Exercise at Midlife Linked to Better Brain Health in Late Life

    https://neurological.org.nz/news/mid...-brain-health/

    https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/944081

This was a 25 year study which is very helpful.

"The study, published in the January 6, 2021, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, found that more physical activity during these phases of life is associated with less brain damage 25 years later."
sums it up a thread will start off promising and then turn into name calling..

I remember reading on the CBC that strength training can actually repair some cognitive impairments. Amazing!

It might have been in the same article (I can't find either now) where a doctor said that if the benefits derived from exercise could be put into tablet form, that patients would demand it, doctors would prescribe it, hospitals and pharmacies would stock it, and governments would pay for it. And still, it's a topic of conversation that becomes so contentious so quickly - patients get very defensive and I think doctors are getting tired of bringing up the subject.

It makes sense that exercise would cause these improvements because it reduces many of the health problems that contribute to declining brain health, but studies like these are difficult to interpret because we don't know the extent to which healthier people (with healthier brains) are just more likely to exercise.

I know there are other studies though that find exercise promotes neurogenesis in the hippocampus (area of the brain responsible for consolidating new memories) via increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Interestingly, one of the early discoveries involving hippocampal neurogenesis was in the context of clinical depression. Those with clinical depression often have hippocampal atrophy -- and SSRI drugs (for depression treatment) help reverse that by increasing neurogenesis in the hippocampus. So, at least on some level, exercise mimics the effects of antidepressants in the brain which may explain its effectiveness at helping to alleviate mild to moderate depression.

    Cliffs: Exercise = good.

The one I heard was that if exercise could be put in a bottle, it would be the most prescribed medication in the history of medicine.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.

I live in OR - it's frustrating around here. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/ore...9-c24eaf3c3969
This week the governor said they can have 6 people.... wow thanks.
I train at a home gym right now so I'm good, but thousands of Oregonians are out of luck.
I have a meet at the end of the month that for now is still on (not sure of details, might be lifting outside in potentially 30s weather).
    Ugh.
I'm certainly an advocate of safety around here, but I'm not sure these restrictions are doing much good - and they are for sure causing considerable harm.

Been following a gym owner in PA, during the second shutdown he didn’t comply, he said he wasn’t falling for it twice. IMO that man is true hero and is the one saving lives by not complying.

Well the focus of exercise**in most media** is about a few things: weight/bmi, appearance, health(diabetes or cholesterol heart).
I never, ever, ever, hear them discuss brain health, brain supps, or things related to an aging brain so for ME the articles were refreshing.

I didn't mean to poo-poo the article. I just meant that guys who have actually tried exercise and eating right could have told them that and saved them the hastle. Its like the study that proved that men who help the wife with chores get laid more. Some things just seem obvious.

Common sense isn't so common anymore and you know this with interactions with folks on a daily basis.
Sometimes you have to spell it out for folks.

Take for example, i never thought we would all be arguing over safety measures regarding pandemic safety.
    go figure.
sums it up a thread will start off promising and then turn into name calling..
The easiest way to tell when an argument has no merit is when the protagonist mixes in some personal insults.

Haven't there been a lot of studies that show that exercise prevents dementia and Alzheimer's like 30 to 45%?
I feel like I hear about this all the time but of course it's nice to get reinforcement.

This guy always cracks me up!

No one is forcing people to exercise, it’s a choice and it’s been known to improve quality of life, but that don’t mean everyone is gonna do it. There is truth to the statement “you get old once you stop lifting” this does not mean you live longer but you will most likely have better quality of life while alive.

There are still risks in strength training as you age but quality of life may be worth those risks, it’s still a choice and there still should be choice in the pandemic bs, you still risk going to the gym to acquire strong immunity which also lessens the chance of dying from the pandemic which imo is worth the risk as opposed to safety first and doing nothing.

funny, however I suspect that both of those edits were in fact written together!

We'll consider this a anomaly and refrain from subsequent misuse of the edit banter protocols; agreed?
