Personally I would just cut the 3V Mustang and 300 right the fk off my list...

As far as the 3000GT goes , it could be a fun car just for nostalgia reasons but expect it to leak oil and break a lot... because JDM

E30...Just lol.. again can be cool in certain aspects but any BMW.. especially older ones... make sure you have a stack of cash set back for repairs

Again these are just my opinions based on my experiences..

I have seen some Gen 1 5.0 Mustangs going for 11-12k these days.. granted they will have some mileage I am sure but the 5.0's are proving to be pretty tough in the longevity game as long as you dont boost them to the fkn moon..

A lot of F body's can be had in that price range that are still pretty clean and well kept.. and who doesn't like a stout LS1

$10k budget is legit beater status. Why not buy a fun toy like a bike, an ATV, or something like that instead? Then you are close to top of the line with that money instead of a money pit.

Cars like this are very personal, so it's going to be whatever you feel a connection with.

Personally, JUST off that list as given, I would go with the 05-09 Mustang. I had one as a daily driver back in the day and it was ok. I still like the looks, but the 4.6L was really "meh".

The 5.0L Coyote is definitely better, but they didn't come in the Mustang until 2010, along with a facelift of the car. I had two 98 Trans Am's with LS1's (1 modded and 1 fairly stock) before the Mustang and the LS1 was just a much better motor than the 4.6L. Even though my 2005 Mustang was 7 years newer, it felt like a step backwards.

If you are open to other options from roughly the same era and price, I'd look at the LS Trans Am's and Camaros or even a C5 Corvette (I saw a few under and around $10k months ago when looking around). You could also consider older cars and do an LS or Coyote swap, but that will not be as cheap, obviously.

I found f body to be way more expensive. I will re-look.

I really want a 318is. I've found a couple looking real clean but as you said, afraid of ownership costs.

Given your current list and price range, whatever you buy will be garaged being broken down. Tomato / tamatoe, pick your poison.

Like posted earlier, the correct answer is LS Camaro / TA, or change your type of fun and get a bike or Jeep / Tacoma.

Mustangs are good cars, well-built imo and tons of them so cheap parts. I've owned a few and they were the most reliable cars i've owned. You get the intoxicating sound of the v8 that doesn't get old. They're a bit heavy and big though especially compared to most others in the category.

LS1 F body > anything on that list

The 2 cars on that list I would consider are the 300 and the 3000gt, they'd have to be turbo. Unfortunately those dont have the best reputation unless you have the money to support them.

One challenge with buying just about any older "fun" car is that the previous owner(s) may have beat the chit out of it having their own fun.

i had a 05 mustang when they came out. the 3v isnt a bad engine. I ran a 12.71@109mph with basic bolt ons and drag radials. that is fast enough to be exciting. they make competitive track and and autocross cars as well. Huge aftermarket means you can do anything you want with them. I think they are the best looking body style as well until you get to the new GT350. Plus they are dead ass reliable and very cheap to buy.
i really like 3000gt and stealths but i have heard they are a nightmare of issues.
A friend of mine had a 300zx NA when we were in high school. Even though it was a bit slow it was a ton of fun to drive and seemed really well built. if you could find a low mileage turbo i think id go with that.

I had a Z around that time when they were still somewhat new and they are not any better than 3000GTs and Stealths reliability wise, all were major pita cars to keep on the road and from my experience the Z was one of the worst cars to work on, just look up an engine pic. Miss that car though, may she RIP

For under 10k I would start looking into JDM imports to see what your money can get you. I’d personally do a Sunny GtiR (awd/ 2.0L-T), the list you provided is incredibly weak. Id either grow the budget or forget it all together

i really like 3000gt and stealths but i have heard they are a nightmare of issues.
A friend of mine had a 300zx NA when we were in high school. Even though it was a bit slow it was a ton of fun to drive and seemed really well built. if you could find a low mileage turbo i think id go with that.
I legit had the same friend. Ended up putting a Stilen kit on his before he got rid of. Good times for sure

    -2005 Mustang GT. $6-$7k
-Tires, plugs & wires, brake pads, rotors, oil change, here and there's that a 100k+ mile car needs -$1000
-Suspension upgrades. Coilovers & drop it about 1"... on the higher end of budget, fatter sway bars/bushings/end links, etc. $700-$1000
-Intake, exhaust, tune, clutch, short throw -$1500

Boom, fun weekend car. You're not going to blow anybody's doors off and you're not going to set any track records, but it will be a fun little car to play around it, make loud noises, slide around/whatever..... and be pretty reliable with a great aftermarket if you choose to up your budget.

at 10k you should really be looking at an accord or similar, the 318is is going to be way slower than even a 10 year old accord so you're not missing out on 'fun' there

    Under 10K? Check
    German? Check
    Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach? Check
    470HP supercharged v8? Check
More baller than a 3 series BMW for same money? Check.
Less gay than a Honda Accord/Toyota Camry for same money? Check
    Sounds awesome with exhaust? Check

    check check check check

Other than that Mustang or 350z. E30 - while a great chassis - is not a very satisfying car to drive, IMO of course.

Only if you got spare money to spend or know how to work on those yourself. A cheap E46 M3 can be very expensive.

if you're getting a 13+ year old car, have at-least 2k to replace all the rubber components on the suspension.

    This.

Not sure why people don't consider this more often.

It's a 2 door RWD sports car with a reliable V8. 1000 bucks and you can get another 75rwhp. And still get 25MPG and a wicked sound track. And look good doing it.

If you can spend a bit more, find an FRC. You're golden.

Something that you will enjoy driving? The corvette dude. Why not a 2 seater? You carrying kids brah??

IF you get a corvette, you could keep that 2-3k for repairs in the bank. Because there won't be any i'm sure. Corvettes are reliable. Maintenance probably. Oil, plugs and that's pretty much it.

you really think a 20 year old sports car wont need any repairs?

guarantee shocks will be bad, torn bushings, bearings, ball joints, power steering rack, etc.

doesn't matter how reliable a power train is, the rest of the car wont last forever, and chit has to be replaced
