Ford F series horrible reliability explains a MIND BOGGLING Phenomenon

Most people know that the Ford F Series are by far the best selling vehicle in the US year after year, decade after decade by a huge margin. The Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram are the 2nd and 3rd best selling vehicles year after year, decade after decade.
A reasonable person would expect that there would be more of these vehicles on the road than any other vehicle in the United States. That's where you're wrong. The reliability of these 3 pickup trucks are SOOOOO BAD compared to the the actual top most common 5 vehicles on the road that there are more of those vehicles on the road than any of these three pickup trucks.
This article is a few years old but it was a REAL EYE OPENER as far as reliability and longevity of one vehicle vs another.

Here's a list of the 10 most common vehicles on the road as of 2018.

    Rank In California Nationwide
    1 Toyota Camry Toyota Camry
    2 Honda Civic Nissan Altima
    3 Toyota Prius Honda Accord
    4 Toyota Corolla Toyota Corolla
    5 Honda Accord Honda Civic
    6 Nissan Altima Hyundai Sonata
    7 Nissan Sentra Chevrolet Silverado
    8 Hyundai Sonata Ford F150
    9 Hyundai Elantra Ford Fusion
    10 Nissan Versa Chevrolet Malibu

Let's say for example that there were 15 million Ford F Series Pickup Trucks sold in the last 30 years and there were 6 million Hyundai Sonatas sold in the last 30 years in the US. Which vehicle would you expect more of there to be on the road today in the US?

I'd expect more of the F150 obviously. But your own source puts the F150 at the 8th most reliable vehicle nationwide so I'm confused by your post.

Firstly I would like to know how 'on the road' is defined. Is it referring to someone with a camera counting every vehicle type that drives on the highway in a given period of time? Is it referring to how many cars are registered with the state yearly?

    Edit:
Source: EverQuote. Based on vehicles reported by users requesting quotes between Jan. 1, 2016, and April 1, 2018. Based on model years 2007 and newer.

I wonder if customer demographics play a role in the results. I will check some more sources.

A lot of people who buy trucks now are moms or people who daily drive in bumper to bumper traffic with long commutes. The same type to never do maintenance and also treat their vehicles like chit.

Not all but it seems like more and more people treat vehicles like phones these days. Why maintain them if you're going to trade it in in 3 years? Let the next sucker deal with it.

Truck buyers often drive twice as many miles per year as a Camry buyers. We get Camry trades that are 12 years old with 100k miles. We get 12 year old F150s and Silverados with 250k miles. That and trucks do way more work than Camrys.

    Youre such a dork

No one is saying Camrys and Accords arent reliable. Its apples to oranges though. Trucks are used way harder than mid size sedans. The fact that there are fewer trucks than sedans still on the road says nothing about reliability. Now if you were comparing Accords and Altimas which have similar uses and similar sales numbers youd have a point. But youre retarded so you fail to see it.

After further research OP appears correct. F series trucks outsell Camrys and Corollas by a large margin and there are not nearly as many on the roads given time. The only other explanation I can think of is that fleet trucks are not included in studies.

10 year old camry still on the road with 125k miles and light use as a commuter car. Needs a starter and owner says no biggie lets fix it because I only used it for my 15 mile round trip to work.

10 year old Silverado no longer on road after 250k miles of towing, hauling, hunting, off roading, etc. Needs catalytic convertor and has a slight exhaust leak so owner decides that with the miles its a better idea to trade and get a new one. Truck goes to auction and gets bought for parts or maybe spends another 50k miles on the road before being junked or parted.

    I for one am shocked.

People who buy Camrys are not car people, they don't even do routine maintenance like oil changes, topping off oil if an old car burns oil, etc. They never do coolant flushes, never change transmission fluid or filters, change spark plugs, etc.
People who buy pick up trucks do routine maintaince themselves, don't even need jack stands to do an oil change, etc.

You misspelled Nissan. Toyota and Honda buyers are some of the best when it comes to regular maintenance. I read a dozen carfaxes a day.

The list is nationwide. The sample is taken in The People's Republic of Cuckafornia.

My 2002 Silverado has 357K on it and the valve covers haven't been off, original trans and rear end, mostly original. Have a 2018 as well.
