Wasteland 3 Official Thread - Anyone a fan of this?

    Anyone buying this game?

Releases 28th August and it's free on gamepass.

Never played the Wasteland games, but it seems like a lot of people enjoy this franchse and I love turn based games and this one looks like it might be a lot of fun so I'm kind of hyped to see how it feels.

Holy **** is it really coming out this month? I loved WL2 and thought the only thing it was missing was a multiplayer component. It's like Divinity but OG fallout style post-apocalyptic. Pretty stoked about this one, the gameplay trailer looked great and how multiplayer works seemed really well done.

In Wasteland 3, you can start a multiplayer-specific campaign with a friend. The campaign will then be tied to both of you. Once started, you won't be able to "replace" your friend with another, but if either of you can't continue playing for any reason, it will be possible to "spin off" a single-player campaign from your multiplayer world state.

Both players run separate Ranger squads, sharing from the pool of available companion NPCs to build your teams. You can't both have the same companions, but you can move a companion from one squad to another. The two squads can travel together, but you can also split up and explore the world separately.

The ability to split up is a choice, and it has important consequences. In Wasteland 3, we will support asynchronous multiplayer. This means that if your friend goes offline, you'll still be able to continue playing, and the actions you take will be reflected in the world when your friend logs back in.

Sound design is good, but audio levels are all over the place. The first thing I did was turn down the wind sounds, because it was drowning everything else out. Music sometimes overwhelmed the voice acting. Some impact sounds felt too weak, especially certain guns or when I had Scotchmo whaling on things. It's not bad, but it could use some fine-tuning.
I was pleasantly surprised by all the voice acting! I knew major conversations would be voiced, but I wasn't expecting all the other stuff! The voices all sound pretty good, too. I mean, Victory is annoying, but that's kind of his thing.
The environmental destruction is a lot of fun. Not quite fully destructible environments, but the amount that's there is still very satisfying. Being able to smash open containers or kick down doors is a nice touch.
Input response is a little laggy. I mean, I know this is just an Alpha, but I figure it's worth mentioning anyway. I often had to wait up to a full second before the game would register I had clicked on something. Sometimes I had to click 2 or 3 times to get it to respond. Which brings me to the other issue here...
The game has no tactical pause. I'm not even sure if everything stops moving when you've brought up the main menu! That's a little jarring, in a game where careful movement and split-second timing is so important. I'd love to have the game autopause when spotting a trap, for example, so I don't immediately blunder into it. I'd love to be able to tell all my rangers where I want them to stand, then unpause and watch them take their positions.
I'd also love to see a combat log of some sort, but I guess that's a secondary concern. It just makes it easier to tell what's going on, sometimes. It would also be nice to have an easier way to tell what some of those status conditions do. I assumed freezing an enemy would immobilize them, but it just seemed to slow them down a little. It would be nice to know the exact effects ahead of time.
Elevations are messy. You can fire a rocket or shotgun at someone on a different level of elevation, but you can't throw a grenade at them. Standing on a slope seems to do weird things to the line of sight, and I sometimes ended movement on a stairway because the preview told me I'd have line of sight, only to then not have line of sight. But hey, it's an Alpha.
The Kodiak was unexpected. I knew we'd get some partial functionality with the vehicles, but I wasn't expecting to have complete control over it. It definitely needs some fine-tuning, but it was pretty cool - and way bigger than I was expecting it to be. Weird that I can move it around without having a pilot in it, but I'm expecting that to change.
There's an impressively wide array of equipment in the Alpha. Like, seriously, wow. One of my pet peeves with Wasteland 2 was that a lot of the gear you found was pretty bland, but it's a lot more interesting in Wasteland 3. I was genuinely excited to see what I'd find in each new container!
Three slot armor system. 'Nuff said.
I'm not crazy about the RNG-based enemy drops. I know that balancing an in-game economy can be difficult, but I much prefer a WYSIWYG sort of drop system. I mean, there's so much cool stuff you can get from those enemies, but if you're unlucky you might never end up seeing a big chunk of it.
I'm a little sad to see that the Crafting button has vanished, but I did find a few crafting items during one of my test runs. Very interesting. I'm assuming the button was just removed temporarily for the sake of the Alpha, but I'd love to hear an official response on whether or not it's going to make it into the final game. Same with weapon mods.
Character selection is a little twitchy. It's generally to the player's benefit to have their whole party selected, for the sake of skill checks, but going into the inventory screen deselects everyone except for the character you're currently looking at. That occasionally caused me to flub a skill check, or accidentally leave half my party behind while I was exploring.
Gore effects are off-the-charts impressive, at least to me. Directional blood splatter during combat, impressively gory deaths after landing a successful called shot, people being reduced to a thin red paste by explosives - very nice! I especially liked how the blood looked against the ice.
I'm hoping we'll see some more creative mutants this time around. Don't get me wrong, I think the Breathers look great, and the robots look fantastic! In comparison, the animals all just look like animals - even the "growlers" were just bears. Again, that was one of my minor pet peeves about Wasteland 2, where you spent a lot of time fighting badgers, frogs, and lizards of unusual size - instead of something more interesting and memorable.
Not a huge fan of the skill names. I always sort of rolled my eyes at the "Ass Trinity" in Wasteland 2, so I'm not really crazy about it returning in Wasteland 3. What's more, now we're getting other silly skill names like "Nerd Stuff" and "Stealthy ****". Come on. What's wrong with names like "Persuasion" and "Computer Use"?
On a similar note, I feel like Victory really went kind of bananas with the swearing. I mean, so much that I was genuinely worried it was going to trip Youtube's anti-profanity filters. I mean, look, I'm obviously a bit biased there given that I run a tiny little channel of my own, but I feel like I'd still find it overbearing even if I was't trying to make videos.

I mean, look, I'm obviously a bit biased there given that I run a tiny little channel of my own, but I feel like I'd still find it overbearing even if I was't trying to make videos.

    wat?

Strong red, strong post ..... Have you played the game?

Never played part 1 or 2 but this game looks great, divinity 2-like with 4x battle mechanics.

The game looks super polished for sure. I will be trying it tonight via game pass and I certainly cannot wait.

    This is another excellent review:

I loved Wasteland 2 and I played a few hours of the Wasteland 1 remaster. The remaster is still tough to play, but I appreciate it as an origin game. WL2 was everything I could ask for in a tactical wasteland RPG, it was only missing multiplayer. WL3 is an insta buy for me

Playing single player to enjoy the story at a more relaxing pace. What ranger recruits did you guys pick up? I feel like sasquatch is a must.

The music in this game is fantastic, especially in some of the battles when it picks up. Havent gotten very far as im still in colorado springs but this game is amazing so far

Ye, playing it here. Amazing so far and oldschool fun. Just feel the running is a bit bugged/fukked, sometimes teammates are unselected or don't move at all.
Next to some other bugs, still fun to play.
