    Does fasting cause muscle loss?

I usually have one meal a day because I enjoy having one large meal in one sitting than splitting them at different times. It’s more filling.

If I’m in a surplus at the end of the day, and I’m fasting for 23 hours, would my body start breaking down my muscle if I start feeling hungry?

Would I lose muscle if I’m trying to lose fat or bulk, as long I’m in a slight caloric deficit or surplus while fasting?

Or should I spare a few calories to have some protein shakes throughout the day?

fasting is not optimal for gaining or retaining muscle, but it's possible

Short answer: I would have a protein shake at 2 other points during the day just to be sure.

The long answer is in here: https://www.nutritiontactics.com/mea...ein-synthesis/

Most muscle is built (or re-built) at night while you are sleeping and your body is at rest which means that as long as you have protein in your system at that point you should be reasonably okay on the OMAD eating style.

However, keep in mind that your body can only mobilize so much energy from fat stores throughout the day and that amount gets smaller as you get leaner over time meaning that at some point your body will likely have to resort to autophagy (the breaking down of cells for energy) in order for you to keep functioning, more so if you engage in increased physical activity during your fasting periods.

So basically the more obese that you are, the easier OMAD is on your body's lean mass. Once you start to lean out you may wish to consider another method for maintaining your weight or continuing your fat loss.
