Can protein powder supplement in this case?

    Hey everyone,

I've attempted to start putting on some pounds. So I've been eating more and working out more consistently and I've already seen a little difference in about a month. Problem is, I'm having to force myself to eat even when I'm not hungry. Not to a nauseating level, but extra small meals which are actually kind of boring. I'm also having to go number 2 more often. My question is, is this an ideal situation where I can skip the extra meals and just drink protein powder?

I used to take it when I was going to the gym more frequently, but I never drank more than one of those little cups a day. I was recently working with someone who drinks 3 of them a day. I thought that was unhealthy.

Anyway, can skip the extra food and just supplement with protein powder? Is 3 of those little cups a day too much?

Why do you believe you need to eat extra small meals? You don't.

I didn't mean "extra small" as in the meals themselves are small. I just meant that I'm eating more, such as throwing in a sandwich between meals. I do this in order to gain weight. I lose weight very easily, simply by not actively trying to eat enough I lose weight.

Don't expect results in such short timescales. If you are gaining about 2lbs a MONTH then you are doing fine.

If you have a small appetite you may need to count calories to remain consistent. As long as you are getting your essential nutrients (which is easy when eating at a surplus), it really doesn't matter when you eat, how large the meals are or what you choose to boost your basic wholefood diet with. What matters is the daily totals.

Drink milk, eat nuts or trail mix for snacks. Yes, you can have protein shakes - maybe throw some oatmeal in or peanut butter in. There are so many different ways to get more calories.

Just eat high calorie low volume foods to get you through it easier. ie) Fattier cuts of meat, full fat dairy, nuts, tablespoons of olive oil in salads (or even a daily shot of it), cooking more with oil, etc. IME, a protein shake will fill you up considerably more than a handful of almonds so if you are meeting your minimum protein requirements already (0.7g protein/lb), I would make up the extra calories from fat or even carbs. Protein is the most satiating so I wouldn't recommend you take extra to put you in a surplus. 1g fat = 9 cal, 1g protein/carbs=4cal....this is why I am suggesting you eat more fat. If you have a significant amount of weight to gain, I would also keep an eye on your cholesterol levels if you choose the fattier meat and full fat dairy route.

Thanks for the input so far. I kind of do have a diet similar to that already. I eat whole fat yogurt with cereal at least once a day, eggs and bacon for breakfast and a high protein/carb lunch. I've only incorporated the carbs because I'm trying to gain some weight. Otherwise I'm pretty health conscious. I don't use sugar and I rarely eat sweets. I think I just have a fast metabolism. Granted I used to be almost 90kg when I was going to the gym hardcore and eating a lot. Now if I don't make a conscious effort to eat a lot I seem to lose weight without even trying. I thought of protein shakes because I used to drink them. They never gave me the sensation of being full; they just tasted like chocolate shakes.

About 6 foot or 183 cm if I'm not mistaken. I weigh about 80kg right now.

    Do you have a picture?

You could use protein shakes to reach your calorie goal but there are much easier and cheaper ways. For example a bowl of cereal with honey can be an easy 500 kcal.

what do you think are the cheapest protein sources? and cereal is good for carbs but I think OP is referring more so towards hitting his protein/fat macros with shakes

I doubt he needs more protein to be honest. I think OP is bulking so all he needs is 0.7 gram protein per lb. Protein is generally the most satiating nutrient so I don't recommend adding protein shakes.

But given that he weighs 80 kg he may not be in a position to be bulking, which is why I asked him for a picture, but he has not replied to that.

Here are a couple pics. I'm assuming you meant shirtless torso to see body fat and build?

Well you're lean enough to bulk.

You said: "I'm having to force myself to eat even when I'm not hungry" but this should never be the case. Why you feel this way could have several reasons:

    - you might be striving for too high protein intake (you only need 128 gram)
    - you're eating too clean ('clean' foods will generally make people feel fuller)
    - you're eating too much fiber
    - your surplus is too large
    - you believe you need to eat more often than 3 times per day
    - you're eating too little fat

Cool I'm gonna have to look into these one by one, and maybe starting counting my calories as well. By the way, when you want to become more ripped is that cardio+cutting fats or cardio+cutting carbs? Perhaps I'm way off to begin with. I know that shouldn't be too much of a concern when you're trying to put on weight, but I ask for the future as well since I always had trouble being trim (without flab).

the only thing that will make you lose fat is a calorie deficit. Read this please: https://igoodies.000webhostapp.com/?viagra=showt...3439001&page=1

Cardio is good for health but not necessary for fat loss.

Trying to gain mass and becoming ripped at the same time is probably not a good idea for you. Better bulk slowly: gain 1-2 pounds per month.
