Lightbulb Skinny fat body type bulking/cutting advice?

Long story short, I was skinny fat 5’6” 118lbs 12 months ago. I bulked for the past 12 months (gaining about 1lb per month) to 129lbs.

At 129lbs I started getting uncomfortable with the fat gains (coming from a skinny fat body). Problem areas are midsection, upper arm, and face.

Anyway, I set up my calories to a really small deficit (100 cals) so I can lose about 1lb per month

My question is until what weight should I cut to? Should I cut all the way back to 118 or should I stop at like 122lb?

(Sorry I should mention that I have been following bret contreras program and getting stronger on my lifts. I also have gained muscle in my legs, butt, and arms.)

It's a matter of personal preference. Look in the mirror as you cut and when you get to an amount of body fat that you're comfortable with, you can stop - whether it be 118lb, 122lb or something else. Regardless, it sounds like your body composition will be diff this time around when you get down to that weight which is a good thing.

IMO - If you bulked at only 1lb/month, you prob could do it more efficiently where it's mostly muscle and you see minimal fat gains, so next time around if you bulk again maybe adjust your cal surplus and workout routine.

Thank you for the advice! I only lowered my calorie intake 2 weeks ago and I already see a lot of “bloating” gone from my belly so maybe a lot of the “fat” I was seeing was water weight.

What do you mean with a more efficient bulk? Do you think I was gaining weight too fast and I should do a slower bulk?

No, I meant your weight gain rate of 1lb/month is perfect for a lean bulk, meaning you can potentially put on mostly lean muscle and shouldn't see much visible fat gains. So if you saw a decent amount of fat gains in mid-section, upper arm and face in last bulk, you could prob make some adjustments next time around so that doesn't happen again.

Of course, if it turns out to be just water weight / bloating, then it's a diff story.
