    Shaving razors

I'm looking for a new brand to use/try. Switched from Gillette to Harry's around a year ago but I've noticed a drop in the quality and sharpness of Harry's blades. I'm getting less use per head then previously and they don't appear to be as sharp. Any recommendations?

Harry’s seems like a lot of marketing and not a lot of good shaves.

When traveling I use the Fusion ProGlide and SkinGuard. Both on the Fusion Power FlexBall handle. Best cartridge ever.

At home it’s all about the wet shavers. Use double/single edge safety razors, old school like your grandpa. They are very beneficial to skin and wallet. 100 blades, good for 3-5 shaves each, can cost around $15. When compared with cartridges, it's a no-brainer. Less convenient than cartridges, however, and can often lead to acquisition disorders involving hardware and/or soaps and creams.

I have spent a small fortune on various brands of single and double edge safety razors. Most in my arsenal are high quality precision whisker destruction weapons. I enjoy attacking the daily chore by using different razors. Without a doubt, the razor that I reach for the most is my Timeless.

I've had to shave virtually every day of my life since I was 18. What I found works best for me right now.

I use a safety razor I got from New York Shaving Company. For blades, I buy a pack of 100 Astra Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades for about $8 and it lasts me well over a year (I typically switch out blades every 3-5 shaves). I have a badger hair brush and use shaving soap from the pharmacy. Best shaves I've ever had.

    Using mach3. Best for me.

That said, recently I just use the hair clipper without the comb attachment. Get a light stubble which is fine for me.

Oh yes - I fell into that particular rabbit hole myself, but there is something satisfying about having a rotation of antique razors.

I bought a Weishi system and the Astra Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades. The Weishi holder was about $20 so not unreasonable. I tried it twice and it looked like I was attacked by a samurai. I cannot shave with it with confidence knowing I will come out alive

Try Dorco. They used to sell direct but now use Amazon as their storefront.

I use Life brand shaver heads from Shopper's Drug Mart in Canada. It lasts me over a year per head, only costs $11.99. Pretty good stuff.

Bro! Timeless Bronze is on my wish list. Currently my main is a vintage Tech ballend with Polsilver and Semogue boar, Sundays use Parker shavette w/Polsilver and also have my Bengall and Filarmonica straights for now and then shaves. Even got the girls using DE for their legs, Gloria has a Chinese butterfly that shaves pretty well and she likes Feathers,Amealia has a Tech copy and likes Nacets.

MWF, Proraso red are main rotations and Tallow and Steel "West Indies" occasionally. Only reason I have the T&S is I got it free from maker for some help I gave him a while back, MWF is mainly straight soap.

Hey there Pete. Cool to see some of the regulars here are also wet shavers. It's a way to take something that might be seen as a daily chore, and turn it into something that can be relaxing and enjoyable. It's also a fun hobby. So much information and knowledge to be had from something as simple as the process of shaving your face.

Yes, the bronze Timeless is a sweet looking razor. I have the polished stainless steel Timeless razor with the scalloped base plate, scalloped top plate, with the milder blade gap, and pineapple handle. Absolutely zero learning curve and fabulous shaves every time for me.

I primarily use personna and feather blades and badger brushes. I have a few vintage brushes that I have restored but no vintage razors. Never tried "straights". Those are the most beautiful razors.

The most enjoyable part of the hobby for me is using products from other countries.

I used to be in some of the Facebook shaving groups. Those can become serious time wasters, so I got away from them. Always thought the best Facebook group was the Aussie group "Shave the Man".

Bought some Mach3's for $2.25 a blade at Wal-Mart. Shave is as good as the Fusion. Harry's blades are mediocre. You get what you pay for. Their shaving cream isn't great either. I like Cremo for that.

DE shaving is not like a cartridge. Less pressure and need to take your time at the start and get a good soap and brush, not that kerosene in a can crap.

I used a DE from the first year I started shaving, then lost my old butterfly I had somehow,a Super adjustable. 109 I think it was. Then carts for years but always had a boar and stick soap. Then found Paste and Cut Aussie forum a couple of years back and one of the members there PIFed me a Ballend,Voskhods and Mondial soap.(Found some expensive Wilkie blades and threw the Voskhods away) Got me started again. I don't visit that forum anymore because of the APR dude and his questionable behaviour, gladly supported by the members and admins of the forum. Still go to B&B and others but do not participate often.

Love my straight shaves, best way to get focused. Need to when moving an extremely sharp piece of steel over ones face and throat.

If you use a more modern shave head you can still improve your shave by using shaving soap and a brush, it really sets you up for a nice shave. My son hasn't joined the dark side of DE shaving but he has gone from the 7 blade monstrosities that they want big bucks for to a simple handle and track ii blades with soap and a brush. He's getting good shaves now.

I use a Merkur 34C, Merkur travel razor, and a Fatip Grande. Israeli Red Persona's in the Merkur's, Voskhod in the Fatip, and Gillettes as a change of pace. I like Proraso products (green soap in summer), cella soap, and some others

There are 1000's of DE and straight shave tutorial videos on YouTube. Believe it or not there are video "celebrities" in the wet shaving world. Nick Shaves probably makes the best videos. RazorEmporium, mantic59, Anthony Esposito, GeoFatBoy, Lynn Abrams, and Michael Freeburg are all really good. Countless videos of shavers using virtually every razor, brush, soap, or cream product ever made.

I believe it about the "celebrities", I just wanted to wade through the BS and find out who puts out better content. Thank ya.

It takes some practice. Thumb and forefinger to hold the razor is what works for me the best without looking slashing myself up. I don't try to get all the beard at once either - reduce it the first time, re-lather, then get the rest. Once you get it down, it is the best shave you will ever have. Probably the closest I ever get to pampering myself.

Safety razors 100% nothing else comes close. I use proraso shaving cream and feather blades. Ive used disposable razors, replaceable blades and electric razors and none of them come anywhere close.

So! I went to the business where they make the Timeless razors. I met with one of the brothers who run the business. I met their Mother! Amazing artists with metal and a damn fine Family. They treated me so well. I bought the stainless steel razor with the aggressive cut. It's a piece of art, and I actually enjoy shaving now. Thanks for the advice!
