Should I lose weight before bulking?

    Hello,

I have recently decided to get back into fitness. I was into it quite a lot before the whole lockdown situation.

Throughout that period I lost track and gained a fair bit of weight. I'll post them below.

    Age: 24
    Height - 5'8"
    Weight - 184lbs
    BF - I'd estimate around 20-25%

I ideally want to gain muscle mass and as such will have to bulk, but I'm thinking it may be wiser to lose a bit of weight, I was initially looking at getting down to around 155/160lbs and then doing a slow bulk until around the weight I'm at currently.

Like I said, I am getting back into this again so I may be wrong in thinking that losing weight is the best option, what would you guys suggest is the best course of action for me. Lose weight and then bulk and add muscle mass or start where I am at now and bulk up to 200 lbs+ but then have to cut all that weight at a later date.

    Cheers.

If you are really 20-25% BF and previously in better shape you should be able to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. Small calorie deficit, hit your macros every day, proper sleep and no alcohol are factors which will help. Also anecdotally try to not let muscle glycogen drop too much.

The alternative is to cut first and then bulk as you say. I would favor this if your body fat % is higher than your estimate, and in most cases people do underestimate their body fat % but it is hard to guess without pictures.

The only thing you should definitely avoid is to bulk first when you are already 20-25% BF.

In your opinion, it would be a better idea to cut first and then bulk. In most cases people underestimate their body fat %, which is hard to guess without pictures, so I'd suggest this if your body fat % is higher than what you estimate.

Best to post pics for best advice, but if you're a natty at 5'8" and 184 then your BF may be a lot higher than you think in which case bulking would not be the best course of action.
All it takes is consistency, effort, proper nutrition, good programming, and TIME.

With your stats you need to lose fat before attempting to add mass.
