    Losing motivation

Im going to try to explain this quickly. I am 18 years old, a junior and high school, and this year I started taking a weight training class. It was stressful at first lifting at school, but I got into the groove. Unfortunately I haven't made any gains all year. My parents parents dont have much money but they are sending me to a private school and getting ripped off and basically I never have much food. For lunch usually I bring these canned tuna pouches and they only have like 90 calories. Generally I bring a small thing of cereal, maybe some granola bars, and a soda so I end up having a few hundred calories at school. When I get home I generally grab another soda and dont feel like eating but eventually I eat some frozen taquitos or ramen something. Then I have dinner, usually something small. I dont really think im eating enough, and I'm definitely not sleeping enough. I have depression and the night is the only time I have to myself to do the things I want to do so I end up staying up late and sleeping for only a few hours. On top of that, the number of days I am going to school (and thus working out) is diminishing. Im skipping school a few times a month now either because I woke up too late or Im just not feeling it. Basically I am missing a lot of workouts.

The reason I am writing all of this is because today my mom told me that I looked skinny, and that upset me a lot. Since winter break I've skipped about half of the days I had weight training, and I havent been eating right either because I have nothing to eat or I feel sick. I normally weigh between 110 and 120 (I'm 5'4 or maybe 5'5 on a good day) and right now I am 115 so I dont really think I lost weight or anything, maybe my muscles are just flat from not lifting. Its really upsetting because I just started getting more popular at school and feeling confident, and of course whenever things are looking up for me someone has to crush my ****ing hopes.

I feel really demotivated, both with lifting and with life in general right now. Last year I worked out at home, so I could just sleep through class and if my stomach hurt I could just sit there and hold it. Now I have to lift everyday even if im about to pass out or fall asleep. Im thinking about just switching to public school for my last year and a half or even dropping out. FML

Is there a counselor at school that you can talk to? Tell him/her what's going on.

I don't think your Mom was trying to crush your spirit/hope. AND you are not popular because you are, or are not, skinny, or buff, or shredded, etc. If you're gaining friends at school, it's because you are likeable and cool to hang with.

I really do think to need to talk to someone. And you need to EAT.

    You're not eating enough bud.

You're 18. Your body is an industrial furnace. You need to feed that and feed it good. There's no other time in your life where you'll be able to do this, so figure it out and tell your mom that eating is more important than going to a private school.

Thanks for the advice...I started counting calories again yesterday but its stressful because sometimes I dont have enough food.

The thing about me going to private school is that I dont do jack **** in school. I spend half the day in the bathroom vaping and honestly im sick of having to jump through a bunch of ridiculously arbitrary hoops for a piece of paper just so I can live comfortably in the future. Its just money down the drain for my parents and I feel bad about it. As soon as i get my license i might switch whether they like it or not because its better for both me and them.

I do think that you’re trying your best to cope with a less than ideal situation. Going to school is important but if you’re having to give up EATING just to go to a private school, that’s not realistic. Your parents can’t afford it and I think you should find a school that fits you and your goals and lifestyle. What is your major, do you have a dream or goal you’re working toward academically?

I also wanna have a big sister moment and tell you that reading about you just these short paragraphs remind me HARD of me at 18. It’s very important to have a social life and have fun while you can, you’re 18 so live it up. Just don’t do anything that would make your ‘future-self’ hate you. I made a lot of decisions that was really just me trying to mask my depression and be the most popular and skinny. Understandable at that age, but not rewarding in the long term. Definitely apply yourself in class and go see a therapist and just talk it out. Good luck to you!

It seems like you're getting lean but losing fat in the process. You need to eat more so that you could build mass. Don't be discouraged just eat more okay?

Dude, I know the struggle. As a teen I made no gains due to bad nutrition.

Recently, in an effort to save money, but also out of convenience, I've been drinking weight gainer. The calories per dollar are pretty d*mn good. Same for milk if you can stomach it.

^^^ THIS!! Talk to someone you trust...whoever that is!! Most likely, your sleep and appetite will improve after you've sat down with a counselor and your parents, and have gone over some possible solutions for your family's financial situation right now. I'm more concerned that you're skipping school sometimes (back in the day, I did to, when I was "depressed"). It doesn't make you "weak" for asking for advice. Good luck!!

Thanks for all of the advice.

I really wish I could quit weight training class because I'm too ****ing hungry, sore, and tired all of the time. I dont want to go to school anymore specifically because of the class, i dont think theres any way I can quit though

I don't know what you're schedule is like, but if this particular class is causing you that much "angst," maybe it's not the right time to take up weight lifting in this school. You need to talk to your parents or maybe one of your best friend's parents about how "down" you feel! That should be addressed first and foremost. Then, I think everything else will work itself out (peaceful sleep, healthy appetite, motivation, etc.). Maybe you'd feel more comfortable or inspired training at a local gym (completely different environment) instead of letting go of your fitness goals....but you need to go to school and get an education!!
