Better off paying scalper prices for a GTX 3070 or buying a new laptop?

I have a GTX 1080 that died on me, and have been searching for a 3070/3080 for weeks. No luck. So then I started looking into gaming laptops.

The Alienware M17 R4 with 16GB GTX 3080 can play everything on ultra settings with a 3440x1440 monitor for $2550.

Or, I could get an RTX 3070 for $1200-1300 and stick with my desktop.

Any suggestions? I've always been skeptical of laptops because after the 1 year warranty you're out of luck if they go bad. At this point, paying $1300 for an RTX 3070 and having peace of mind seems like the best option..

    I game on 3440x1440 so I don't need more than a 3070.

No, I would be connecting the laptop to an external 34" 3440x1440 monitor.

Been doing some research though and I'm starting to think maybe a prebuilt wouldn't be a bad idea, but then it's kind of useless having a second PC. So then I was curious, maybe I should just pay scalper prices for the video card and upgrade my existing PC?

Existing CPU is a 6600k. If I upgrade to a Ryzen 5800X, that will cost me $450 from Amazon
Upgrading to an MSI X570 motherboard will cost me $260 from Amazon
Upgrading to Corsair Vengeance 32GB RAM will cost me $187 from Amazon

Total would be $1300 + $450 + $260 + $187 = $2207.. which is quite steep TBH. From what I've heard since I game at a high resolution, the upgrade to my processor wouldn't even be worth it.

I could get an Alienware with the following specs for $2460, which means the video card is around $1160 anyways, with a 3 week delivery time
    Ryzen 5800x ($450 separately)
    GTX 3070
    32GB Memory ($200 separately)
    Motherboard ($250 separately
    1TB SSD ($200 separately)
    Case + 550W PSU ($200 separately)

With Ibuypower I could get the following for $2083, which means the video card is around $823, but it's a 6 week delivery time
    Ryzen 5600x ($410 separately)
    GTX 3070
    32GB Memory ($200 separately)
    Motherboard ($250 separately)
    1TB SSD ($200 separately)
    Case + 650W PSU ($200 separately)

Seems like the quickest, easiest, and least expensive option is to just bite the pillow and buy a 3070 for $1300.. another reason I'm considering this option is that since I get the evga model, I get a 3 year warranty. With a prebuilt I don't get that even if the card is an evga, right?

Because it's cheaper than paying scalper prices for a gpu. You can always sell off the old desktop parts.

You can get a prebuilt with an rtx 3070 for around $1800. Why the F would you get a gpu for $1300 lmao. You can easily get 500 bucks for your old rig if you wanted to. So that means you get it cheaper AND you have a faster rig. Not exactly rocket science brah.

Why would anyone want my old rig?

    It's a Intel 6600k, 16gb of ram, and 512gb ssd

Where do you see a prebuilt with RTX 3070 for $1800? Would the 3070 even have a warranty beyond the first year in a prebuilt?

Came in to thread to basically repeat what everyone else is going to tell you, OP. Whatever amount you might pay an ebay scalper, you can spend on a pre-built pc with the SAME graphics card. Plus newer hardware or at least stuff you can sell afterwards

What about the warranty on the video card though?

My GTX 1080 died 2 years after I bought it from evga, and they replaced it since they had a 3 year warranty. 2 years later it died again, this time out of warranty. If I buy a prebuilt, I'm only getting one year of warranty right?

quite a lot, the cooling is very minimal most times, the longevity is way less then a desktop, even just normal gaming the laptop can overheat and it'll throttle down your performance big time

    Here and here for example.
I don't know how warranty works in the States, but here you can get extra warranty for a slight added cost, so there's that.

Even aside from what Vikes said.. Can you get a laptop with similar performance to a desktop for the same price?

Meh. TBH I’ve decided to upgrade to a Ryzen 5800x and new mobo. That will cost me around $700. If I paid $1300 for the GPU I’d be at $2k, and I’d get a guaranteed warranty on the gpu.

I could buy a prebuilt but it would be hard to resell a case, chitty psu, chitty ssd, chitty mobo, and chitty cpu. I sure wont be getting any nice components in a prebuilt for $2k that I can resell.

My only hope for an MSRP gpu is microcenter but even they have jacked up the prices to around $750 for a 3070.

$700 for the cpu and mobo? What about the case, psu, memory, hdd, cooling? Seems like a prebuilt would just be the better option atm.

I already have all of those components in my existing desktop, and they’re all good, no need to upgrade them

Not sure why u come to misc to ask for advice and not take anyone advice. I am with everyone else buying a laptop for gaming is a terrible idea unless you actually needing the portability of the laptop ie you will be taking it on business trips on a weekly basis. Ive tried 2-3 gaming laptops and they just dont compare to desktops when it comes to performance and all the ones i tried had heating issues and were too loud.

Rewarding sculpers for botting and taking graphics cards away from you is even worse imo.

get a gaming laptop with a comparable gpu to your 1080 or a little better and just skip the 30xx generation because it sucks **** and isn't worth the headache of jumping through hoops anyway.

I do take the advice. Im not going the laptop route.

At this point its a matter of scalpers vs prebuilt.

Realistically if I buy a prebuilt it wont have the cpu/mobo I want and i’d have to deal with the hassle of selling chitty parts.

You know even places like Microcenter have raised their prices? Gtx 3070 is $800 there. Even retailers are jacking up prices so its no longer just average joes that are scalping

Buy the prebuilt and scalp the parts to get what you want.

It's ****ed either way. You are pretty much left out of the all around most practical approach, and might as well buy an Apple it makes no difference at this point if it serves your gaming needs.

Are you sure about this, or are you guessing? I got a nice prebuilt with a good Asus mobo, gigabyte gpu, high end ram, etc. They're out there. And I mean, the Alienware I linked you can't be that bad? The era where prebuilts were chit is far behind us. You're goofing hard if you're gonna give in to scalpers.

    like I said before

    go to reddit /r/buildapcsales

wait for someone to post a great deal on a pre-built rtx 3070

buy it. the pre-builders will say estimated ship date is like 1-2 months, but they ship a lot sooner. Brother did it this way and ordered cause he was tired of waiting for drops and just sold his current computer for $900.. paid $1500 for a rtx 3070 pre-built computer so he basically paid $600 for a new computer with updated gpu.

What I'm concerned about with prebuilts is if the graphics card dies after two years. Alienware or whatever company I buy from only guarantees their parts for one year. My GTX 1080 died two years after I bought it (within the 3 year warranty) then it died again a month ago 2 years later out of warranty.

I supposed I could configure an alienware with the ryzen.. but is it really that easy to sell parts to people online? Like a harddrive, ram, cooler, power supply, etc?

    What about this?

    https://www.dell.com/en-us/member/sh...c-ae3742bc121c

I would want to sell the 8GB ram, 1TB 7200RPM harddrive, case, and 550W power supply. Really though, that would barely get me anything right? If I'm paying $1656, and I estimate the video card to be $900, the processor to be $400, the motherboard to be $150, and the spare parts to be $200.. I guess I'm getting a deal? But realistically I wouldn't be able to sell those spare parts.

If I can't sell the spare parts I'm pretty much paying $1100 for the video card with a one month wait time.

But why would you want to sell them? Aren't those parts better than what you have right now? What's the warranty on a gpu if you buy it seperate? Is it longer than if you buy it in a prebuilt? I thought it was the same.

not sure if your current build, but i would suppose the newer build would be "faster" than your current one if its the tech around the gtx 1080. I would just sell your old build as-is without gpu

also i've never had a gpu "die" on me, i game almost daily. Perhaps it just bad luck, i wouldn't worry so much about warranty honestly, these companies will do anything and everything to not provide the insurance they claim to give you.

the rtx 3070 gpu my brother got on ibuypower was a gigabyte "GV-N3070GAMING OC-8GD" which is retailing for $750 on bestbuy.

The parts I listed arent better. The only thing I need for my pc right now are the graphics card, cpu, and mobo. Evga warranty is 3 years for example, but theres no way a prebuilt warranty lasts that long

So you don't still have warranty on the individual parts when buying a prebuilt? That's odd.
Ah, the 6600k's chipset also uses DDR4 ram. Still, the ram you would get in the prebuilt is clocked higher than DDR4 ram in 2015? So it has to be better. The hdd and psu don't matter much I guess, but newer so they'll last you longer. Or you could change the hdd to an ssd and go with that.

Yea I have 16GB DDR4 3200 I believe. Dont think i want to spend money upgrading it. Already have a nice SSD and modular power supply.

Its not a bad deal, but I’d be paying $1100 net for the gpu if I went the alienware route, and that would also come with only the standard one year warranty (I’m guessing) and a one month wait time.

Scalper route would be $1300 + $400 (cpu) + $200 (mobo).. so $1900.. hmm on second thought thats a fair bit of savings. $250 savings
