Safe to lift with face mask on?

Where I live they are finally opening the gyms after 2 months of shut down, however they have guidelines and regulations. One of them is to wear a face mask at all times while inside.

I read somewhere that training or lifting with a face mask can be harmful, and even deadly. You can faint from the lack of oxygen and the excess carbon dioxide build up. Come to think of it you can maybe even drop the weights on yourself if you faint.

Do you guys think it’s safe to train with the mask on, or should I just stick to my bench and little free weights I have at home?

It's dumb at best. I would comply and just leave your nose out. I understand this "defeats the purpose" but these makeshift masks are useless to begin with

Those are two diff questions that don't depend on each other. But how safe it is depends on how well you can breathe with the mask on, since it'd be similar to wearing one of those elevation training masks that some people wear to purposely reduce airflow.

Not that I'm recommending this, but if you don't care about public health issues or gym rules and own a sharp pen/knife, you can probably find an unnoticeable solution if you don't feel comfortable with the airflow.

Make a face mask that has lots of space/holes over mouth and nose area, like a fish net. It's still a mask...

I'm assuming they're talking about a medical or cloth mask, what you're referencing is those stupid arse elevation training masks. You can train with those cloth masks and have no issues, the elevation training ones are pointless and possibly detrimental.

The cloth masks just helps stop you from spreading germs if you cough or talk, they're quite breathable.

Doubt it. OP says it's a gym requirement and it sounds as if he'd rather not wear one.

Yes I'm referring to the medical cloth masks. They're tight on the face, if you ever tried jogging in one, you really don't get enough oxygen. Plus you'll end up breathing the carbon dioxide you're blowing out more than fresh air.

I have never tried those elevation masks, and not indenting to tbh, i dont see the point.

If you're only concerned about oxygen and not any level of safety for you or others, just wear a bandana or a UV/sports face-neck gaiter, which will be fine to breathe in and should pass your gym's standards.

True, I suppose it would help if OP clarified. I've talked to a few gym employees I know up here (Ontario,Canada) and they think the requirement will only be cloth masks based on current discussion. Nothing concrete yet as far as reopening guidelines though.

You should be fine for lifting maybe just increase rest periods, cardio can always be moved outside. Not ideal but better than not being able to use the gym. I wouldn't advise against openly breaking the rules as you may end up kicked out and not refunded your membership.

The mask won't prevent oxygen. Or keep carbon dioxide in.

The mask will hold back droplets you breathe out to protect others in case you are infected.

THIS. It's less about self protection than the protection of others. I absolutely wouldn't feel safe using a gym where any of the patrons aren't wearing face coverings.

It will severely restrict the oxygen supply, and virtually make any kind of significant effort (think squats, pulldowns, etc) very difficult.
Unless you focus on the smaller muscles, it probably wouldn't be very productive.
