Ignorant question: Was Hitler a socialist or not? (Reps & thoughts)?

Nazism was a Fascist ideology and described as a nation that was led by a dictator, suppression of enemies, and demanded obedience to authority.

But didn't Hitler adopt so many economic socialist ideas:
-Big government and disrupted and took control of private property
    -Implemented National Socialist Program (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation...ialist_Program)
-Implemented welfare and public assist programs
    -Gun Control
    -Believed in Social equality
-against liberalism, they controlled the economy through syndicates, labour laws and bureaucracy
-In their propaganda and rhetoric they stated individualism was a bad thing

How were Hitler and Stalin's systems and governments so similar yet they are labeled on either side of the left-right spectrum. Both dictators, big governments, social programs, etc. Was it because Stalin's communism was a government built on the fight against class and socioeconomic inequality while Hitler's war and government was based on race?

Apologies for the ignorance. I want to brush up my history on a Saturday morning.

    edit:

how accurate is this statement this may solve my confusion on the topic:

The Nazis were left-wing by American standards but right-wing by European standards. It’s important to understand differences in terminology. American conservatism is not equivalent to European conservatism. European right-wing politics assumes a big, broad government interfering in massive ways in the economy and in private life. American conservatism rejects that notion. The Nazis were right-wing compared to the Communists, but they called themselves socialists because they were in favor of tremendous intervention in the private sector in business, a nationalized health care scheme, confiscation of weaponry from citizens. Context matters in making these calls. Marine Le Pen, for example, is widely derided as a right-wing figure, but in the United States, half of her agenda mirrors Bernie Sanders rather than Paul Ryan.

It's not as simple as that. This is a pretty good video imo. Fascism was a defensive response to marxism and liberalism. I will say american "conservatism" hasn't conserved anything. And they have bowed down to these big corporations who turned out to be the biggest sjw's of them all lmao. And according to conservatives "free marketplace of ideas", degeneracy rules all, because it appeals to the animalistic base desire of us all (and there is money in that).

Hitler did what hitler wanted. He was a complete fascist dictator. He ran with absolute authoritative power.

That doesn't mean he didn't heavily consider the opinions of experts around him, but it does mean they did not have the option to over rule him.

The Economist had to invent a new word (privatisation) to describe what the Nazis were doing to their economy, and at a time when many countries were nationalising parts of their economy after the Great Depression the Nazis were privatising things that used to be nationalised under the Weimar. Of course Nazi Germany was not a "free market" capitalist economy, and it did have things like a welfare state, but it was still fundamentally capitalist. Many private companies like Siemens and Krupp got insanely wealthy during their reign.

What happened was that Nazism originally had an economic left-wing faction to it, along with the whole racial/nationalist aspects. They called it National Socialism because first and foremost, the Nazis were an anti-Bolshevik party, and socialism in those days was seen in those days as an alternative to communism, rather than a synonym for it like in R&P threads.

Socialism was them trying to say "we're populist, but we're not communist". The Nazis had to be a big-tent party early on to get enough votes to survive, so they were kind of vague about their economic plans and made room for both hardline conservatives and leftists who were cool with nationalism.

Anyway, so the top dog of the party was of course Hitler, and he was a right winger. But the #2 in the party early on was his BFF and possible ghey lover named Ernst Rohm, who was a 100% left wing socialist. Rohm also commanded the brownshirts, who by the 30s got to be a paramilitary force literally 2 million soldiers strong. They ended up being bigger than the actual German army, and by and large they tended to be left wing.

The brownshirts were a useful tool for terrorizing and killing and beating the chit out of the Nazis' enemies, so Hitler tolerated them until he got into power. But once he took the driver's seat and it was time to go re-arm, purge-the-Jews mode and chit, there was no room for internal dissent or inner-party factions. Everyone had to be on the same page. And Rohm, a leftist with his own massive leftist army existing outside of the German government structure, started looking like less of a tool and more of a threat. So they executed him along with the rest of the brownshirt leadership in the Night of the Long Knives. That de-fanged the left wing of the Nazi party, and after 1934 they were socialist in name only.

Tl;dr - the Nazis did have a socialist wing, but it outlived its usefulness. After the mid 1930s, they were always right-wing. The name was just a vestigial remainder from their early beginnings.

And without the "socialist" in their name, no one would think Nazi Germany as socialist. All the "big government?" chit that OP is talking about isn't plans for a welfare state, it's for a totalitarian control state - and economically, they were very much in bed with big business.

If Trump had the balls to implement social programs that the masses would love, like universal healthcare and infrastructure development + make work programs, he could have his dream of being president for life as he'd have so much support it would be impossible to remove him. Eventually there will be someone who comes along who realizes this and also has the ability to connect with their base the way Trump does. If they can harness these two together the USA will willingly submit to such a person. The closest thing we've had so far is FDR...eventually someone will come along and use populism with a bit of socialism and become as popular as all get out.

Also, Hitler was both a fascist and a socialist because the two are not mutually exclusive.

Hitler was pretty brilliant, but in the wrong way. He built up his country and infrastructure to fight wars on 2 fronts. They had brilliant engineering (NASA got their engineers for our space program from Germany). But starting wars and the Holocaust aren't right. If he could have directed his energy in a better way for the world, the world could be a better place. To quote Steve Martin "But Noooo, he couldn't do that".
