Opinion: Climate change is a losing issue for Republicans

The same as gun control is a losing issue for democrats, Republicans need to get on board with climate change, not skirt around or deny it..
Climate change doesn't just equate to the change in temperature. There's a catastrophic collapse in species and forests globally.

Commercial fishing is depleting our oceans, corals are dying a pace nobody has ever seen before. Argue all we want about global temperatures, but the collapse in biodiversity is a plain fact. Deforestation is a fact. Overfishing is a fact. There's no way to get ar

Republicans need to join with democrats to fight this change to stay in power.

Not American but I'd gladly let people open carry in exchange for a mutual political consensus on not wrecking the ecosystem. Climate change is the single most important challenge humanity currently faces.

“Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.”

I think every year that goes by people learn that climate change is a hoax. I don't think it would be wise for the republicans to agree with a hoax.

Man made climate change is a global issue, a drastically overhyped issue... but a global issue nonetheless.

Some people are dumb and don’t seem to understand this: unless you force other nations to slash carbon emissions, the green house effect is still going to be present even if the USA cuts theirs down to literally ZERO.

100% agree. Fighting over whether this is a hoax or a real thing prevents any meaningful debate over the real issue, which is what to do about it. I definitely don't believe a giant global tax where the worst offenders are let out of it is the right answer at all, but at the same time we're never going to get to the right answer as long as one side is completely entrenched in the belief the whole thing is some sort of conspiracy.

Agreed. It's a losing position for Republicans. There are going to be plenty of young adults who might be fiscally conservative and/or pro second amendment, pro life, etc., but the single issue of climate change can be strong enough to make some of those potential Republicans become independents.

It's a bad look for Republicans because it makes them look like they are fighting positive progress. Clean energy is the future. Period. Instead of fighting the Green New Deal with climate change deniers they should have offered a more practical approach and solution to combating climate change. That was a missed opportunity.

Republicans are already doing what needs to be done. Clean air, clean water, renewable resources, etc.

They just arent as apt to manipulate the market to get it done and arent as alarmist as Dems. The transition to cleaner energy is happening and the US is way low on carbon emissions for a 1st world country.

    Yes and No...

The GOP is wrong to deny climate change as it is real.

That does not mean the leftist wealth redistribution scheme is the answer. Destroying our economy as the 3rd world countries' populations want the nice things we already have isn't going to save the world it might even make it worse.

If the environmentalists pushed the conservative message of "you are responsible for fixing the mess you make" they would make a lot of progress.

Saying send tax revenue to China and India to help them pollute less isn't going to help.

Which means unless you conquer and kill/oppress the people in those nations.... You don't have much of a say in what those people do.

The best thing we can do is stop pollution in the areas we control and hope others do the same.

Claiming it’s a hoax and claiming climate change is going to turn earth into Venus in 30 years are two sides of the same idiot coin imo.

Questioning the science behind human influenced climate change is not inherently bad... that’s the entire point of science, you can and should question it thoroughly.

The problem is we’ve gotten to the point that even suggesting that the models used to extrapolate co2 influence might be wrong gets you labeled as a heretic by the cult of blue haired trolls.

I'm ok with clean energy, but it shoudl apply to the globe, not just the West or not just America. Gotta be logical...if it even exits.

Not an important issue. We want clean air and water of course. After covering those bases, any minor effect man may have will solve itself as technology naturally advances.

Too little too late. I DGAF about the temperature to be honest because it’s not occurring at the rate dems say it is.

    The reality is that:

    - Humans are trash at long term planning, when something won't be an issue for generations then a lot of people don't give a fuk.
    - Humans are generally low intelligence when it comes to science, complex topics take decades to master but these days people read a blog and think they know everything so are justified having an equal voice.
    - There's no global consensus, when China is pumping out more CO2 then it's hard to convince your own citizens that they should make sacrifices while worse offenders don't.
    - It's pathetic that rather than being able to discuss solutions you need to bash your head against a wall to even convince people who failed high school level science that it's even a real issue, in a democracy how do you make changes when the inmates essentially have the keys to the asylum.

Like you said, even without climate change we're absolutely fuking the planet, but who cares when society is geared towards excess and narcissism.

Preservation is more like humans are a blight that shouldn't be allowed to disrupt nature.

We can see in this thread that even most conservatives think climate change is real.

Its just not the highest priority.

I DO think we need to get off oil sooner than later.

    Thoughts Misc?

Overfishing and deforestation aren’t climate change issues. Those are particular environmental issues.

I am actually very pro environment, as are a tremendous amount of Conservatives. Remember it was Theodore Roosevelt - a Republican, that created the national park system.

Instead of the world focusing on the USA. They should be looking at India, China, Brazil, and other third world countries that are polluting the water and air, or have massive deforestation occurring in their nation.

One thing that I would like to see is the removal of all dams and replaced with nuclear power plants - hopefully nuclear fusion.

I disagree with this though, I don’t think the free market will fix this. I also don’t think we need extremely intrusive government regulation either though, I think there is a happy medium.

For example, if the free market reigns supreme, we’ll end up with the Ohio river catching on fire again. The river Thames is just now starting to get some wildlife back and it’s still extremely polluted.

I disagree. Its clear there is human-driven rise in global temperatures. The question is "how" much...but we are having an impact.

Yes but a lot of those issues will be solved soon as technology improves. Energy for example will be free and clean in the next few decades.

Yeah I would rather see more investments made into nuclear fusion source of energy rather than wind/solar. Something like a 80/20 split fusion/green.

That would solve a lot of energy problems with the only byproduct being helium.

That’s the thing with Biden, he doesn’t have any plan for nuclear energy investment. He only has his “green new deal” stuff and I don’t think he really understands what the GND is and only saying he’s for it to win the far left vote. If he did any research he would see the need for nuclear investment over wind/soil.

No evidence that man made emissions are causing the climate change. If it so happens we are, are you prepared to go to war with China, North Korea, India, and Russia? They pollute more than us and they will not follow in our footsteps. The green new deal is all about control and dems love control. What’s the purpose behind the green new deal? It’s to actually wreck the economy, so in the aftermath they can put us all into communist work camps because we have no choice. Plan 1 destroy the system, plan 2 make us dependent.
