A Life Change and a Changed Life

I’m going through a painful life change, and it’s shaking me awake as to how much I have stopped caring about myself. Over my life, I’ve been an Olympic contender, run a marathon and several half marathons. I believe at one point was within two years of competing in bodybuilding after spending five years consistently at the gym.

Now, things couldn’t be more different. Older, inactive, working a lot, and numbing myself through the pandemic with endless time online and emotional eating. I actually did squats the other day and my arms got sore from managing the (unloaded) Olympic bar. Holy crap I am mushy.

I took photos today, as painful as it was, because nothing helps me see progress better. Journaling has always helped keep me on track so here it goes.

    GOALS
Commit to fitness. 10,000 steps a day when possible. Weight training in four day split.
Commit to nutrition. Meal planning, even when not perfect but at least better.
Commit to spirit. Not in a great place emotionally, so try to find joy. Read. Be present. Meditate. Take workshops or courses of interest. Work on projects that make me happy.

The first few days have been challenging, it’s not easy to alter the tide of my life - the culmination of a busy, work oriented schedule, exhaustion and easy but bad choices. I’ve started with more activity and better food that, while not perfect, has cut out sugar. That is a hard one for me, so it’s going to be a daily battle for a while.
