    Msi gs66 gtx2060 144hz

Just ordered this today for $1099 before taxes.

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-gs6...?skuId=6408551

Any thoughts? Good/bad purchase? Should I have waited for the new Ryzen laptops supposedly coming out?

its not bad, but laptops in general for gaming kind of suck, they throttle the chips because of heat so you end up with subpar performance from a desktop with the same chip.

if a laptop was your only option its not a bad purchase imo, will certainly play whatever you ask of it.

but im kind of in the camp of if you're gonna game on pc.. mobile chips are kind of a toss up due to not knowing how the cooling is gonna work out and all that, and you're basically tethered to the power cord anyways so it might as well be a desktop.

Yeah I hear that, I need a laptop for work and I have a periodic down time so I figured I'd get a gaming version.

sounds like it fits your needs then, it will definitely play anything by today's standards at an acceptable level.

Yeah it's replacing an Acer Nitro 5 that has a 1050ti and a 60hz screen with a like a 22ms response time so I'm hoping to see a solid performance upgrade.

I could get an MSI with the exact same specs but with a 60hz monitor instead of the 144hz monitor for $250 less. Not sure if the 144hz is worth that extra cash.

Good price but 144hz is useless with a 2060.

Even at 1080p? If so maybe I should just get the lesser model with the 60hz screen then.

Agreed. A 2060 isn't all that great at higher resolutions but at 1080p it will do work.

I have an MSI laptop with a FULL POWER 2070 Super, if Im saying a 2060 will be useless is because it. The mobile 2070 gets 70-120fps on most aaa games on medium/high so you can’t expect the 2060 to do the same.

What you posted has a MAX Q variant even though bestbuy does not mention it, msi does not put their full power gpus on the slimmer laptops. A 2060 MAX Q is basically a 1060. Even if they did that laptop is too slim to cool down and will overheat.

Just get the cheaper 60hz version. To get anywhere near even 90 fps you will have to lower down settings to a point which will make 1080p look like chit.

If you’re planning on playing games from 2018 and before than that’s another story

Appreciate the perspective of an MSI owner with a superior card. On the MSI website the majority of the GSS models come with Max-Q as you said, however this version does seem to come with the standard RTX 2060 non-MaxQ version.
    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/GS66-Steal.../Specification
There is some reports of the cpu/gpu getting fairly hot but apparently this can be more-or-less fixed with either re-applying new thermal paste to the cpu/gpu or undervolting it.

The other laptop I was considering, the one with the same internals but with a 60hz screen unfortunately also has a pretty tacky, juvenile aesthetic and color scheme. All red and black and "gamer-y" just like the Acer Nitro 5 I currently use. I figure I'll just drop an extra $250 just so it won't be such an eye-sore lol.

The laptop you did post looks cool af in person so that kinda makes it worth the extra money.

Best buy delivered the laptop in like 17 hours which was pretty impressive.
So it is the standard full power RTX 2060. The only game I tried it out on was WoW lol, but it did quite well hitting 144fps with maxed settings - the screen and fluidity at 144hz is actually impressive. I really do like the smoothness.
I'm sure a more graphics intensive games plus throttle at high cpu temperatures probably has fps hiccups but at least in comparison to my previous Acer Nitro 5 this machine is pretty beastly.

The cpu hit 90 degrees when playing WoW so I figure I'm going to have to do a thermal re-paste which is a bit intimidating since I've never done it before.

it's NBD, just clean it off with some iso alch and use about half a pea/rice sized dot/line in the center, i got sweaty my first time but people on the internet scare the **** out of you for no reason, as long as its not squishing out the sides you did it well enough
