27 male Flatbed Trucker having trouble with dieting.

I’ve been a trucker for 2 1/2 years, and in that time I’ve gained a total of 75 pounds. I’m 5’10 and I currently weigh 280 pounds. I moved to flatbed because I wanted a job that required me to be more active, and so far I love it, but I’m still gaining weight (I work my ass off 3 hours and then drive for three days). I’ve decided to work on my diet first and eat healthier. Easier said than done. My relationship with food has always been rocky. I was the fat kid in middle school. I was bullied a lot because of it. Having an abusive stepfather at home didn’t help either. Because of it, I’d comfort eat. I eventually lost the weight playing football and managed to keep it off for 8 years. Even started going to the gym 5 nights a week. When I got my cdl, I realized that going to the gym would be few and far between. I’ve tried weight loss programs, including one made specifically for truckers, but I can’t seem to stay on track. For me, dieting to the hardest thing about weight loss. Whenever I try counting calories, I eventually binge eat everything on my truck. I try cutting sugar and drinking only water I can never stick to it. It doesn’t help that 95% of food at truck stops is bad for you either. Any truckers on here have any dieting tips? I’m thinking about trying keto also. Anyone have experience in that?

I think the problem is the binge eating bit. What you're binging on is probably unhealthy stuff, why not eat delicious fruits instead. There's lots of exotic fruits out there. So if you feel the itch eat them instead and it won't affect the weight you've lost.

In other words stock up on your favourite fruits.

However binge eating anything isn't healthy so you have to eventually try to control that.

WDE - I agree with Jay, just start making small changes with the food you eat. Switch out chips for an apple or two if you are eating a ton. Sedentary jobs blow, I have one too, and in my office I just swapped out all the terrible food for better stuff. I did it slowly so it wasn't super painful all at once.

Occupations vary, but the basics are the same. I mean, it's not like you're an Astronaut orbiting Earth with limited access to foods.

I think it's smart to start by addressing the food issue. When you are on the road, do you have a fridge or electric cooler in your truck? I would start by shopping and food prepping on your off days so that when you want to eat, you have plenty of foods on hand that help you stay within your calorie goal. Vegetables, fruit, boiled eggs, cooked chicken/turkey/beef, whole grain bread, etc. At your current size your calorie goal* will be high enough that you can still eat a good amount of food as opposed to cutting out so much that you are likely to binge. That's where a lot of overweight/obese people go wrong--cut calories way low because we're desperate to lose weight and then have a rebound binge. The trick is to find your happy medium.

*Be sure to read the DON'T LOOK PAST THE BASICS thread and follow its link to the thread about determining your calorie goal and fat/protein minimums.
