I Wish I Could Believe in Religion/Afterlife (srs, debbie downer warning)

Not sure if it's just because myself and family are getting older, and/or all the bullchit going on this year, but I've been thinking a lot more about death and the loss of loved ones lately.

I've been an atheist since I was 13, and as I've gotten older my lack of faith has only become more cemented, although I truthfully wish that wasn't the case. The idea of total death and void didn't use to bother me as much, but I think a lot of that was due to teenage nihilism and just being youthful and not spending a lot of time dwelling on mortality.

It's depressing as hell watching my dad grow older and knowing that he will continue to wither and gray until his last days. It's sad to know that's the future that awaits myself, my partner, and my mom too.

I sincerely wish I could believe in some sort of religion or "soul" that can go on to continue living, that I won't lose myself and everything that makes me "me" and could go on with my loved ones after death, but I just can't bring myself to believe in that. I've never seen, felt, or heard anything in my entire life that has pushed me to believe in an afterlife.

I'm so envious of the comfort and complacency that religious people must have. To wholeheartedly believe that the "end of their life" is not really the "end". I sincerely wish I could have that mindset, I can only imagine how liberating it is to not have such a concern and depression regarding mortality.

What if you did out that you could never truly die? Would you find that comforting, or terrifying?

What if your afterlife turns out to be the lives of other people...perhaps all other people, and animals.

Would that comfort you, or change your behavior in the here and now?

I've thought about that before as well - That eternal life itself may actually be torture in it's own way, but who knows. It's definitely another aspect of the whole puzzle that doesn't entirely fit for me.

Reincarnation to me seems to be the same as death. If I have no recollection of past lives, then I have no connection to my past person or relationships.

Not sure if either of those concepts would comfort me, but maybe. I wouldn't change my behavior, I don't live my life in a way that I question my morality or chit like that. I try to stay relatively active, keep goals, and spend time with people I enjoy, etc.

Spoiler alert: When you die, the lights go out.

My own take on it: just maybe, as you are not alive to observe time, an infinite amount of time passes instantly. Given that in an infinite amount of time passing, you (not the acutal you that you are now, but some other kind of you) will re-attain consciousness as another person/being.

I think we're all incarnations of the same being...God, the universe...the great whatever. A being that cannot die, and spends eternity tricking itself into new experiences by pretending to be lots of beings for comfort and entertainment. Perhaps, out of an abundance of creative energy and love...although it is ultimately self love and selfish.

I think it's good that your subjective YOU does perish at death. Beauty comes in part from a fleetingness. Like, a rainbow or a beautiful flower. A perfect cool breeze on a warm day in the sunshine.

To truly enjoy these things you really have to let go and accept that it's OK for you, and everything and everyone else...to die. Don't begrudge your own fleeting nature any more than a flower should begrudge it's own.

    Flourish in your time.

I find the concept of black holes and time dilation fascinating just because in a sense that seems like "another world" or alternate reality to our own. Space in itself is so simultaneously beautiful and terrifying that in a way it's almost "spiritual" all on it's own.

I read a concept once that considered there were entire universes of smaller dimensions inside of black holes. That the "spaghettification" compresses the object down to fit into the cross-dimensional point of travel. It's an interesting concept because it could imply that universes of smaller dimensions also have their own 2D (or whatever) black holes, or even that our universe is also contained inside some massive black hole of a universe with higher dimensions above us.

When you accept consciousness as the function of attained brain states you would conclude that eventually they will happen again...at some point, with the continuity being the relative functional equivalence.

However, it also opens the door to all of that happening in the present with divergent and convergent brain thought experiments and so on...resulting in "people" being more like organs of a larger being.

Try to reframe your view into the fact that you only have one shot at doing things worthwhile, you don't need to be bogged down trying to get into some fantasy afterlife. Then just head off further down the Physics rabbit hole and enjoy the possibility of the block universe where we have no free will or how you're almost certainly a simulation (I mean you're the simulation for me ofc).

Basically this. I find the implications of eternal life far more horrifying and distressing than the implications of atheism. I'm basically the opposite of OP, wishing I could be an atheist.

There are two options OP. Accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal savior to wash all your sins on judgment day and live blissfully for eternity, or what I quoted above. Salvation is a personal choice and the gift of God. Take the free gift.

If we are all incarnations of God(which I agree) then all love would obviously be self love, but I disagree about the selfish part. Sometimes I think about the story of Jesus and His suffering and think it is really about how we are all children of God, and how God experiencing reality through us is what allows us to return upon death(and some may read that and think wtf?, but it’s a pretty deep concept that I don’t have time to dive into right now). Some may say that God is selfish for allowing suffering, but I say that God suffers right along with us, because as you mention we are all incarnations of Him. He is willing to experience all of that suffering in order to allow us to return to Him.

You know who else thought everyone should think they're their own gods? Satan.

The horrifying nature of reality is the ultimate blackpill. We are utterly insignificant mayflies and nothing we ever do will ever matter on the universal scale.

That said, the keys to enjoying life are pretty simple:

    a) Set goals and meet them. This creates satisfaction, which is much more successful than pleasure chasing.
    b) Develop meaningful relationships with friends and family.

None of this actually matters of course. But it feels good, because we're just emotional meat sacks trapped by our evolution.
    Cope or Rope boyos.

“Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.”

The way I see it is that either A) there is no afterlife and this is it. You will be dead/not conscious and therefore be unable to lament that there is no afterlife, let alone have any thought process or feelings. Or B) There is and hopefully it's great lol.

Edit: As someone who has ridden a thin line between life and death through hypoxia and hypothermia for hours via nitrous oxide abuse, it feels/seems like there is much more to this life/reality.

I was born in a religious household. Became agnostic as I grew older. I don't know what the hell I believe, but I do envy those "who found faith"

I didn't suggest that I was my own God, but rather that God lives in all of us...and everything. God is not the tree, but rather God is with the tree.

Edit: and my view recommends Jesus's two commandments in due course of thought

    1) love God (Being itself)
    2) love your neighbors as yourself

Panentheism is not a Satanic viewpoint. It is not related to the character set or events described in the Christian Bible, but a theistic viewpoint regarding metaphysics.
