Just get a basic USB 3 external drive, they sell them at all sorts of electronics stores and so on. Back everything up and replace that mechanical drive with a SSD.

Get a new Samsung SSD and use the Data Migration Software to migrate your data to the new drive. Wipe the old drive and throw it away.

Ahh, now that I am caught up, just get a secondary SATA cable and plug it in directly to the motherboard, then do the migration.

I just ****ed up mine. I was overclocking my ram and went too far. Computer went into infinite boot loop. I shut off power from the back. Turned it back on and I can't boot up windows off my nvme drive now. Just get blue screen errors. I created a recovery usb and spent all day doing startup repair and some other stuff to no avail. feelsbadman

Not sure what to do at this point besides wipe the drive and do a fresh install.

Take cmos battery out and hold power button for 30 sec to reset bios? If it truly was just the ram being too overclocked that should do it

Yes, you would need a USB to sata for external.

    Just do it internally.

Well I can still boot from another drive connected to the same motherboard. A few months ago I actually mirrored this older drive to the new nvme which isn't working now but the old drive still is. Do you still think it's a bios issue if I can still boot from the older drive?

start backing up as soon as you can. Back up your most important files first. Also the windows install and program files and all that arent as important since you can just reinstall those or redownload them.

The personal files, photos ect start backing those up immediately.

If you hear clicking and it starting to spin up then stopping then finally spinning up, its on its last legs.

+1 on this in addition buy a SSD drive the 1TBs now arent even that expensive then use (free) Macrium Reflect to clone it. It will be like nothing ever happend and 100xs faster.

There is normally 2-6. I'd be surprised if there was only one. What model computer and/or motherboard(if custom build).

    Asus rog g55vw laptop

    https://www.empowerlaptop.com/p/asus-g55vw-motherboard/

    ??

So you just open it up ,connect the ssd and the software will do the rest ?

So what ,a 6" sata cable ? Are some faster than others at transferring ?

When it's done do you have to put new drive in old drives slot or will it boot no matter what slot

Sorry, I didn't know it was a laptop. You'll probably have to go external unless it has the option for a secondary HDD caddy, where the CD-ROM drive would normally go.

You would need a 2.5" SATA SSD.

    Something like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500.../dp/B0784SLQM6

    $60 for 500gb, also comes in 256 or 1tb

Then you need a SATA to USB adapter like this:
    https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-.../dp/B00HJZJI84

from there, multiple ways to do it but probably easiest is to use the adapter to connect the new ssd to the usb port and use cloning software to clone the internal drive to the ssd, then open up the access panel and swap out the harddrive with the new ssd

also if you are going to buy an external harddrive to use for backups you could back up the image of the internal drive to that first, then load that onto the SSD.

They are basically all the same, you want an SATA to USB 3 adapter. they could be a straight cord like the one I linked which is fine for what you need. If you see them include a small power adapter with it, that is so it can also be used with larger 3.5" desktop drives which you dont need. Just make sure it is a USB type A connector, which is the standard large size USB connector that your laptop has, not the smaller types used on cellphones, all the SATA to USB adapters ive seen are.

No, Windows 10 is the best operating system yet, but don't install that unless you find compatible drivers for your laptop.

Since you are hooking it up external, I don think there is any software you can use to migrate(clone your drive).

My recommendation would be to remove the old hard drive and replace it with the new one. Do a clean install of windows/drivers, then hook up your old HDD as USB and copy your files over.

You can backup your files to external all you want, but you said your primary is dying, so what you actually want to do is replace it. Right?

You can try this, but I don't know if it will do Sata to External USB. http://ssd.samsungsemi.com/ecomobile...on%20Setup.exe

If not the only way to replace your drive is to clone it internally (sata to sata), or copy the files you want to a new drive after it has a fresh windows installation on it.
