Gaining weight - need to lose the fat. Newbie alert

    Hi all.

I truly hope someone can help me here in this great community.
Without digging too deep into my life/back story - I suffer from severe depression, anxiety and have a stressful job (but love what I do).
The past 3 years of my life have been pretty bad being involved in a very abusive situation and lots of emotional and mental instability in that regard.

Slowly coming out of it and given other factors, I have recently gained a ton of weight I believe. Clothes don't fit me as good. I remember 1 particular pair of Jeans/pants that used to fit last year, no longer fit at all - I cannot even do up the buttons!

I am not a gym rat and my job involves me sitting for most of the day and night (I work long hours and own my own business). You see the pattern here...

I do the best I can to not eat junk food but ... it happens.

I am determined to make a change and be more healthy. Truly am.

The question is, what is the best way to kick start weight loss, specifically from the belly area?
Is there something I can do to feel and see a good initial weight loss in a quick manner? Now, I don't mean that I want a quick loss solution - none at all. I want to do (and eat) things which kick start the process that I can feel in the beginning that I am noticing a good change and continue pushing it.

I am a male, in my almost mid 30s (holy crap, when did that happen?!) and weight around the 240lbs area.

I really want to be healthy and look and feel good. I don't like shortcuts and don't want them.
I don't have good strength but want to build that up slowly also so I can do workouts in the gym to help lose weight. I don't want to bulk up or anything.

But I think the first thing is in terms of diet and basic exercise on how to best kick start the weight losing process? I feel so uncomfortable and disgusted with myself but sadly life truly has played a big factor lately. I want to change that.

I appreciate your input and support and I am actually looking forward to even starting a personal diary/blog/journal and have you folks follow it and for all of us, especially me, to see the difference.

I used to wear 34" pants and now seems to be hitting the 40" area. Gained at least 4" around the hips in the last year but big on the belly.

I do not smoke, I do not drink nor do any kind of drugs.

I used to drink soda but not any more. Maybe once in a couple of weeks (1 can) but that's it. I do try to drink as much water as I can, so that's something I guess.

What do you recommend to start with? What kinds of foods/recipes or shakes?

I am excited, finally. I really want to do this. And trust me, deep depression and anxiety... is not good. I see the pain it causes me and one of them is weight gain and I feel so ugly, yuk and sluggish. I am done with that. Totally done.

    Thank you

I'm not so good with the psychological side, maybe others can help

But I can help with the what-you-need-to-do side - start by reading the 'basics' sticky thread at the top of the page and if there is anything that isn't clear, come back to us with questions.

    1. You need professional counseling regarding your mental health, not advice from random people on the internet.

    2. "Recipes & shakes" won't help you lose the fat. Learning what your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is and also learning how to weight/measure/log literally everything that you put into your mouth so as to know how many calories you are really consuming and establishing a deficit from your TDEE ...will.

    3. If you own your own business, then unless that business means sitting in a car driving all day, you should be free to make up the rules as to how you spend that time so frankly you should be able to get up and move around as needed throughout the day. Even getting out of the chair and moving around for 5 minutes every half hour would be a start. Anything that you can do to increase your TDEE will help. Start trying to get in 10k steps per day, take the stairs rather than elevators, Etc.

    4. You can't choose where the fat will come off first. It will come off of the "Belly area" when it comes off from there so don't obsess over where the fat comes off so much as focus on simply losing it...period.

    5. You won't be training in the gym to "bulk up" while in a deficit. You weight train while losing fat in order to help preserve whatever muscle you may actually have on your frame currently under all of the fat. Failing to do that will mean that you will lose too much lean mass and ultimately you will just end up a smaller version of your current fat self rather than a better proportioned, leaner version. The weight training will help cause more of your "Weight losses" to be "Fat losses" overall.

    Thanks.

    1) yes I know. I was just explaining in general my situation, that's all. Not asking for help on that regard from the internet.
    3) I work in IT and pretty in demand so yeah, I actually do, unfortunately, sit all day and night.

I think I need help to begin here, specifically what to eat that is healthy/nutritious to start losing the weight. I know I consume more than 2500 cal's but given stress and all, I eat more than what I should.

So you work in IT. Stand up and talk on the phone, install a desktop lift solution that can move the entire desktop up two feet and back down again and get used to standing/walking in place for part of the day. Buy an underdesk elliptical device and pedal while you sit. If you really want to make changes then you will find solutions not excuses.

"Healthy foods" are not going to fix the problem if you don't bother to weigh/measure/log all of what you are consuming each day in order to insure that you are in a calorie deficit. Example: broiled chicken breasts and steamed broccoli are "Healthy" but they still won't help you lose weight if you eat 4000 calories worth of them every day. Yes, learning how to do this and actually following through on weighing and logging everything takes time and effort but it is also the only real way for you to learn portion sizes, macro nutrient distribution and calorie control.

Failing to understand those things is why 95% of people who manage to lose weight with some fad diet end up re-gaining all or even more fat once they go back to their original eating patterns.
