Return to Gym After 13 years - Bad DOMS

Just a background, I started lifting at 14 years old. I lifted regularly until I was about 30 years old. No stranger to the gym or proper technique, or DOMS. After having kids and career, my gym attendance fell off. Now I've returned to the gym at 43 years old after about 13 years off. I am starting light. I'm using weight that I don't even struggle with.. 3 sets of 10 reps, and not burning out. For chest/tricep day, I did bench and fly's, and threw in my tricep pull-downs. For back/bicep day I did lat pull-downs, some rowing and concentration curls. My workouts are lasting only 30 minutes because I'm easing into it. I'm happy to say that my muscle memory has been great. I'm pumping up quick and gaining strength back just as fast.

My problem is that the DOMS I'm getting are pretty severe and lasting 5-7 days. I'm watching the color of my urine and its normal. But the pain is almost debilitating. At first, I could only work out a muscle group once a week. Now I'm feeling like I might add a 2nd workout for the same muscle group in a 7-day span. Could this be normal until my body gets back into the swing of things? I never felt anything like this when I was younger.

    Thanks.

I think this is normal and seems you are doing the right thing easing into it. I’m kind of in the same boat and just starting up again. The strength seems fine but my recovery and endurance is terrible from what I remember. I had DOMS so bad after leg day I could not walk right for 5 days and calves were killing me it was tough to dorsiflex. I even got sore just from doing some push ups… I don’t even think it is age it just shows you how deconditioned we can get over time. I’m also doing maybe 30 minute sessions seems all I can do.

Just stay consistent and keep hydrated. Feeling this out of shape makes me not want to ever stop again.

You don't need 14 years layoff. I stopped in the last lockdown and when I restarted again on an empty bar 5*5 my legs were SORE from that "exercise" WTF?? You will get back into it, just take it easy on the first few weeks and keep going

    Absolutely!!
I love doms still to this day.
Enjoy them while you can get em!

But for real, just make sure you are getting enough protein (.8-1g per body lb/per day)
And I know this is hard to do when you have doms, but some very light work with weights on those muscles that are sore will promote bloodflow and usually cure it overnight.
What I mean is, if your legs are sore the day or two after leg day, take 10-15 mins and train them while they are sore (very light weight, high reps, thinking bloodflow); if bis are sore, do a couple sets of light curls etc...
