Study Spanish or Filipino for a second language at college?

I am currently a third year student at San Diego State University. I am trying to get an Econ degree and as part of the graduation requirement for this course, I need to complete three semesters of a foreign language.

I grew up with Filipino parents who spoke Tagalog so I am familiar with a few words, beyond this I know jack **** since I spoke English my entire life. I have taken two semesters of this class (basically introductory classes) and I haven't learned much. The only reason I passed was because the professor offered a huge curve every quiz. The textbook was written by him and it isn't the best; whenever I come to him for some help he doesn't always understand what I am asking. My parents don't exactly have the teaching capabilities for this so going for them isn't an option either.

I did take two years of Spanish in high school but I didn't learn anything. My teacher was incompetent and just assigned us bookwork to keep us busy while she does online shopping on her computer. She didn't care if our work was accurate- as long as you filled in the blanks you'd get credit. She had tenure in her position so any complaints to her didn't get by.

So brahs I need your advice: should I deal with one more semester of Filipino or should I start over and do Spanish? I graduated HS with some credits from AP tests and what not so I am bound to graduate within the next 3 semesters (assuming I don't fail any classes). If I stick to Filipino, I am going to have a hell of a time since I need to make a presentation 100 percent in that language. Most of the other students have a grasp of what is written whenever they read a passage in Filipino; meanwhile I don't have a clue half the time.

FWIW, I live in California so Spanish might be helpful overall.

Overall Spanish will be more beneficial. You can always use Border Patrol as a fallback job

I definitely was leaning toward Spanish.

Are you bilingual yourself? How long did it take you to be capable of having conversations in Spanish? Even though my Spanish teacher was far from qualified, I did read the textbook and found it to be easier overall than Filipino.

I'm not trying to be lazy here. My Spanish teacher genuinely made no attempt in teaching us how to converse in the language. 80 percent of the tests was just learning basic vocabulary like colors and food. The other 20 percent was random facts about Spanish-American history.

Regarding Filipino, I learned more than I did in Spanish class but the book only covered half of what was spoken about in class. My professor doesn't record our lectures and he only does office hours by appointment.

It's going to depend on your school. If you've already tested at a certain level in Spanish, they might not let you go back and do the beginner easy stuff.

Honestly, if your main goal is getting out, if you only need to do one more semester of Tagalog, I'd knock that out rather than three semester of Spanish. Though you may need to invest some time in getting training from something other than your prof. Maybe Duolingo or some other free language software available online. And even if your parents can't teach you Tagolog, they can probably coach you on proper pronunciation, and such. So long as you don't have to take questions with your presentation, that would probably be easier to going back to almost nothing. There's no guarantee that a college Spanish teacher will be as slack as the Spanish teacher you had in high school.

I understand OP, I did accounting some teachers were **** and others were amazing, and others were easy as fuk and not worth the time.

Since your degree is in economics, I don't think you will even need to learn either language (maybe I am talking out of my ass here). Jobs that I see posted online for accounting (as an example) pay much lower if the job requires Spanish speaking.

The only time I spoke Spanish at work was when I worked at McDonald's.

Take Spanish, unless you plan to live in or travel frequently to the Philippines.
Spanish can give you access to many countries and their corresponding opportunities. It will also be much easier for you to find opportunities to practice (and then maintain) your language skills.
Never rely fully on your classes to learn -- it is imperative that you find native speakers and spend time with them daily.

Tagalog is a useless language to learn but it sounds like your route to finishing faster and with less work.

Even if you come to the Philippines, everyone involved in MNC's and the service industries speak / read / write English!

You are not going to learn a language in a classroom. Since you only need one more semester of Tagalog it would be ridiculous to take three semesters of Spanish where you will also likely have to give a full presentation in Spanish at some point to complete. Google translate works pretty well and Filipinos can be hired very cheaply to translate a presentation.

I have taken three years of Spanish and all I know is Como estas? Me llama Brad Pitt. E tu? Muy bien, gracias. Dos cervezas por favor. Just like everyone else that has taken three years of classroom Spanish.

If you want to learn a language that provides value in the business world beyond being a McDonald's manager, learn Mandarin.

You're a Filipino by blood so take Spanish lol.
You should be able to learn how to understand Filipino by listening to your parents and maybe trying to talk to them in Tagalog.

If you can understand that without google translate then you don't need to take Filipino.
