Motivation?

What are some of the things you do, or suggest to do when you are tired, and have no motivation or desire to exercise? I find I am struggling with that a lot, and I am sad to say, I give in to it way to much.

Step 1 is to admit that anything that "works" is just a bandaid. Admit that the actual definition of motivation, i.e. - from the root word motive - has been overhyped and conflated to mean the same thing as inspire or coerce. In the end your motives for doing something can be as mundane and rudimentary as wanting to lose weight to look and move better at the beach or backyard bbq. Neither of which are going to spark some overwhelming fire within you to carpe diem the sh*t out of a workout.

Once you understand that most of the time you're going to just have to rely on some simple environment-engineering tricks to make you do what you gotta do then you can use some other things without falling into the trap of using them as a crutch and, furthermore, blaming their absence for not doing your workout that day.

Things that "work" for me when I'm looking to be inspired are documentaries on fitness moguls or athletes. Youtube videos of some of my favorite fitness vloggers. And sometimes just some good tunes on the way home from work get me in the right mindset.

But again, these are just Band-Aids. You have to accept that habit and routine - the willingness to just walk into the gym and put that first hand on the barbell - are what are going to get the work done. In fact, the good news is I've found sometimes that's all it takes. Knock out that first rep or set and all that safety in your comfort zone laziness goes right out the window and you're like, "eh, that wasn't so bad... next set".

Tired or not, I brush my teeth.
Tired or not, I go to work.
Tired or not, I hit the gym.

Make lifting, exercising of some sort, a non-negotiable.

You go to work, pay the bills, and put on your shoes before you leave the house whether you feel like it or not.

    Treat your workouts the same.

You'll almost never regret getting a workout in. You'll probably feel better.

There's a good chance you'll regret not going.

Even if you show up and walk on the treadmill for 15 minutes and do 4 sets of 1 exercise and leave, at least you did something.

Or maybe you don't even leave the house but you bang out 50 push-ups, 50 squats, and 25 sit-ups in 30 25 minutes and that's it. Beats nothing.

Doing less than you had hoped is better than nothing.

If you want the long explanation look up the RP Videos on training motiviation.

    Inspiration -> Motivation -> Intention -> Discipline -> Habit -> Passion

Motivation is good but is a limited resource, what you want are ingrained habits.

Even with all the reasons to work out, you're an adult - if you have no motivation or desire to exercise, don't do it. Most of us aren't dragging ourselves to the gym every week against our own will.

I will echo what Tolerantlactose and MG5 said. Not working out isn't an option for me. If I am feeling off one day, I will just do less. But the point is to still do something. Sometimes once I get moving, I will feel a surprise boost of motivation.

Have you been seeing consistent results? Results are huge motivator. Of course you have to stay consistent to get them. Hand in hand.

Do you have workout goals? Set some goals, make working out seem purposeful.

If you have a day you feel a bit off and are tired, just take some pre-workout before the gym.

"You can be better than this"
    and
    "JFDI"

As others said you don't need to be mentally pumped up and have a great workout. The coach Dan John said that some workouts are great, some are terrible but most are what he called "punch the clock" ones, you go there consistently, get it done and go home, nothing brilliant happens in them.

Those are the ones that add up and make the difference. So don't think it all has to be brilliant or they'll all be great workouts. Even the terrible ones help add up. Just turn up and get it done. JFDI (Just F****** Do It)

Hey I think this is something we all struggle with, especially as we get older there can be more distractions, dig the responses. I do think developing good habits and getting a set schedule makes it easier to be consistent. If you give yourself a way out or start negotiating with I’ll do it later then you will look for the easy way out - do whatever works but you gotta do it

    Actually, very unlike me...
This morning I just DID NOT want to go to the gym, even though it's a deload week (so easy).
It was a close thing, but I forced myself on the basis that even if it was a s**t workout, it's better to go there and do a s**t half workout than do nothing at all and that's OK sometimes.

When I got there I was fine and did what was planned and even enjoyed it

OP, I don't have the magic motivational speech to make you feel super enthusiastic and you don't need it anyway - just get your azz into the gym, even if it is a s**t workout

It's all about commitment to a long term goal. That's something that you need to deal with yourself.

But I do feel where you're coming from. It happens to everyone for sure. I usually talk myself into a motivated state, like literally talking to myself infront of the mirror. And also, I usually tell someone (like a friend or my GF) that I'm going to the gym earlier in the day (or the day before) for accountability and speaking it into existence.

You can also try to get an accountability parter or gym buddy, that usually always helps.

I think most of the posts above answer the original question better than I could.

One thing I would add is that for me, looking in the mirror is sometimes disheartening because I have a sense of, "Is it all really worth it."

But one thing I do find somewhat motivating is to walk around town and see other 30-40 year old men with elastic band arms and little podgy bellies, and then I realise, "Yeah it's worth it."

Intrinsic motivation is cultivated after removing all the external stimulants and going through withdrawal. Hence why I can't attend a public gym. The background music is truly mind rape.

After banging head on office systems it is really difficult to keep motivated when it comes to having a diet that supports your health. But I have seen many at my workplace that have bellies on the table and I don’t want myself to be the same. And this thing motivates me to have an obesity free life and for that I do lite aerobic exercises which helps me to release the toxins and ease my joints for relaxed sleep. And obviously can’t afford to skip a shot of personalised vitamin of ginihealth and then sit for a read - Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman with a few sips of sleep tea.

Have a goal and track your progress towards it. Feedback is a big motivator.

Personally, I'm currently cutting. I wear a fitness tracker to see my expenditure (roughly), track what I eat so I can come in under that and meet my macros, weigh and take bf% weekly or every two weeks etc. All of this data is feedback. It reminds me constantly that I'm meeting my goals, and that motivates me to pick up the weights and take care of that "detail" as well. It just becomes another piece in the chain.

One thing that’s really helped me is just being disciplined. I hope this isn’t true for everyone, but I have more bad days than I have good days and I used to be one of those people who could only workout and eat properly when I had one of those good days. Through discipline I workout and eat properly on those bad days now and it’s really helped with my mental health as well.

I get it that threads can become useful for other posters, but I have major doubts about any poster who has to create a thread for motivation. I think the likelihood of them reading one of the other posts and thinking VOILA, that's what I was missing or that's what I needed to hear are slim to none. Anyone notice that the OP hasn't posted since the day he wrote this thread?

OP was so motivated by our inspiring suggestions that he's been in the gym every day since.

Normally I would have bailed out on a thread like this ages ago,but I remember this guy from other threads, I think he was custodian for a school but the walking was causing some kind of (sciatica???) leg pains. He came across as genuine, and was someone having a difficult time, so if he disappears from the thread for a while I'll give this particular poster the benefit of the doubt
Faith in Jesus first and faith in squats second.
Then other details will start to slot themselves into place.
    Bodyweight 76kg (19/July/2021) started cutting again 10 July :(
