What's the highest mileage vehicle you would purchase?

I've been casually looking at Craigslist to find a car to commute in so I can keep miles off my actual nice car. Last night a guy posted a LS400 with 103k miles on it for $3,000. Looks to be garage kept, no rust, but obviously I need to check for oil leaks and odometer rollbacks while I'm there. Ad seems legit though.

I'm just wondering what would be you guys' limit?

There was an Acura TL 2008 for $2,100 but had 189k miles on it. I used to work at a car dealership and we wouldn't sell anything with that high mileage because in the best case scenario a car would probably make it to 250k before it completely fell apart and I'm not just talking engine...

To a certain extent mileage doesn't scare me.. I have taken several vehicles well over 200k miles using them to commute

What I deem worthy to buy would be heavily dictated by price first and foremost & then maintenance records. My current F150 I bought used (Cash) and it had 55k miles on it , but the owner had gotten his oil & fluids changed at his local dealership from the get go so he had access to every single thing that had ever been done to the truck...

Truck currently sits at 178k miles and I have had no major repairs to date.. hell if it gave up tomorrow I wouldn't even be mad at it , I would just toss another motor in and send it!!

As far as the LS400... bruh those damn things are almost indestructible... so much so that I have been keeping an eye out for one myself. Haven't decided if would daily it for nostalgia reasons or use it for ridiculous entertainment...

That's hell of a deal on an LS400.

But as far as highest mileage...it would depend on brand/model. Usually nothing over 160k.

Depends on the vehicle. Any lexus/toyota vehicle I wouldnt hesitate to buy with 100k miles. Im looking at Lx/gx 470s and most I see are 100k+ miles. Thats barely broken in for that vehicle.

I would be comfortable buying an LS400 with 200k. Those things are notoriously reliable

I wouldn't hesitate to buy that Acura. I bought one about 5 years ago and I've never had a problem with it other than a $1 gasket for the power steering, fluid changes and the timing belt change at 100k. It's got 130k now and I wouldn't even consider selling it yet. I plan to go 200k+ before I sell. I'd more than likely keep it as a back up when it goes over 250k. I've heard plenty of people that are over 300k. Search online.

    They are very reliable cars.

Generally stay under 20k miles. I wouldn't ever buy anything beyond the factory warranty because you can not rely on anyone to maintain a vehicle.

I probably won't buy another car over 100k miles. I will certainly own cars past that mileage point but I find at around 100k you start really see how well or poorly maintenance was done to the car before it came to you.

Only car I plan on buying in the future that is even over 5 years old is an R34 Nissan Skyline when they can be imported into the US.

Depends on the condition and who's selling it. Clean AF. No repaint/sprays. Non smoker. Maintenance/upkeep records. Reputable dealer. Non scummy looking SOB private dealer etc.

I'd say the condition of the vehicle and ESPECIALLY the person you are dealing with is key. Not the mileage. You could get something with 120000 that's been garage kept, grocery getter and some highway or get a 30000 cleaned up but driven hard and put away wet pos.

Many factors play a role other than mileage IMO.

I'm more worried about the overall condition than the miles. My mom used to own a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with over 250k miles and it ran like a champ. Only ever needed gas, tires and oil.

If the car hasnt been neglected or ran into the ground, I dont see an issue with a car that has 120k or more miles on it.

I would not pay more than 3k for anything over 100k, unless the owner has a record of all maintenance in which case the most would be 5k-10k depending on the make. ICE cars can last 1 million miles.

over 100k, you're looking at a new transmission, engine problems. Now these things can be done for cheap if you can do it but its only worth it if the original purchase price of the car was low enough.

Id rather pay more for slightly used than pay for a used car.

over 100k, you're looking at a new transmission, engine problems. Now these things can be done for cheap if you can do it but its only worth it if the original purchase price of the car was low enough.
Bro what are you buying for 3k with 100k on it?

Well thats the thing, prices are all over the place on craigslist. You gotta find good deals.

Its better to spend more on a slightly used car than to spend average for a highly used car because the cost of replacement negates what you saved.

If you want to buy high mileage vehicles try to find stuff that’s clean and well kept. Vehicles that only had 1-2 owners since new.

I’ve had a few vehicles with 200k+ miles on they were great. But they were all clean and taken care of.

But do your research on them too... especially older stuff. Sometimes parts are known to fail around certain mileages (like timing chains/belts), and there’s a whole wealth of knowledge on the internet about specific problems vehicles have.

Under 120K definitely running my Blue Driver OBD2 scanner as first screening if it looks good and drives well have it fully inspected by an ASE Certified Mechanic then offer accordingly. Also will run the Carfax and Autocheck.

Casuals will tell you 100k is a lot.

My 1998 ES300 had 274,000 miles and still ran like a champ when I sold it

You'd be a fool to not buy that LS400. Those cars run to 300,000 very easy. Get it thoroughly inspected, if it checks out take the deal

It all depends on what you're doing with. If you're financing it, you want low mileage. If it's an old car like a NSX or S2000 you'll pay even if it has high mileage if the price is right.

I typically would start getting worried about any car around 225,000 km.

Those 2008 TL's are nice. I would look online for common problems and issues from owners. I believe for that gen TL you want the 07/08 because I believe the transmission issues were fixed for those years and I think, but don't quote me, they fixed the slicing on the dashboard as a result of the sun.

If it was like my personal weekend car like a GT3 or GT3 RS or something that's more expensive, honestly like 5k or less.

But if it was a work truck probably around 50k

Tls have alot of transmission problems at 100k. This is because the tranny is buttery smooth but most people dont know that you have to do a transmission flush.

Lexus tend to be more reliable because old people buy them and they tend not to push the car very hard, which is why the seem more reliable.
