    Looking too skinny?

    24 years old, 164 lbs, 5'11"

About 4 weeks ago I got back into training hard in the gym (before this I took a few months off). I started at 171 lbs and have been in a caloric deficit of ~500 calories (2,200 daily intake) and currently sit at 164 lbs as stated above. Losing approximately 1% of my bodyweight a week which I believe is a good area to be in.

My concern is that while I am cutting and also getting back into training (getting stronger on all lifts each session), my waist area seems to be slimming down A LOT. To the point where I look more skinny than I do muscular.

I want to be ~10% BF where I am toned, but I also don't want to look like a twig. So I am a little confused as to what route I should take going forward. I am going on vacation at the end of March and want to look the best that I can in the time I have left, but want to make sure I optimize my routine.

My profile picture is from today, but I will also attach it in case it has not updated.

Any help / advice is appreciated! Thank you.

Not everyone has the requisite muscle mass to be able to achieve 10% bodyfat without looking like a skeleton. It takes years of training and mass building to be able to get down that low.

That being said, you don't look bad at all, but yeah if your goal is really get down that low you're going to have to decide if looking skinny is worth it to you. Otherwise you need to shift focus to building more muscle.
All it takes is consistency, effort, proper nutrition, good programming, and TIME.

Do you think if I continue the deficit for the next two months I will look good / fit as opposed to looking like a skeleton that doesn't eat? Or do you suggest something like a deficit for half that time and maintaining weight for the second month to try and build more muscle / get a more 'full' look?

I would recommend on building muscle at this time in your journey. As already mentioned, there is not enough muscle to carry 10%. In my opinion, with consistent training, 30 is a reasonable expectation to make 10% your goal.

It would be better to choose a route and commit to it 100% and then travel down the other route and commit to that 100%. Will have much better results after completing both of those phases rather than attempting the elusive recomp imo

What do you think the better route would be given my current physique? Keep trimming down and get a more lean BF% then maintain and grind for muscle growth at that BF%? Or maintain where I am at now, and then go into a deficit once I feel I gained enough muscle to not look like a skeleton at 10%?

Start adding muscle. Bulk until you leave, but keep your surplus relatively low so you are't too fat on your trip.

I'm assuming this is a beach type vacation. If the end of March is your target then I would slide back into maintenance and do a mini cut 3-4 weeks before your trip. Don't bulk!

I did the same thing I'm recommending two years ago and I hit it just right. I was a little flat the first day of my vacation so I picked up my carbs.

It's the age old dilemma of looking good dressed/undressed. I always go with the latter in this case.

Sorry I should have clarified, yes it’s a beach vacation. I think in that case I will maintain my current BF% to build more muscle and go into a deficit 3-4 weeks before the trip. Appreciate the advice!
