    Catch can opinions?

Anyone running a catch can they installed, or have an opinion on them?

I have a Silverado with the 5.3 Vortec. Seen a few guys that run cans on them and they will pull out a chocolate milk looking liquid after so many thousand miles. These are the engines with AFM (active fuel management) and can have issues with their lifters, and just the whole top end of the engine getting excessively dirty by oil. Sounds like adding a can wouldn't hurt anything for this engine imo. This issue has even gone to court a few times, but no recall has ever been issued... but it is documented by GM and there are service bulletins concerning these engines. 07-13.

    Opinions?

I'd say get one, relatively cheap add to extend the life of your engine. Install and then do a full SeaFoam Treatment and oil change.

    Agreed
A simple one will do, blows my mind when I see ones that cost hundreds of dollars.

If your engine is known to get a bit of blowby then it won't hurt.

Turbo engines seem to suffer more from it.

One thing: Catch cans can crack in really cold temps, so unlike some post above don't cheap out too much

Have a 2018 Silverado with 50K, doesn't consume any oil and haven't detected any real blowby. No real issues so far.

The issue is that with a DIG engine (direct injection gas) you don't have fuel spraying on the back of the valves and intake ports and carbon caused by the combustion process builds up on the back of the valves. Oil coming through the PCV system will coat the back of the valves also and then cook off and cause even more buildup. Once it gets built up the only real way to clean it is to remove the intake and manually clean it. Walnut blasting is probably the best way.

The AFM system the deactivates 4 of the cylinders has the issue of those cylinders not being lubricated by any fuel what so ever and wearing on the rings. Blowby is going to happen with any engine, especially modern one's. Rings getting worn makes it worse. As well, the AFM tends to fail from the lifter pins and the heads have to come off to replace them. It will go into 4cy mode and then won't be able to come out of it on some cylinders.

I bought mine new, changed the oil for the first time at 1400mi and used M1, and have used M1 synthetic and also added BG MOA most of the time. I change the oil when it gets to about 20%. Doing some research and have switched to Amsoil. I run 93 gas in it. Trying to figure out if I want to have it tuned soon so I can run E85 and tune it for premium and might turn off the AFM. It's debatable if it really has much effect on MPG but I'm averaging 21-22MPG on ti.

Yeah, I purchased the truck with 30,000 miles on it and I disabled AFM soon after. Has 81,000 on it now. It does indeed use oil, which seems to be a thing with some of em. Probably about a quart every 3000 miles. My old VW R32 used a quart ever thousand and was a hoot. Lifters make a ticking sound on start up but not all the time.
