My opinion on "starvation mode" is that you should forget you ever heard the term "starvation mode."

Starvation Mode is when you don’t eat.

It's a myth - usually caused by retained water during a harsh diet. So you don't lose scale weight even though underlying fat loss does continue.

Take a break and the water goes.

That's it. Any ideas you may have read about eating too little stopping you losing weight are bogus. Metabolisms do adapt up to down a little but not by enough to produce that kind of reaction. Maybe by a couple of hundred calories on your TDEE, that's all.

Lol @ suggesting that the body will not adapt to prolonged nutrient deprivation.

Look up Minnesota Starvation Experiment or Biosphere 2. In both cases there were profound effects that remained long after weight had returned to baseline. In other words, the body maintained adaptations despite refeeding the subjects all the way back to their pre-intervention weight.

There’s a reason that bears don’t emerge from hibernation with the same voracity they display in the summer. It takes some time to reverse the biological processes that have slowed things down in order to get metabolism revved back up.

Does this matter for you? Probably not, unless you have an eating disorder. Most people aren’t even capable of truly starving themselves.

Odd that Africa never seems to adapt to starvation mode? If it existed you would have thought they would have adapted by now.....

Images and stories that some may find upsetting included in the article.

The view of 'starvation mode' may need rethinking OP in terms of your body.
