I'm hearing bestbuy probably won't be getting much invenotry until June, if so and this continue the card will be almost a year old before most consumers can get their hands on it. Does Nvidia plan on developing anything else in the meantime?

Will the 3080 become obsolete by the time inventory becomes widespread?

The 3080 won't be "obsolete " for years and years. Literally a 1080Ti is still very much a powerful and relevant card by most people's standards.
The only people who think a 3080 will be "obsolete" is the very small percentage of gamers that think unless they have the latest and greats, their system is garbage. Meanwhile 90% of gamers stay 2 - 3 generations behind in GPU's and are still getting a good playing experience and happy with their setups. The high end enthusiasts on this forum re absolutely NOT representative of what the HUGE majority of the rest of the PC community is.
Go look at steam stats for systems. Huge majority of people are still rocking GPU's and CPU's that are 2-3 generations old. It's been that way for years and years, not just because of the current shortage. Just like the vast majority of people are still playing at 1080P.Last edited by R3L3NTL3SS; 02-24-2021 at 06:23 AM.

tech has caught up in 1080p everything... so many fps's that were doing 360hz monitors now, its unreal.
so next step will be 4k (just lol @ you 2k bruhs)
and it'll prob be around 2025... and I can hear the advertising in my head now "4k... 4000 series" "4090ti reaching framerates over 240fps at 4k!!"I rep back

I guess if you're high enough on crack you can convince yourself that 240FPS at 4K will happen next gen.
RTX 3090 isn't even remotely close to 120FPS at 4K on demanding modern games. 100% more performance isn't coming next gen lmao.
Maybe some E Sports titles will run at those frame rates, but that'll be about it.

Still rocking an Asus Rog Strix 1080ti, because can't find a MSRP 3090 Rog Strix but even gaming in UW 1440p it doesn't have issues running ultra right now above or at 60fps so any upgrade is merely to soothe my enthusiast side, especially because lately i play **** like Valheim or indie 2d games.
I did want an RTX card for the Cyberpunk playthrough and the hopes that down the line i'm future proofed for upgrading my monitors to higher hz getting a newer gen VR HMD but none of it is necessary.
so now I have a fully refreshed CPU/mobo with a 10900k OC'ed to 5.1 AIO cooled and 64gb of RAM with a 1080ti.. it just feels half finished more than anything

My 970 can still run valhalla at 60 fps.
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

Exactly the same boat. I built a new one around a 3900x last summer anticipating have a new gpu by now. I've had my 1080ti since launch day and I'm just ready for the 3 series. At this rate I'm considering ordering a pre built with a 3090 from cyberpowerpc and then just giving my gf this computer. I can always just clean up the build they send as long as I pick the parts who really cares. I might be able to actually get one thru a retailer faster that way. I check stock every day and follow some discord and stuff but I just haven't caught anything after months.
It pisses me off mostly because I've had so much time off work from covid leave to being injured and being out a few months. And I'm just sitting here not enjoying my games to their full potential with all this extra time to play.Yes... come and let us make an end of it. It matters not, even cornered, to my last breath... I remain who and what I am. I will not hide, nor tremble, nor beg. Let them come and reckon with fury that is DOOM defiant.

the thought has crossed my mind as well, like I have a couple friends who want to build rigs and didn't want to buy a scalped GPU so they're waiting, but retailers who build pc's seem to have stock more often and/or at least allow you to put in an order to get filled when your next in line.
P art of me wanted to just say "Yo, lets go in on this together, I remove the 3090 from it and give you my 1080ti since you're gaming on a 1080p monitor and want to play CS:GO and OW with it, we can both win here."

My 1080 is still going strong at 1440p. I might have to adjust down a few newer games but sometimes that seems to be more of an optimization issue than a 1080 issue. I'm still not convinced about 4k gaming, I might wait until 50X0 to go 4k since I'm sure it will finally do 4k at reasonable speeds even for budget cards. At this rate I just want a 3060ti to not have to tune down some current games, but I also find myself mostly playing older or retro-style games these days anyways.

I feel like this is trend with pc gaming, we get shafted on console ports with some half ass job and indie titles tend to give a fresh hit of dopamine that can't be matched with a AAA re-release like CoD or Madden.
I tend to live in the indie 20 dollar steam section more than the major AAA releases these days because they offer something different.

nah unlike stupid yearly released cell phones the gpu market holds steady for 2 years before the new generation is released... and even then when you purchase a high end gpu, they can last you two generations if you really wanted to hold onto it, 3 generations especially for competitive fps games like valorant, cs:go.
example like how someone mentioned the 1080ti.. still a very strong card. Warzone 1080p 150fps average in fights.. 1440p 125fps in fights and 4k 60fps in fights..
what more could you want?Last edited by rocketfish; 02-24-2021 at 01:48 PM.

I am glad the inventory is low. I was super hyped for the card and was ready to spend my money but the fact that it was OOS gave me enough time to realize i really dont need the card my gtx1080 runs everything at 2k perfectly fine.
I played and beat cyberpunk 2077 on 2k resolution with very minimal issues.Atlanta Falcons!!!

this. had this exact sentiment and had to dik slap myself into reality that my 1080ti was still going strong and could adequately support 1440p 144hz. after i took nvidia's cock out of my mouth i realized that 90-110 fps in some games on high-ultra setting was still amazing. dont get me wrong, i still want a 3080 for a decent price and eventually want to move into 4k high FPS gaming but the supply issues regarding 3xxx series has made me a lot more patient and happy with what i got

It's near impossible to turn around a new-fukking-anything chip in under 2 years. There's a sequential flow that every chip has to go through and the steps just can't move any faster than that.
The 30s will be the latest and greatest card until 2022 or 2023, and will be very competitive even after that.FA Crew
