    Chris Jericho as 'the Man'

Jericho bounced around the mid-card and upper card in WWF/WWE for the most part. Yes, he was the first to unify the titles, but his reign was short, he was kind of Stephanie's henchman and quickly lost the title to HHH in a (typically HHH) one-sided feud. He would bounce around the upper midcard, holding the IC title 10,000 or so times, and sometimes working with top guys, but there was never really a time where he was "the guy", especially in the John Cena Era (where nobody was going to be the face of the company over Cena) - almost...

... in 2008 there was a brief period when Cena was injured and Jericho won the title right after a Feud of the Year with HBK, and for a couple months he kind of was all over and treated like the main guy. This was one of Jericho's first really huge re-inventions of himself, adopting the self-righteous suit wearing cold gimmick where he wouldn't drop his popular catch phrases. I really enjoyed this work and was really disappointed that when Cena came back, not that they refocused on John (you know, whatever) but they did it in such an unceremonious and predictable way. Cena barely even cut any promos against him, Jericho had to basically work by himself leading up to the match, Jericho lost the first one, no real rematch, no long feud or chase, they just immediately got rid of him and relegated him back to the midcard (where he'd eventually form a great tag team with the very stale Big Show, which would eventually whimper and die thanks to DX steamrolling over them).

I'd always been a Jericho fan and thought he was very entertaining. It kind of irked me they wouldn't really give him the chance to sink or swim here, iirc ratings actually bumped up during his time headlining the shows, I felt like he would never really be given a chance to run with the ball with them, no matter how entertaining it might be (I think a face Cena chasing a heel Jericho champ in 2008 for several months before Cena won would have been a great story).

Looks like we're finally getting this in AEW and while it's only been 3 weeks, I think as a top-level heel he's been outstanding, even if he's not in the same condition as he was 11 years back.

Chris Jericho's WWE career was awesome and I think he will definitely come back some time for a match (obviously he will come back when he is inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame).

His ability to reinvent himself over the course of his 30 year career has literally been second to none.
His promo skills are still 10/10 and he can still tell a story in the ring even though the explosiveness is gone and he has a beer gut.
Still very believable as a star/top guy in today’s climate where he’s mogging 70% of the pro wrestlers out there.

Aew seems to be a little old school so it’s looking like face Cody in the dusty spot chasing heel Jericho in the flair spot will go on for some time which I think is great.
It’s gonna be a very cool moment when Cody beats him to win his first world heavyweight championship.

My only problem with him, and it's not him, is the fans still cheering and giving him positive chants when he is one of the biggest heels in wrestling.

He's cutting a heel promo and the fans are chanting, "thank you Jericho" and cheering when he calls them out. It's mark city and and just stupid. For the most part AEW crowds have been great, ie. loud and get into matches, but the sheer number of neckbeard marks is ridiculous. Kayfabe is 100% dead sure, but just go with it for a couple hours and cheer the good guys and boo the bad guys, stop being such loser marks.

Yeah, fans are a little too smart for their own good, but I watch with my kids who don't know better and lovably despise the heels and cheer the faces, which is refreshing to be around.

I think, when push comes to shove, the fans will fall in line. Like, when Haggar ran out and cut off Darby at the end of the match, people were legit pissed off and Boo'd the fuk out of it like they were supposed to do, nobody cheered them for 'being good heels' in the moment. They'll applaud him during some promo but the moment they take action to beat someone down or cheat, I think even the AEW fans will do the right thing.

On an earlier note, I'd mentioned how Jericho was the first unified champ but they didn't give him any respect (same thing they did with Benoit, having Bischoff kiss ass to HHH and ask Benoit, the champion, to get him coffee). He actually talks about it a little here, mentioning he was the champ in name only. Truth.

Jericho had a great WWF/WWE run but they never gave him the same kind of respect that larger guys had. Kind of the same thing with Angle, who was a comedy act for most of his WWF inring career. I wonder who thought these young, more talented, smaller guys, who could cut much better promos and were more entertaining than, was holding them both back?

I remember being pleasantly surprised by how big of a push Y2J got in WWE. He made his name in WCW in spite of getting no help from the company. He made it impossible for WCW to not feature him by winning over the fans.

WWE really hyped up Y2J's coming into the company.

despite what he did in the early 2000's he wasnt anything special for me. it wasnt till 2008 when he had that 5 star matrch with shawn michaels that i realized something special about him.

then he goes to NJPW and has another 5 star match with Kenny Omega and i realize that he is legit one of the GOATs.

right now as AEW champ hes the most entertaining champ ive seen in almost 2 decades. his in ring is back to being bleh but his promos are on a whole other level.

You know I have always disliked Vinny Mac for several things. However, I hated him for 2 reasons. 1. Cody deserved the IC title the weekend his dad died. Dusty, did more for NXT development than any single person in FCW or NXT ever. One of the most loved legends ever, in any territory in any time. If you don't agree then screw you. You don't know real wrestling. 2) HHH and Sting had an amazing match of power going until the Shawn Michaels help became DX v NWO. OMG, I actually quit watching it when that happened. I knew the outcome. Stupid. In no universe, no wrestling match = HHH beating Sting. Unless it is WWE Mc Mahon writing. If you disagree, screw you - you don't know real wrestling.

Back on point with Jericho. This guy was good enough to write his own ticket. He is fantastic. He really put Darby Allin over in the match this past Tuesday. I mean really, the guy has been around forever. He is "The guy to beat" so to speak. WWE is the biggest "Boys club" I.e. take care of your pals and no one else gets over situation I have ever seen. WWE puts on a great product yes. But AEW is Nitro 2.0 imo. They are doing a good job, I am hoping they continue to do so.

I agree. Seems the AEW is trying to create their own version of the NWO which is a great idea in my opinion.

Khan owns it, Cody is just an executive there. He might have some ownership, but probably only a couple points.

We'll see, I was listening to Cornette who had some good points about AEW rushing things, he'd have taken Darby Allin slowly building him up over months, then having the match he had with Jericho. Technically, he was right of course but I don't know if he was looking at the bigger picture... AEW is in a war whether they wanted it or not, they need to get guys over quickly and can ill afford to put on slow burn stories right now when most of their roster is unknown to the mainstream audience they need to reach eventually.

So, with Cody, he comes off as the biggest babyface in the company by far right now. His match with Guevarra was great, he's looked solid in his packages and the runins he's been in. If there is anyone deserving to be the champion, besides Jericho, it's probably him or Omega. So, if he does win in November, that makes sense. Personally, I think they should draw this out for quite a long time to really make it a moment when he's able to win (if they even go there).

One thing with AEW, they've got some good old school booking moments but the matches themselves could use a Pat Patterson type to nail the endings. A lot of times they have guys kicking out when it should end the match, and the guy ends up losing anyway later, but they lose that perfect moment -- like with the Cody/Guevarra match, the moment to end to match was when Cody hit that big move after Brandi nailed him from the outside with a shoe as payback. The place would have exploded if that had ended things and Sammi would have looked fine (no worse than losing later cleanly to a small package)

... so while they are doing some things right, which in my opinion would be making Cody chase for awhile, in some areas they're missing it. So they might hotshot his victory too early.

I'm with you guys, AEW has been fantastic so far (from what I have seen). And Jericho as champ is PERFECT right now. No matter how long he holds the title, just having him hold it while they launched on cable TV was an excellent idea. They are doing a lot of things right so far, that is for sure.

Makes me wish WWE/WWF didn't always relegate him to a lesser comedy-style gimmick, they did the same thing to Kurt Angle, always put him in programs and such but because both guys had a good sense of humor, they decided to relegate their characters to being jokes.

Jericho was also one of those guys who could instantly regain heat, which I think they abused, having him generally just put over people.

I really wish they'd given him a chance to be a true main eventer top level guy in 2009 or whenever it was after his FoTY feud with Shawn Michaels. I'd like to seen a more serious character who, despite being a chickenchit heel, was actually a force to contend with and not just an obvious place holder while Cena healed up.

Yup. New company, how do you get your main title the respect it deserves and build it up to the prestige it needs, put it on the best promo in the business with legit star power.

Jericho won't be it because of his age, but AEW needs to find their own Okada. A younger guy who can hold the belt for just forever but who can put on 5 star after 5 star match and essentially becomes synonymous with the belt. You got to walk the line though with making your champ look good and have a long reign (Okada) and just simply having him win no matter what (Cena wins LOL). By having a long champ like this also gives the guy who finally upsets him a huge boost/it's actually a big deal. When Omega finally beat Okada after 18 months it was huge.
