Coronavirus - Good time to car shop?

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/16/gm-o...ronavirus.html

GM is offering 0% financing for 7 years and 4 months deferred payments and other companies are doing something similar.

I don't need a new car, but really interested to see what deals are out there new and used in the coming weeks/months.

If you need 7 year financing you can't afford the vehicle. 100% srs. Yes its a good time to buy, but buy something used from a private seller for maximum savings.

Agreed. Financing a car for 7 years is dumb and as far as GM is concerned they only have 5 year powertrain warranty anyways.

There may be great deals, but if you have extra money it’s one of the best times in recent history to invest. Why put money in a depreciating liability?

if you NEED a car now - 7 years @ 0% would be stupid to pass up. I could pay cash for a car, but i'd be an idiot not to take that cash and invest it instead

No I am not. If you can barely scrape the payments together for 7 years it is far more of a liability than an asset. Lots of vehicles have a 3 year warranty. So what happens in year 5 when it breaks down and you don't have the money to fix it and yet you still have 2 years of payments left?

    Yeah it's a good time.

I should have taken advantage of the power dollars program plus 90 day no monthly payment for the scat pack. I would have owned it instead of leasing it. Brand new 2020 scat packs for 35k. And i still see some used ones, 2018's for like 34k.

Phuck. I should have waited another month. Oh well.

    Can’t we have both?

It’s at least possible they won’t be able to give cars away, used or new. Lease delinquencies are going to rocket. At what point am I not going to be interested? 30% off? 50%? For classics it could be even bigger, it’s happened before..

There's going to be some fantastic cars hitting the market as this thing shakes out. That high risk crowd in the USA collects some cool cars. Florida is going to be 'vette and viper buying nirvana.

sure, but needing it is one thing, taking advantage of it is another.

    very wrong

0% interest is 0% interest, practically same as cash buying, but you get to keep your money in bulk and invest it.

100% disagree. It depends on your financial situation. If you're good with money and your rig is getting long in the tooth, it's a great deal.

You can finance the whole thing including sales tax, have 7 years of free money. Why front money now when it's free over 7 years. $1 today is worth more than $1 tomorrow.

    On the other hand..

If the sticker is 20k, 7 years no interest..aren’t they going to take significantly less for all the cash up front?

And especially now, manufacturers stopping producing, very few buyers, stock everywhere.. my theory would be they’d take 12k cash just to keep the lights on at the dealers. May try it.

Literally contradicted yourself within your first 2 sentences. You don't disagree because I am right. IT DEPENDS ON YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. If your chit isn't in order and you can barely scrape up the monthly payment each month YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE VEHICLE. Plain and simple. This is why people have been outta work for less than an month and already can't pay their bills because hurr durr 0% and I can afford $300 a month currently even though that means I can't save any money.

For the rest of us ready and willing to either pay cash or pay 50% up front obviously it is a good deal. Better deal is to get a discount paying all cash.

GM is offering 0% financing for 7 years and 4 months deferred payments and other companies are doing something similar.

I don't need a new car, but really interested to see what deals are out there new and used in the coming weeks/months.
Its a good time to buy a car if you think you wont need to sell the car in the near future for cash, since the economy is gonna be struggling for a while after this. If you think you can spare the cash for the next few years, then its a good time to buy.

I hope you understand what Im trying to tell you.

Now you're shifting your argument by adding in premises. Nowhere in your post did you mention anything about anyone's financial situation. You made a dumb, blanket statement.

Now GFTO, because you're making yourself look like a fool.
