    Woody's Quest for the Seven

New journal for the next chapter.

    My goal:

To complete the Seven Summits Challenge and stand on top of the highest peak on each continent of the world.

    1- Kilimanjaro (Africa)
    2- Mt Elbrus (Europe)
    3- Aconcagua (South America)
    4- Carstenz Pyramid (Oceania)
    5- Mt Vinson (Antarctica)
    6- Mt Denali (North America)
    7- Mt Everest (Asia)

This will not be a typical training journal, nor will this be accomplished in record time. I intend to train for 14+ months and begin in winter of 2021. By summiting one peak per year, I can finish before I turn 50.

Training workouts may not be logged religiously, however any training climbs/ hikes/ expeditions will be posted with pictures and videos. training will involve endurance training with weights, cardio, and varying length hikes in the White Mountains. The mountains here are not as nearly as high as anything on the list, however the trails are rugged and the weather is unpredictable even in summer. (Mt Washington long held the world record for wind speed until a higher speed was record in a typhoon a few years back).

Training will also vary depending on the next peak in line, as some require a different skill set.

Training goals for the next year:
-(weekly weight training- endurance > strength)
    -(weekly cardio training)
-climb 1500+ vertical feet per hour (currently average 1200) with 50 pound backpack
-complete mountaineering course in the Whites, including an overnight and a winter summit of Mt Washington
-Complete back to back 10+ mile hiking days with 4000+ feet of elevation gain each day
-complete back to back 15+ mile hiking days with 4000+ feet of elevation gain each day
-Summer 2020 mountaineering course in Washington including summit of Mt Rainier

Jan-March 2021: Climb Mt Kilimanjaro (exact date TBD)
    PRs: Back Squat- 410x1 / Front Squat- 320x1/ Bench- 325x1 / Deadlift- 505x1

    Training hike:
    Franconia Ridge Traverse (New Hampshire)
8.7 miles, summited 3 peaks, Mt Lafayette, Mt Lincoln and Little Haystack. 1.7 miles of exposed walking along the open ridge up top.

Ascent: 4.0 miles, 3550'. completed in 2:52, 1224 vertical feet per hour. No rest stops other than 2-3 brief stops to add or remove coat due to temperature.

beautiful fall day, autumn colors everywhere. the ascent was under morning cloud cover, however things cleared nicely on the ridge.

(for training hikes I will mostly be focusing on data for the ascent time)

This looks incredibly ambitions. You crushed it lifting back in the day so I have no doubt you will also accomplish this list of hikes as well.

Great to have you onboard! Definitely ambitious goal, but I like to think I gave myself plenty of time to accomplish. (and come up with the money- some of those expeditions are going to be expensive as hell)

Planning on a training climb this weekend if the weather window holds. I just purchased a sweet headlamp for trekking in the dark. I'm planning on an early start to try out the new headlamp. Good practice- most summit days on the big mountains start hours before dawn.
The one I have planned is 10 miles, lots of open ledge traversing. If I motivate I can watch sunrise from the summit.

Working on a website for this project, hoping to maybe pickup a sponsor or two a little further down the road.

Smashed a 9.6 mile climb Saturday. First 1.5 hours in the dark just using a headlamp. That was a new experience being alone in the woods like that.
Not the craziest elevation gain on this one, but lots of rugged ledges made for slow going (plus it had rained the night before so it was slippery as hell).
Views were incredible- sunrise, autumn leaves, crystal clear air.
The whole loop took me 6 hours, not bad considering how slow going the steep areas were due to less than favorable conditions (plus hiking in the dark is a tad slower).

Legs were a little tired the day after but not nearly as sore as usual for the day after a long one. My conditioning is definitely improving!

The taller peaks in NH have a fair amount of snow cover now, so the next climb is going to be in winter gear with spikes / traction.

Epic climb yesterday! Clear blue skies for miles!
This one clocked in at 8.9 miles and hit 2 summits, both over 4000’ elevation. Did the whole thing in 6.25 hours with breaks on both peaks to take pictures and snack.

I started about 90 min before sunrise and trekked most of the way up the first peak with a headlamp. Cold as FUUU. Above 3000’, the trail got icy. I carry some micro spikes in my Pack that strap right to your boot and are phenomenal for traction on the ice.

It’s a pretty sweet adrenaline rush scaling a steep ledge covered in ice with a substantial drop off right below you.

Hit the first summit shortly after sunrise then trekked down through the col to the second (higher) of the 2 peaks. It was a 3 state view, you could see Vermont to the west and Maine to the East. Absolutely incredible.

Conditioning is continuing to improve, only minimal soreness in the legs this morning. It’s hard to use speed as a factor right now as the conditions on the trail are starting to get winter-like.

Great trial run for a bunch of new gear I just bought- new 70L backpack, lots of winter clothes. Trying to find the right layering system to stay warm and not get drenched with sweat. Trial and error!

    Thumbs up

    Hoe Lee PHUCK woody....

    Was not expecting...

Now THIS is new and exciting! I'm in fosho!

Have you taken any wilderness survival courses? Know how to make the bow and create a fire? I'm sure you do, just wanna know the details of your planning. This is one of the craziest goals I've seen on here. 5 staring the thread now.

Edit- Dude wtf mind = blown at this its still sinking in, are you for real about this? I remember hitting 13k miles high in Peru and crawling to camp the last few hundred yards because of altitude sickness. Then slept for 12+ hours strait blackout mode....woke up much better to hit 15k, that's the highest I've been and if I tried that in the shape I'm in now I would barely make it if not die.

Finally a good thread on this website!!!!!

Awesome to have you here my man!

Altitude is no joke, that's why all of these expeditions take so long- your body needs that time to acclimatize. That must have been awesome hiking in South America! I'm really looking forward to climbing Aconcagua down there. Highest peak in the world outside of the Himalayas!

The first mountaineering course I'm planning this winter will involve overnight(s) on the mountain and winter camping skills. I intend to take advanced courses (mountaineering, avalanche rescue etc) further down the road. Honestly it's going to be a few years before I'm into the more technical climbs.
The first few will just require basic skills, conditioning and altitude will be the biggest factors.

When the longer, colder & more technical climbs come around, I'll have had plenty of training expeditions to hone my skills and take extra courses as needed. I don't want to show up to Denali or Everest a complete rookie chump like some of these fools do.

Full on winter conditions climb yesterday!
8.8 mile round trip, 3200 elevation gain (summit had elevation of 4675’). Completed in 5:45

Even the trailhead parking lot had snow cover so I wore spikes the entire trip. Most of the trail was packed down well, but there were some decent drifts above 4000’, along with plenty of ice.
This was the maiden voyage for my new winter hiking boots (Oboz Bridger 8s) and they kicked ass. Feet stayed dry and warm the whole route, even when kicking my way through snow drifts.

Brutal cold above tree line: single digit temps and crazy wind chill that dropped it to -40°F.
Views were incredible but it was too cold to hang around for long.

One month since my last trek, no good! Between work, family and weather conditions I hadn’t been able to find a suitable day until yesterday.

Did an 8.4 mile out and back up Mt Chocorua (third trek up this peak for 2019). Great rocky summit cone with steep scrambling. 5.5 hrs for the trip, 20 or so of that was on top taking pictures.

This Trek was full on winter conditions, snow on the way up and large sheets of ice on the summit push. I wore full crampons for this one and utilized an ice axe for the final bit.

The weather was awesome. Cold but there was minimal wind on top so I hung out on top for 20min or so. Didn’t see another soul until I was 1/3 of the way down. Great way to unplug from the real world for a bit. There’s nothing like sitting up there on the peak with no one else for miles.

I was worried about my condition where it’s been so long since I’ve hiked, but I did ok. Legs are Feeling surprisingly Good today, a little tired but not too sore. Hoping it’s going to be less than a month before my next one!

If someone has already broke trail, it's as easy as following the foot prints. after a fresh snow it's a bit different, but you can usually see where it is.

Exposed areas above treeline are where it gets tricky, just gotta hope the cairns are tall enough to stick out from the snow (but luckily the wind is so fierce on the higher peaks that it blows most of the snow off the summits)

Absolutely epic climb on Sunday. Perfect weather day right in between storm fronts. I took a run at Mt Washington, highest peak in the Northeast.
It always surprises me to see this peak mentioned on most top 10 most dangerous mountains in the world. The weather gets ridiculous- 3 different storm tracks converge over it, so things can go from blue sky and warm to completely socked in with clouds, snow and wind in a matter of minutes.

This was a full on mountaineering trek, doesn't even classify as a hike anymore. Wore 10 pt crampons from the parking lot all the way up.
Ice axe was a necessity- both as security knowing you can stop yourself if you fall and start sliding (the summit cone was a frozen snow field and extremely steep), and also to use as an anchor on some of the steeper walls.

8.6 miles, 4250+ feet of elevation gain. Completed in 6.25 hours which includes picture taking time on the summit. Not too bad!
The summit is crazy- all the frost and icicles are sticking out sideways because of the winds. Views were incredible, I wish I had more pictures but it was way too cold in the wind up there. After a few shots on the summit, my phone battery died from the cold.

I'm absolutely stoked about this one, loving having this accomplishment under my belt. Gives me a good feeling that I"m progressing towards the level I need to be at for the 7 summits.

    Enjoy the vid!

Thanks dude! That one was so challenging but so much fun.

I’m gonna hit that one again from a different route and then smash others around here with similar terrain. Honing my skills and still working on my winter layering setup for clothes. I have no problem getting warm enough, my problem is that I’m a bad sweater so I get soaked which is no good when the wind picks up.

I also want to do a 2-4 day expedition style climb up here so I get used to overnights in the super cold conditions. That trek will be with a guide & group, not gonna tackle that solo just yet.

Sights are still set on Kilimanjaro for Jan or feb of next year

Jj! great to see you're still around. how are things on the farm?

Definitely gets cold up there in the winter! can't wait for another climb, but the weather has been disagreeable every weekend. It's one thing being prepared for a storm if it hits, but it's foolish to purposely climb into one.

Absolutely stunning, blue bird day in the mountains yesterday. I did a shorter climb than usual to test out some new gear (better to do that on a small peak instead of on a ridge 5000’ up and 5 miles from the car!)

Climbed Mt Avalon, a little under 3500’ elevation. Round trip was just over 3.2 miles. It took me 2:34 to complete which includes nearly 30min on the summit enjoying the views.

I scored some new soft shell pants that have way more mobility than the crappy ski pants I was using previously (I blew the inseam of them out on Washington due to the crap mobility).

Very comfortable and they move great but I’m not 100% sure they’ll be warm enough if I get into heavy winds on an open ridge. I’m going to pick up a nice insulated pair with full side zips to stash in my pack that I can throw on if I get too cold. (I already carry a puffy down parka for extra cold conditions, but I haven’t had to use it yet.)

Also scored a sweet pair of mountaineering snow shoes. Teeth around the frame for traction plus crampon points right under your boots. They worked awesome on this trek, even on the steep section going up the summit cone.

Logged in a big trek Sunday- 9.6 miles over the Tripryamids in NH. It has 3 peaks (North, Middle and South) with only North & Middle being recognized as official NH 4000 footers (south peak is just a little spur from Middle, not enough prominence to classify on its own).

Weather Sunday was iffy- cold, windy, cloudy, chance of snow showers. Saturday was actually a clear blue sky day, however as part of my training I need to expose myself to poorer conditions, both for the mental aspect and to start pushing the limits of my gear.

Did the whole trek in 6:22, which I’m quite pleased with. The last 2 miles were steep as hell and quite challenging. No technical sections on this one, just a solid uphill battle. I wore snowshoes the entire time.

Wind was brutally cold up on the ridge, my I stayed moving enough at all times that I didn’t have to break out my down parka or pants from my pack.

I had a couple fingers go numb, which I attribute to my normal glove setup being a snug fit which will kill circulation when coupled with the cold. I’m going to monitor it, and buy a larger size if it’s a problem.

Luckily I have some big expedition mitts that I carry in my pack (the kind rated for the high Himalayan peaks & Everest). I threw those babies on and my hands were sweating in minutes. First time I’ve had to actually wear them- usually I just stash beers in them and the insulation keeps them from freezing hah

No videos today as the summits were socked in with clouds while I was up there.

Epic 10 mile round tripper up Mt Washington in New Hampshire, my 2nd ascent this winter season.

Different trail than last time- this one was steep as FUUUU up to the ridge, then it was 1.5 miles of open walking on a snowfield above treeline. so damn amazing

Bluebird skies yesterday, sunny, comfortable enough except for some decent wind gusts on the summit.

Snowshoes to treeline then crampons up to the summit

Legs and back are a little tired today, but conditioning is doing excellent. My pack is pretty heavy with all my winter gear, I need to weight it some time, but I"m guessing 30+ pounds.

you walk along this snowfield on the ridge for over a mile. it's a different world up there this time of year, you cant even explain the feeling

summit in sight, still a mile to go

    final .1 mile!

Looks like any early 2021 expeditions are going to be postponed- I’d have to book those now and I’m not putting that kind of cash on the line with this whole virus / panic going on.

In other news, weekend one of quarantine was productive: Ever since moving my home gym has been in pieces & buried under other crap. Plus cat litter box was in the same room so everything got filthy as fuk. The old kitty finally dropped dead @17yo last week (RIP puss) so I took this as a sign to clean up the junk room and get my gym back in working order.
Still a bit of tidy up / polish work to do, but it aiming to get in a few morning sessions ASAP.

    Long time between updates!
Treks have been tough with the whole pandemic crap. They had a bunch of the trailheads closed down for awhile (because clearly it’s dangerous being one of ten people in an area spanning miles and miles).

I neglected to post a mid April trip before the trailheads were shutdown. Did approx 7.4 miles over 2 peaks. It was right after a storm so I was breaking trail through 2-3 foot deep snow drifts up high. Absolutely brutal, never have I had such an intense leg workout.

Yesterday I did 9.2 miles over Mt Liberty and Mt Flume (both official NH 4000s).
Beautiful day! Below 3000’ it’s snow free. Above that there’s still a frozen monorail so it’s a mixed bag of conditions for the day. Temps were in the 30s when I left before sunrise. By the time I was above treeline it was 60 and sunny so I was shedding my winter layers to keep from overheating. Tough in that heat because I still have all my winter gear in my pack so it’s heavy as fack.
