    Question Swimming question

Hey I wanted to know if anyone had any exercises that would be a close to swimming as possible. I signed up for a sprint triathlon and unfortunately my gym doesn’t have a pool. The race is in June and for a months I wanted to train as close as I could to swimming before having to pay another gym just to use their pool. Any help would be really appreciated.

Short of laying on a bench and pretending to swim, no...

I'm almost positive that the only way to get better at swimming is to swim. It's incredibly taxing, and my experience has been that regardless of fitness level, you will be terrible at swimming if you don't swim consistently.

Dont register for triathlons without having access to a pool for training.

Look for county pools/aquatic centers in your zip code (assuming USA). It's usually $2-3 per day for adult, @$30 a month or @$70 for 3 months. And the pools are Olympic size and only lap swimmers in the lap swimming pool. Most gym pools are 2-3 lane junior Olympic filled with non-swimmers being in the way. When I lived in NorCal, my gym had a 6 lane outdoor J-Olympic pool, a second farting around pool for non-swimmers and a kiddie pool as well as life guard that will kick non-swimmers out of the lap swim pool. My current gyms have a crappy 2 lane indoor pool and it's so not fun swimming in that, not to mention always someone in the way and not just saying slower swimmers, people that think the lap pool is a horsing around splash water at each other pool. It is hit, usually miss to be able to get a good swim workout in, they should not be allowed to advertise they have a "lap pool".

Anyway, you will not get much better at swimming without actually swimming. It's a lot of technique and timing for when you do arms, when you do legs when you breathe.

edit: Can also sign up for swimming class in a Junior college if you have one close and that comes with a coach.

There’s a lot of technique involved with swimming and the only way to be efficient in the water is to actually train in the water. Not to mention if your tri is in open water, I can’t imagine just doing land exercises and then jumping in a lake or ocean.

Definitely try and find a pool. Good luck on your triathlon!

    Agreed...find a pool!

That said, I was on the swim team for many years, and what the coaches had us focus on was triceps and lats. Any kind of lat or triceps pulldown will help your swimming strength.

You really have to find a pool though...like 90% of it is getting your breathing rhythm down. For anything longer than 100meters, I feel like it's incredibly tiring to not have a steady breathing rhythm.

Cardio exercises have a very poor cross-over, even treadmill has poor cross over to running. Trying to mimic swimming with anything else just aint happening bro.
