    Cut or bulk?

I'm currently 5'9 and about 153 lbs. I cut from 181 to 153 since September. My goal was to cut until 140 lbs since my chest fat is really stubborn or I might have gynecomastia. But a situation came up and I won't be able to access the gym for a good 10 weeks. So what should I do in this situation? My thought is to bulk until mid-May to gain some mass and cut during the 10 weeks so that I won't look completely skinny afterward. Or cut to 140 and maintenance it for the 10 weeks?

What type of training do plan on doing while you can't go to the gym? If you start bulking and don't workout you'll just get fat. You definitely shouldn't be cutting since you have very little muscle mass. You'll just look sickly. Maybe consider eating around maintenance and doing some body weight training. Start a real bulk once you can get into the gym.

That was a good cut, you're in a great position to start a bulk. Everything else I said remains true in my opinion.

Ahh, that makes more sense, I thought you meant you don't have access to the gym right now. I would start bulking now then, just be aware that you may want to sit at maintenance during the 10 weeks you can't go to the gym( and do some form of body weight training at least). Cutting with no liftingis going to lead to muscle loss and you may end up right back where you started.

In my opinion you don't have a chest fat problem, you have a lack of chest muscle problem. Everything will look better once you've added some muscle mass.

Yea I agree with you. But when I flex there's some straitions on both of my upper pec and then there's just the pile of fat on my lower pec. That fat distribution is triggering.

I mean, unless you're stage lean everyone is going to have some fat on their chest. Bigger muscles just make it less apparent. Be careful getting caught up with a little bit of fat causing a great deal of concern. Its tough mentally when you've cut down but its also a huge reason so many people spin their tires and fail to make progress.

Congrats on the cut, big improvement and you're ready to pack on some muscle.

I'm same height as you and when I get lean (10%ish) I'm about 165. Since you are above 10% body fat and are currently 153, I'd say you easily have about 20lb of muscle to add on to your frame. Please keep in mind this is not going to be a one and done thing, like bulk once, cut once, and you're done. Think in terms of years, not months or weeks. It took me years and several bulk/cut cycles to get to where I am (natty).

How long will you be without a gym starting in May? If a long time, I wouldn't even bother "bulking" right now as in eating a lot. You won't accomplish much in 2-3 months. I would eat around maintenance or slightly below and lift hard. And I'd look into bodyweight alternative to use in May when you lose gym access. Dips/pullups can do a LOT for muscle growth and retention.

This is essentially what I did several years ago when I got "fit" for the first time in my life at 31 years old. I ate at a deficit while lifting hard in the gym, and running a lot. In less than a year, I went from skinny-fat 150lb to pretty ripped 143lb. Didn't lose a lot of weight, just recomped essentially.
