    I'm a huge V8 guy, but I love the E60 M5

Been looking at E60 M5s lately. The prices are very reachable and it looks like it'd make a good project car. I imagine enthusiasts are paying $20,000 for a well sorted example and another $10,000 saved for maintenance?

over the life of the car? more than 10k in maintenance. Not worth it unless youre a BMW tech/enthusiast.

If youre a ///M fan, go with something newer like a e92 m3

They sound glorious, but seeing stuff on the forums over the years I would never own one. If anything get the 6-speed

I love the E60 platform. I miss mine but I know enough to know better to touch the E60 M5. There's only a few on the road for a reason. Ticking time bombs... all of them

If you're looking at an S85 BMW, set aside as much as you paid for it for future maintenance costs.

For those few days when it's not broken though, one of the best engines in the world.

Whatever you do, stay away from SMG one. I can't stress this enough...this alone can cost you $20k and it's the reason why you find so many for cheap.

If you found a well sorted example with manual and have $10k on the side, I think it would be doable. If I was going that route, I'd find a good BMW shop and have them replace rod bearings - but find a shop that's not going to tell you the engine has to be out. A shop should be able to get that done for $3-5k. Besides the SMG pump failure, this is the biggest weakness on these cars and if you get that taken care of, the rest is just usual BMW stuff with complicated electronics.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.
