When and how many times a day should I take a whey protein shake?

When and how many times a day would be best to have a protein shake? I'm 18 years old and am trying to gain both weight and muscle. I used to go gym once a day and so would have a shake with water (for quick recovery) after workout in the morning and a shake with milk (for extra calories) at lunch. Now I'm planning on going gym twice a day, once in the morning and late in the evening. Should I have this second shake after my second gym workout instead of lunch or perhaps 3 shakes a day?

IF you are not meeting your daily goals for protein through whole foods use a scoop to meet your goals. Timing serves little relevance in the spectrum of things.

It’s just there to help you meet your protein needs. So for example, if you need 180g of protein a day and taking 2 scoops ( for this example we will say a scoop is 25g protein ) helps you meet then great. If you can get the 180g through food then you don’t need it.

Above posters already got you covered with great advises.
But also, follow an established workout program. Sometimes more is not always better.

I like to eat whole food meals and shakes, and liquid egg whites. there's a massive bodybuilder well not massive but 250 lbs? solid muscle and he would drink all his meals as shakes for a while because he didnt have time to eat whole foods and/or it was more convenient. I think amino acids are aminos whether they come from whey protein or chicken, beef. That said a variety of protein is best , but if yes whey protein is fine however many times a day you want to take it.
