Tacoma rental, now I want a truck.

Currently drive a 06 civic with 200k miles. Now the financially smart option is to wait until it explodes right, then buy another vehicle. Or I could trade it/sell it now and put that money towards a used truck.

Definitely not buying or leasing a brand new truck.
Definitely want to spend under 20k for it.
Definitely want at least 1.5 cabin.

    Want something aesthetic.

    Don't want a s10 or Mazda truck

According to research, the 2006 Silverado is the way to go, but I really like how Tacomas look. If they made a ram or f150 that wasn't the size of a mobile home I would definitely be more interested. Same with the tundra.

What y'all think? I don't work construction or trade.

So you're looking at a full size Silverado, but think the F150, Ram, and Tundras are too big?

You can definitely get an F150 without a huge amount of miles, upper trim level, for less than $20k. I assume you can do the same with the other makes as well. I'm an F150 guy, so that's what I would vote, but you cannot go wrong with a pickup from the big 3, or a Toyota... especially since it's probably just going to be a pavement princess (nothing wrong with that). Just take a weekend to test drive all of them and see what you like best.

The bed on the half cab 06 Silverado looks to be in equal length of the combined cabin. Just saw a f150 with a baby crib size of a bed, it just looks ridiculous and probably inefficient In use too. Same goes with this Tacoma too, wanted to put a tv length wise in the back and it didn't fit, nor did it fit inside.

You can get a very used Tacoma for under 20k...they're bulletproof so even one with 150k miles will last you another 100k.

Just bought a 2020 taco 4x4 for 35k...it's a sweet ****in truck. The manual trans is geared a little low though.

    this

i spent just a lil more and got a 2014 baja series with 60k miles. plan to drive this thing into the ground, replace the engine with the same, maybe throw on a supercharger at some point but for now i'm very happy with it.

came from a 2017 WRX, but after doing a road trip in my buddy's adventure van, i really liked being high up.
"So there I am sitting in the waiting area of the hair salon with my niece and Keanu Reeves walks in. I was nervous as ****, but too scared to say anything to him. Then my niece started crying, and I’m trying to quiet her down because I don't want to bother him. Pretty soon he walks over and asks what's wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry. He put down his magazine, picked up my niece, and lifted up his shirt, and breastfed her right there in the salon. Chill guy, really nice about it."

If you want something trouble free, in my opinion, a Tundra is the only ticket! Old or new, it's the best bang for your buck as for as trucks go.

I have several vehicles, but I just purchase a 2020 TRD PRO!

1st Gen Tundra before a Tacoma. About the size of current midsize trucks, better than Tacoma in just about every way, and don't have to pay the Tacoma tax.

Ford just brought the Ranger back to the USA so its unlikely you can get one new. But they are pretty nice. GMC Canyon/ Chevolet Colorado are also in that same size range. You can get them used for a decent price.

Tacoma's are reliable and hold their value well but have out-dated tech. 2015 Gen Tacos are some of the most reliable if you go used.

For the price I think a lightly used Colorado/Canyon might be a good option. If going new, I'd go with a Ranger. The Taco would be the vehicle of choice if you want to really customize it for off-road/over-land.

Any of them will look good with 33-35" tires, a 2-4" lift and rims. Even if you don't go hardcore off roading. It'll dress up the truck and make it more enjoyable to drive. (Sitting higher, better visibility, etc.)

A truck is the most versatile vehicle there is if you are into the outdoors. If you like hunting, fishing, mountain-biking, Kayaking/Canoein or camping. Want to pull a boat or Jet Ski's. A utility trailer with a side-by-side, ATV, dirt bikes, etc.

There are just a ton of activities you're excluded from doing if you don't own a truck. I haven't hung out with a guy that doesn't have a truck or Jeep in about 10 years. Kinda hard to include car only guys in outdoor activities.

theyre not really aesthetic unless you put a little lift and tires on them but you should check out nissan frontier. you can get them more loaded than a tacoma and theyre 8-10k cheaper than a tacoma

If the Tacoma swayed you into a truck, just get a Tacoma. Save up more and just be patient and search every day until you find the right one.
Yes... come and let us make an end of it. It matters not, even cornered, to my last breath... I remain who and what I am. I will not hide, nor tremble, nor beg. Let them come and reckon with fury that is DOOM defiant.

Key phrase here is "if you are into the outdoors". And even then you are only using your truck a few times a year, unless you're like a homelesscel with no job.

What I would do is this, Id buy me a very cheap, used, beat up truck for its trucking capabilities. And then I would have a regular luxury sedan as a daily. You wouldn't want to drop 10-20-40k on a truck and use it only a couple of times a year and then drive a mediocre daily sedan. THAT is the smart way to use your money.

I recently bought a Tacoma 2016 used and like it a lot. If you want one I'd suggest saving up a bit more, try to find a good deal on financing and then look for a V6 crew cab 4wd with lower mileage. That way if you don't like it or it becomes too much for you the option to sell it is always there.

OP has a beater Civic. Drove the Tacoma and loved it. Wants truck. Under 20k. '06 Silverado is what he can afford.

Sounds like a decision you will regret. I would not buy a GM truck.

Unfortunately Tacos hold their value like few other vehicles in the US market.

Sure, but they couldn't have done a little better? Even a Jeep Wrangler felt much, much nicer inside. The 4runner was almost a nightmare tech-wise, piss poor.

Drove a couple Tacoma’s before buying my 18 Frontier Pro4x and preferred the seating position, torque and fully boxed frame on the Nissan. Much more affordable as well and recently ranked number 2 in reliability behind only the tundra.
Been a very solid truck and taken me all over TX, New Mexico and Colorado.

I’ve owned a ton of GMs as well but it’s hard to swallow spending big bucks on a truck that’s 10+ years old with 150k+ miles.

GOAT Truck, the Xterra & Frontier hold their resale values pretty well and are rugged to do what Rubicons can do with a better ride.

I previously owned an FJ on 35s and the Frontier has really impressed me what it’s been able to traverse on 33s.

I had a Nissan Navara for a short time, which looks to be the same thing as that

I loved it so much I ditched it after three months and went back to a Mercedes sedan

    Ps looking thick solid tight
They make the Tacoma with a 6' bed with a double cab in certain trims, the Off-Road for sure, and I can't remember if its the Sport or SR5. the 6' bed makes it about as long as a crew cab full-sized pickup though so it will hurt maneuverability on trails and be more of a pain in large cities finding parking or dealing with narrow streets.

06 Silverado would be the way to go, that’s the last year of that generation and they are known to be very durable with them commonly going past 200k with the original engine and transmission. I’ve seen quite a few with around 300k. I have a 05 z71 Silverado with 180k and I would be shocked if I didn’t make it past 250k. I take this truck every winter on multiple 1000+ mile trips towing over 5k lbs to the middle of nowhere and I’m the only one as far as the eye can see. It also commonly gets -30 while I’m there for the lows. I literally trust this truck with my life. Its been a great truck and the engine still feels like it did when it was new. You could pick up one with low mileage for around 10k. Which is another reason I like it, it’s not my daily and not worth that much so I don’t care when it gets scratched. I had a 75k truck and barely wanted to use it like a truck. But with any vehicle, how it was maintained and treated during its life is the most important aspect
