Not feeling divinity original sin 2 that much...

Does it take awhile to figure out and get into? Ive barely started it, but feel overwhelmed already. Not used to this type of rpg too, never played baldurs gate. I loved Witcher 3, Final Fantasy games etc. should I watch some youtube videos on the basics or something. I'm only like a couple hours into it lol, so these just first impressions.

Not at all like Witcher 3 or Final Fantasy games. It's a great RPG though. Just takes some getting used to.

I bought nr 1 & 2, really wanted to like it. gave it a few chances but could never get into it for some reason. Not really a fan of the fantasy setting and it is kind of hard to get into when youre used to quest markers and all that stuff from modern games. Probably gonna revisit it again some day because I can see it has a lot of potential and people love it. I wish somebody made a game like this but in a modern/sci fi setting.

What helped me was assigning archtypes to each of my characters and building a balanced team around that. No shame in adjusting the difficulty or using the built-in mods along the way. Take your time.

I'll just add that you should have a character that's high in Thievery because stealing helps you so much through the early game. The item scaling in the game is kinda retarded and forces you to buy all the time.

It's nothing like baldurs gate, or final fantasy, or the witcher. It's a turned base strategy RPG. Think Xcom but it has an open world. Honestly one of my top games, definitely gotta play it with friends. Nothing like accidentally blowing your buddy up and engulfing them in cursed fire etc.

It's a very different RPG than those. it's more DnD based. It's FAR more sandbox than modern MMO's.

It throws a lot at you all at once. Stick with it until ACT 2 and if you still aren't feeling it, eject.

Figuring out what stats to bump up etc can be confusing. Combat is confusing at first too. But it quickly goes from "This is way too hard" to "This is so fuking easy" really quick once you get it.

Currently doing a lonewolf playthrough as an Undead with Fane as my companion, both of us going full wizard mode. Undead casters feel OP as fuk when they get a ton of poison AoE's and can heal themselves while chitting on everything around them.

It is the kind of game that is very punishing if you don't pay attention. The very first area - I spent a few hours there. I actually took notes on a notepad near my PC for points of interest and so on and I explored very thoroughly. You get - even from simple encounters - things that enable new abilities and those abilities mean you can do x, y and z and access parts you didn't think you could.

I liked the game a lot. Sebille crew, hnnnngh.

What? I mean, ok, it's a story driven rpg. Thus, all RPG's are like all other RPG's. Combat, loot, spells etc systems aren't even close.

I mean the main differences between D:OSII and BG is the combat. The turn-based style (which can be replicated with pausing), environment effects, and access to all spells. The rest of the game is very similar. Story driven, isometric, control multiple characters, etc. They are a good comparison as long as you acknowledge the differences. Now compared to the other games, yeah, vastly different.

And yes, play with friends! Then do it again with mods!

Not an MMO. The learning curve is just a pita for someone who hasn't played an iRPG before. The main thing to figure out is the ridiculous amount of things you can do with the environment and the synergies between spells/abilities. Those same synergies make certain class combos massively OP.

Not an MMO. The learning curve is just a pita for someone who hasn't played an iRPG before. The main thing to figure out is the ridiculous amount of things you can do with the environment and the synergies between spells/abilities. Those same synergies make certain class combos massively OP.
I don't even understand how you could play this game with friends. I dont know anyone that plays it and it seems so complex with so many menus etc... what would my friends do while im going through all my inventory, spells etc.. Diablo 3 with friends seems a lot easier, but everyone keeps saying co op is good

There's a massive learning curve and even I was ready to drop it off until I started watching a Lets Play of teh game to understand what was going on. I must have watched like 30 videos of Cohhcarnage playing it to understand it, and watching him play, the game finally clicked and started my playthrough and finished the game.

Watch Cohh's initial Dvinity 2 run to understand how the game and its mechanics work. It's an absolute masterpiece of gaming and one of the best rpg games of the decade OP, dont drop it.

I feel like it was a bit of a trial to "get" what worked and what didn't, but not THAT hard. If you ever played games with turn-based combat or even just with cooldown-based actions you can wrap your head around it pretty quick.

They control their own characters and can play independently of you. That's one the great complexities of this game. For instance, have one character distract merchants/npcs, then another can steal/pickpocket.

As someone else said, you aren't linked. Your friend can do.. wahtever they want in that time. They can go complete one of your groups quests, go fight something, etc. You guys don't even have to be in the same area.

My current Tactition play through I'm just using a Aero/Geo Undead with a Pyro/Hydro Fane. I'm in act 3 and the fights aren't even a challenge at this point unless I goof hard. Most things are lucky to even get close enough to hit my guys before being CC'd/obliterated one way or another. All the Geo AE poison spells heal me while damaging enemies.. and if I need a little more healing I just pop a resistance potion and go over 100% to heal from my own Aero or Pyro AE's. It sick. It piss.

Protip: Teleport is like lowkey one of the most useful abilities in the game, in and out of combat.

Everyone has to deal with inventory management etc, I am playing through it with my GF. I tried to get her into WOW classic with me but grinding for hours on end isn't the same as it was when I was 20.

With Divinity you can sit down for a few hours and have a real RPG experience. As you play through it, don't rush yourself. The game is more or less a DnD simulator.

Everything takes time, from trips to town to scouting new areas to setting up for fights. The experience is actually more fun when you are playing with someone else so you are forced to try and work together somewhat.

Not at all. I'm talking Baldurs Gate, the party-based, story driven, RTwP cRPG based on the ADnD 2nd edition ruleset.

The turned based combat, the character progression, the way skills/magic, CC and environmental interaction works in DOS1/2 is so far off from Baldurs Gate that the only similarities they share are that they are both high fantasy RPG's with a storyline about gods or whatever, which makes them like most other RPG's too.

I'll happily concede that Pillars of Eternity and Baldurs Gate share enough similarities that you can transition pretty easily into PoE and feel mostly comfortable with how all of the base game mechanics work if you are familiar with the BG/IWD series. The reasons I mentioned above are just too vastly different to say Baldurs Gate is like DOS.

I began to type out a pretty lengthy reply going into the weeds, but to what end? I suppose agree to disagree.

That's what I'm saying, the differences are so impactful that they can't be compared. Are you suggesting that Warcraft 3 and something like Endless Legend (think fantasy civ) are comparable? They are fantasy games where you control units, manage resources and wage war on other armies. But that's a tad reductive isn't it? That's how I feel about DOS and BG.

To be clear, I love BG and I love DOS2. They are all up there in my top RPG's of all times. I just feel like the core mechanics are apples and oranges and somebody coming from BG or even the more recent Pillars of Eternity are going to be in for a massive learning curve if they bought it because they heard it was like Baldurs Gate.
