    Your thoughts on this..(Mask related)

Today I had an appraiser come to my house to see what my house is worth, when he got here he was wearing a mask, no biggie. He then asked me politely if I could put on my mask, where in turn I told him, "apologies but I am not going to wear a mask in my own home" He stood there for a a couple of seconds, (thinking, I am assuming, of his next move, whether to come in or not) and then he entered my home.

Do you guys think I was wrong?

Please keep in mind my head has been all fcked up since the break-in to my property, which by the way I now have the top of the line surveillance camera, night vision, voice recording, human detection/activation - camera will sound if you enter the area where I set up as "Person lingering within 2 seconds" and it will beep my phone advising me there is a person on said area. I put the old one in my back yard so now I have full 24 hour surveillance around the whole perimeter of my home. If anyone enters my property they will surely meet their maker, but I digress, what do you think about the mask situation?

Sounds like you initially threw him off with your perfectly acceptable, yet currently non conventional answer, but then the cognitive part of his brain kicked in, and he realized it was perfectly fine to go in, so he entered your house.

    Next question.

Not wrong at all. Masks do absolutely nothing against a virus.
    Your house, your rules.

Live in Cali & NEVER wear a mask. Just be friendly & smile at people, have had only one old lady ask me to pull my shirt up over my mouth. Told her, no thank you, & left.

I'm a noob to this territory of the BB.com forum, but I'll add my view. I'm American, grew up in a Texas city, but I've lived in Thailand for 5 years if that adds any perspective.

I don't think you were wrong to refuse to wear the mask in your home, but looking at the bigger picture of the pandemic in USA, I think the appraiser was right to ask you to wear it. When he comes to deliver a service which (I guess) you requested, suddenly you enter a shared social space, and norms of behavior shift a bit. The appraiser was a professional coming to do a job, he wasn't exactly a friend or family member coming for a personal visit. So, I think you should have worn it.

In Thailand, we've almost completely forgotten about Covid. Social gatherings and everything have been normal since July, and very few cases have popped up. People still wear masks, wash their hands outside of shops, use hand gel, check temperature, etc., all without complaining and all without new outbreaks of the virus. A stubbornness about masks just doesn't exist in this culture, and there are very few problems here about masks or about the virus.

Hope this doesn't seem opinionated, just adding it since you asked for opinions.

I would have asked "you want me to do what?" and when / if he repeated the request I would have closed the door on him.
Nobody will ever tell me what the fuk I should do in my own home, I think it was actually quite ballsy of the guy to even make the request.

Early on in this mess I bought a microwave off a guy, he said "don't worry, we're all healthy here." Funny thing is we didn't shake hands and kept our distance. With every interaction like you describe, it's the same. No masks, but we keep our distance. It's a little odd to pretend you're in a bubble, I look forward to shaking hands on a deal once VP Pence's inoculation goes through.

John, it is hard to judge, personally I would put the mask on simply to avoid possible escalation. Even if I am in my house and don't believe the covid is real. I would do that from sheer respect to someone else's decision to wear a mask. Usually, I try not to think that I am the smart ass and everybody else is bunch of dummies. I mean, they are, but I am inhibiting those thoughts. You know, we have those inhibitory control blocks in our brain. You were escalating, and government official dude quickly de-escalated. They are trained to do that by the way. That moment, the slight pause is when he switched on whatever he learnt at his training. Now, John think about it. He is visiting number of houses and meeting different people. For him, you were "one of those" he is always getting at least once a day. No biggie, he probably doesn't even remember you or the little scene you were trying to make. But you, on the other hand, are still thinking about it, posting here asking questions. Take it easy eh.

    The honest answer, OP?

Yes, irl you were being difficult. I mean at the end of the day he asked you to put a small piece of cloth on your face for his protection.

Granted, this is a polarizing issue, and I frankly don’t think it’s that big of a deal, as the appraiser thought the same. If he escalated, then one of you would have had to diffuse the situation. There was no need, and thus you didn’t really cause any hassle.

There will always be people on both sides criticizing the other for either wearing or not wearing masks, so a comment behind your back is the worst that you can expect, which is really nothing at the end of the day. Just will probably polarize people even more the more it’s talked about.

As for your home, gldm. Just saw a show (This is Us) where one of the characters goes through the same thing, and is truly shaken. Really portrays well the feelings that I have never had to endure. Mirin the security set up, and gl

I don't have state of the art security, but I do have 2 cameras at the front that activate for motion and have infra red LEDs for night time. I've played about with trigger sensitivity, activity zones and carefully tuned them to be as low sensitivity as possible and still capture people.

Despite that, I still get quite a few fox recordings.

Just saying cameras can be good, but.. don't be sitting there on permanent high-alert armed and ready for the camera notification. They should help security and relax you, not just be an extra thing to elevate your blood pressure

You weren't wrong, but if I were in that situation, I probably would have just put on a mask...especially if the guy was polite about it. Unfortunately, his job requires him to enter people's houses, so he is probably in risky situations pretty regularly and doesn't have much control other than to request the homeowner to put on a mask. We don't know his situation...Maybe he lives with somebody who has COPD, is elderly, immunocompromised etc. and doesn't want to risk getting them sick. It is totally OK to refuse to wear a mask in your own home, but I probably would have done it just to give the guy some peace of mind.

You weren't wrong, no one can fault you for your house your rules.

However, the incident wouldn't have happened to me. I would have put my mask on when he knocked and he damn well better be wearing his. Masks don't prevent the virus totally but it does help mitigate it. With that said. NYC is a hotspot for the virus, his job is to enter peoples houses all day long. I would have had no idea where he has been or who he has come in contact with. Masks make sense even if it only mitigates it down to 1% or less imo.

Agree. We're on the other end of things, looking at houses. We wear masks, as required by the real estate companies, which we are informed of ahead of time. The appraiser is likely operating under recommended or required policy and is just doing his job in his place of business (your house). Just accommodate the guy, it's not hard.

Thanks all some very valid points, looking back I think I should have just put on the mask, putting someone at ease should have been my priority especially if the guy was scared/concern on his health or potentially passing it on.

Just because I don't fear this stupid thing, doesn't mean others don't. I think this falls in line with protecting a coward who is afraid to fight, or stepping up to the plate when someone is being attacked while others just sit back and watch. I guess in a sense being sensitive/understanding to the weak.

I dont think you were being fair, you put him in a bad situation. I am sure you were aware that he was coming, he must have had an appointment with you, so it should not have been a surprise. If I was the appraiser I would not have entered your home if you refused to mask, If I was his boss I would have been fine with his refusal....the guy should be able to refuse unsafe work.

You answered in your above post at the same time I posted this, feel free to ignore what I am saying.

Fearing it or not has nothing whatsoever to do with it. You take measures to avoid passing it to Fred to Sue to Jacky to Don to Greg to Sandy to Jeff to Hank to Dereck who is at high risk of being seriously ill from it.

And in your case to not make the guy choose between violating company policy and losing an appointment.

The real question is would you have let him in if he wasn't wearing a mask.

Well, then there's no need to be conflicted about right or wrong.
