    Bulk or Cut to start?

    Hi All,

A little about me first. I'm a 38 year old male. I use to be very active and played regular rugby up until I was bout 28 and went to the gym speradically and was in generally good condition. Roll forward 10 years and having stopped rugby due to a shattered ankle and then having a family I had/have become very unfit and over weight.

I'm 5'7 and weighed 186lbs on the 6th July. I decided then I wanted to make a change and do body building (not to compete, just change my physique). I've read just about everything I can find so having a good, but probably very basic, understanding of what I should be doing. I've been buying equipment slowly (been a nightmare as everything is sold out due to covid) and doing the exercises I can based on what equipment I had.

I am now down to 162lbs currently and I'm going to guess about 20% bf (I think I've uploaded pictures in my profile). I am now about to start the fierce 5 routine as I now have all the equipment to do this from home (I was so excited to put together the power rack at the weekend!). This seems like a great routine to do over the next 6 months.

My one big question though which I couldn't find an answer to is whether I should get leaner first and then build muscle from there (and if so what % should I get down to first?), or should I just start bulking from my current weight? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on your weight loss! I would recommend you start weightlifting immediately with calories at maintenance or even a small deficit. During the first few months you should be able to build muscle and lose fat as the lifting will be a novel stimulus for your body (newbie gains). Just ensure you have adequate protein (0.7-1g/lb) and adhere to your program. Good luck!

Great job on the fat loss so far. Bulking from your current % probably not a good idea. I'd agree with above go maintenance or slight deficit for a while then re evaluate. I'd lean towards deficit.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll stay in deficit as a I have been for the last 3 months then for a little while longer.
