Anyone here ever bought an expensive watch?

Walking through the mall I passed by a watch store, they really caught my attention. They weren’t even fancy watches, a bunch of Nixon, AE, etc.

Went to macys and got a Citizen watch for $300, it really feels like its worth the price. I can tell the difference between this and a regular watch. In my head this was expensive.

Then I found more about watches and ran into Rolex, Alpina, Omega, etc and for some reason I really want one even though I can get a similar looking watch on amazon for $30. However the one I want is $5k (Omega Speedmaster). Even if I saved up for it, I feel like its too much money, and simply saving up isnt worthy of a purchase. It feels like I should achieve a milestone in my life first as it is a luxury and not a necessity... a time when I can say “I earned this”.

Any brahs out there who own these expensive watches, why did you purchase yours? Did you have a reason? An accomplishment ? A gift?
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

-I'd rather live life saying "I failed" than "I could have"

Best piece of advice is don't buy a 5k watch unless you're making big money.

Don't be that fuking guy wearing an expensive watch and driving a used BMW making less than 100k a year.

Parents gave me watches for milestones in my life. Citizen nighthawk for 21st bday. A Swiss for college graduation. Tag Heuer for 18th bday. And my dad left me his Rolex date just when he passed away. I cherish them all and will pass them down to my future kids one day. The Rolex obviously means the most to me and I get paranoid leaving it at the house when I’m away.

A watch is much more than a watch brah. But with more expensive brands, they tend to have great resale value if not increase in value but you have to know what you’re buying if you’re looking to resale someday for a profit

I have about 10 watches varying in value and its pretty overwhelming with what to wear but I love everyone and obviously bought it for a reason so its pretty hard to part ways with them.
Not a massive Rolex fan because of the stigma but they do hold value well and I would love a white gold prince date.
Loving the retro inspired watches over the last few years from Longines, Oris and Alpina.

bruh unless you like to jerk off over the history of horology why bother? unless you really see it as an achievement of "i earned this" - it's just expensive jewelry. if you want it to hold its value or go up you should probably get a rolex, and keep the paperwork/boxes etc.

you'll have to service it in the future which costs bucks too.

nothing wrong with treating yourself if you want to. but don't expect anyone to care. start a fund for your watch and save a few bucks each month, if you want one in the future pull the trigger
Subjecting yourself to self imposed discipline is the surest way to increase the quality of your existence

There’s a massive watch thread in the main Misc forum. Rolex etc are often picked up as partial investments or almost like stores of value for people who have money, so they’re not just wrist candy. The production of these watches is pretty tightly controlled and are constantly being bought into and traded by affluent people, so there’s that

Watches can be cool af though, between the engineering / complications and the amount of effort that can go into making and finishing the super high end pieces

    Casual: Timex Weekender x 2

    Field: Hamilton, Citizen

    Dress/formal: Tissot x 2

I'd like 1 "luxury" watch like that Omega. Otherwise I'm set. I wear my Fitbit 95% of the time anyway lol.

I have a ~$10k rolex datejust with gold. I honestly don't like wearing it because that's too much money to be carrying around on your wrist. I'm a huge Rolex fanboy though. However, Audemars Piguet is my dream watch. Another thing about high end watches is you have to get them serviced. I think it was around $500 to get my rolex cleaned and ****. They do make you feel like a million bucks when you're wearing them though.

Spent about $27.5k or so on these watches.

Their value right now is probably around $37k-40k.

Feel naked w/o a watch on. Have had so many great conversations with random people out about watches because they notice what I've got on, or vice versa. If you don't actually have an appreciation for watches in general, no real need for one though.

I think watches like that really only work for special events unless you're a businessman and need to show off in a suit all the time. I always liked the really light titanium watches for every day, they also seem to be at that price range where you are getting something really nice but it doesn't feel excessive or unnecessarily flashy when you are out and about.

Most expensive I have are a Fossil that I never wear (battery has been dead for like 2 years now) and G Shocks.
Don't care or see the reason to spend more. But different people appreciate different chit. To each their own.

Honestly most expensive watches IMO are ugly as fk (Rolex's, etc) and I wouldn't buy or wear one no matter how rich I was.
As far as buying them for purely investment reasons, are they actually better than just investing in gold or silver? I can't see how they would be. Seems like their value is nothing more than what someone is willing to pay at the time of selling. Whereas precious metals have a daily (albeit changing) value, period.

I have 6 watches. Not the uber expensive ones. 5 of them are about $2000-$2500 each when I bought them back when I was still working in the middle east.
The 6th one is $300 Galaxy Watch that I wear everyday lol. All the other 5 have been in my drawer for years now.

Nah they're not purely investments but the value side helps. They're cool, they're status symbols, AND you'll probably at least get your money back if you part ways with something like a Rolex.

Rolex in particular is in a really sweet spot where they're exclusive but not so prohibitively expensive that their market is limited. And these brands only produce so many watches per year, so you'll see people jumping through all kinds of hoops to secure in-demand models from their authorized dealers. If you get into the top end enthusiast brands like Patek and A. Lange & Sohne, I'm not sure those hold their value quite as well purely because far fewer people can afford them. Pateks probably hold their value decently because the name is so well known, but Rolex is the go-to for that type of chit.

And just to be clear, these things do have intrinsic value. The amount of labour required to produce watches like these can be absolutely insane, you're talking thousands of manhours spent finishing each little component
