6th times a charm? Weight Loss Log

This is going to be my weight loss journal and a reason to keep myself accountable. I'll try to post every couple days.

    So here we go.

    Entry 1.
Every year for the past 5 years I would lose 30 pounds over the course of 5-6 months and then slowly gain it back the next 6 months. While failing, I also have gained a ton of knowledge and feel that I now truly understand how to lose the weight, I just need to stick with it. I thought last year was really going to be the year i succeeded. Then covid hit and little by little my motivation and discipline chipped away and I gained almost all of it back yet again.

A little context, I'm 5' 11.5" and morbidly obese at 378 (down from 389). I lost 100 pounds years ago with just cardio and heavily restricting calories. I gained it all back do to alcoholism and working third shift for years. I quit drinking 5 years ago and am in a much better spot in life and no longer work third shift. My weight has stayed about the same since I quit drinking (other than the fluctuating 30 lbs) and its finally time to get back down to a healthy weight. I am truly motivated and believe I finally have the discipline and desire to lose 100+lb this time. I have my nutrition down and tons of healthy recipes I've learned over the years. I'm trying to stick to 1700 calories daily. I'm almost 39 years old and refuse to be over 300 at age 40. This is happening.

I have been doing curls, military press and squats at home with a barbell but I need more. I want to sign up for a gym today but I'm honestly lost on what to do on my first day. I don't want to waste my time and really want to do this right. I've looked a bit at the workout programs here and will most likely use one of those but any reading material or advice would be hugely appreciated.

You can do All Pros routine with just a barbell (and maybe some slight modifications). But if you are joining a proper gym, pick any of the routines from the Workout Programs sticky threads.

    Entry 2.

376.2. Down another 2 pounds. I've been consistently eating around 1700 calories for a week straight now and the weight seems to be falling off. I know its probably because This was just the first week of real effort and a lot of it water weight, but I'm hoping to maintain nice losses like this for at least a couple months.

I've been motivated before but this time it really does feel different. I need to be very aware of my past failures. I have recognized how my failures have all started. When i get down to 360/350 pounds. I start feeling very good about myself and what i've accomplished. Clothes start fitting better, I am more confident in general. This leads to letting my eating habits slide a bit. Telling myself I deserve that pizza, or, I deserve a week break off working out. In reality 350 pounds is nowhere near the place I should be getting that confident and letting up. 350 pounds is when I need to go harder, be more consistent. 350 pounds is still extremely unhealthy. No rest for the wicked.

I did not go in to the gym yesterday even though I signed up for it. I was still a bit weak from working out at home and I want to go in after a rest day so i can find my 10 rep max weight without my muscles being tired. I'll admit i'm also a bit intimidated. Either way, after work today I will be going.

Here are my weigh ins so far.
    6-1 389
    6-17 383
    6-18 380.6
    6-19 380.4
    6-20 379.4
    6-21 379
    6-22 378.6
    6-23 378

Hey thanks. Thats actually the routine i've picked to do at the gym. I have done most of these exercises at home but No bench or rack yet and i don't really want to lay on my garage floor to do benches press

I've decided to forgo the gym membership and to use that money to buy a power cage and build a gym in my garage. I already have a barbell and iron weights. I'm really enjoying the limited workouts I can do in my garage after work. I feel if I had the equipment it could really become a sress relieving sanctuary I could love.

Thinking about getting the titan t2 or reality fitness 810xlt cages. Going to clean up the garage this weekend and figure out which one to purchase over the next month. Anyone have experience with these two cages?

Still chugging along. Its certainly harder to stay under 2k calories on the weekends for me. I ate around 2300 both saturday and sunday. As long as I dont get too out of control on the weekends I think I can keep up this rate of weight loss.

I found a Titan T-2 short power rack on facebook marketplace about an hour away for $100! The exact rack I was looking to purchase new. I was all set to come pick it up and the seller said they did not want to disassemble it or let me disassemble it and that I needed a truck if I wanted to buy it. I dont have a truck. That was pretty disappointing. I'll keep looking and doing the limited workouts until I can find something used or just purchase the Titan t-2 new.

I'm not really getting DOM's or very sore at all any more. Is this normal? I'm still lifting to failure but I can't tell if im building muscle at this point since I rarely feel soreness anymore.

I struggled over my extended 4th of July weekend with my diet but still stayed under my TDEE. Just not at my low 1700 calorie/day goal. I would call that a success. I'm back at work and back on track.

I commented last week that I didnt feel like i was getting a good workout like I was when I started. So I picked up a 35lb Bulgarian bag from titan fitness. That thing kicked my ass last night. I am proper sore today. I know thats not a good way to judge a good workout, but it is good to feel a bit of soreness again.

I'm still looking for a cheap rack for my garage but this new bag workout will definitely keep me going in the meantime.

I'm going to start posting once a week on Wednesdays from here on out. I'm still losing weight about the same rate. Have found a lot of great recipes that have been helping. All those "anabolic diet" recipes on youtube by Greg Doucette, Remington James, Iron Musket etc. These recipes have been a life saver. I usually eat around 1700 calories and honestly am rarely hungry. Its wild. The protien ice creams that everyone makes are insanely good too. I never thought i'd be able to eat pizza and ice cream a few times a week and still lose lots of weight.

I havent worked out too much this week because I think I over did it this past weekend. I did a lot of squats and other compound movements with the bulgarian bag and now my lower back is really giving me some problems. I also am going canoeing this weekend so I figured I should take it easy this week. So no workouts until next week..

Good progress, it might be worth raising your calories, honestly that's super low, you should be able to drop weight fast at 2500 cals , and if you lift heavy you will probably gain muscle too , your size gives you an advantage many dont have.. you can gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously - but the main thing is your losing weight, and thats the most important thing so whatever suits you best!

We are same height and age, you can smash this once you settle into a routien.

One thing that helped me was cut out any added sugar and avoid sugar heavy foods (some sugar is fine, a sugar donut probably isnt..)- I found this helped keep general food cravings at bay.

Thanks for the pointers. I'll take it into consideration. You certainly seem to know what your doing. I've been reading your logs!

I am concerned about raising my calories too much. What I'm doing right now seems to be working good for now but you're right. I don't want to lose any muscle if possible. I've been concerned about that.

I'm rarely hungry and when I am, I eat. Even so, I think I'm going to start adding in some 2200 calorie days a few times a week next week if that will save me from losing muscle. I am kind of at on losing at least 4lbs a week though.

I don't eat too much sugar really. unless you count the stevia in my huge protien ice crams I eat almost nightly. Honestly my problem was never the sweet stuff, I just would over eat at meals and choose the wrong foods. As well as snack all day. I've cut all that out and don't even miss snacks at this point. Just my after dinner protien ice cream or small snack.

No weight lost this week. Went on a 4 day vacation and splurged a bit. Nothing too bad,I didn't really gain any weight but I certainly didn't lose any. Went hiking and walked a lot during the vacation so I'm sure that helped.

Now that I'm back im struggling a bit with the motivation I had before. It really doesn't take much to start reverting back to your old ways does it? I am eating clean again but my calorie intake has been around 2300/2500kcal for the past few days with zero excersize. Not the 1700 it was pre vacation. My back has been giving me issues since vacation so I'm trying to feel better before I up my activity. I'm adding back walking starting today.

I'm also going to attempt to get my calories down to 2000kcal starting today.

Even the smallest bumps in the road are able to set back progress for weeks at a time. Just gotta get back on.

    Starting weight - 389 lbs

    Current weight - 364.6 lbs

Total weight lost - 24.4 lbs

Weight Lost since last week - 2.6 lbs

The scale finally moved this morning and I couldn't be happier. The previous week I had upped my calorie intake to around 2500/day and everything seemed to stall out. I'm sure I did lose a small amount of weight but as soon as I dropped it back down to 1800 I started to see weight loss again. I will stick to 1800 for now.

I'm still not doing much cardio or lifting weights other than an evening 20 minute walk. I really want to bring some weight lifting back in but I do not want to injure my back again and be out for another 2-3 weeks. At this point I may just stick to light cardio and some light dumbells until I get closer to 300lbs so I dont hurt myself. I think doing compound movements with the bulgarian bag is what did it for me. Which sucks because I loved those workouts. They really kicked my ass.

    Previous weight 364.6

    Current weight 356.8

It's been almost a month since my last post. I will admit, my motivation has waned. This is where i usually stop, but i'm still going! I've officially hit my lowest weight since 2015.

The weight loss has slowed a little but still coming off pretty well. I have not been exercising at all. My back has fully healed but I am hesitant to start again. I feel like I need to be at a lower weight before I start exercising like that. I am going to try to start walking in the evenings again once it cools down. Probably not this week as its the hottest its been all summer here.

    Keeping it going!
