Question Should I bulk or cut?

    Hello,

So I recently got back from holidays and have not been working out for over a month.

I've read through multiple threads in this site with people having the same dilemma as me and there seems to be a conflicting interest as to whether they should cut or bulk. Thus, I figured I should start my own thread and ask since everyone's body is different.

I will be turning 27 years old next month, I am 6 foot, and currently weighing at 177 lbs. Based on my brand new Tanita scales, my body fat percentage is 18.5% (although it did fluctuate to 17% during the evening).

I've read that most people start cutting once their BFP is above 16% so my current BFP is a tad-bit high - hence questioning whether I should cut. However, I have been called the "tall and lanky" guy on so many occasions that I'm worried a cut would make me look like a skeleton and lose whatever muscle mass that I have (if any!). At the same time, I also do not like the gut and love handles that I am currently rocking and a bulk would almost certainly make it worse.

I have uploaded pictures in the link below for reference.

I was thinking of dropping about 11 pounds of weight and try to get my BFP to around 13% before going on a clean bulk.

    What do you guys think?

    Cut to reveal what?
Society has varying and conflicting interests; what is called objectivity is the disguise of one of these interests - that of neutrality. But neutrality is a fiction in an unneutral world. There are victims, there are executioners, and there are bystanders... and the 'objectivity' of the bystander calls for inaction while other heads fall.

Obviously I lack the muscle mass but it would be nice to shed that belly fat before packing on some size.

Nonetheless, I am very open to suggestions and critiques; I am a sponge absorbing as much info as I can

7 months ago I started roughly where you are now (perhaps I was a little leaner but not by much). I went on a mild calorie deficit and did weight + cardio 6 days a week. After 3 months I got the ABS but everything else looked like poo because I lacked the muscle mass.

My advice? Read the following thread:

    All the best!

Thanks - that thread really helped out a lot.

In terms of bulking, the thread mentions to gain around 25 lbs (1 lbs per fortnight) before cutting. I was just wondering, if I were to put on 25 lbs, what would be a reasonable body fat percentage at the end of the cycle?

I would like to know so I can monitor my BFP and adjust if I am gaining too much fat rather than muscle.

You should definitely cut. I had the same problem as you when I first started (skinny-fat). I looked pretty skinny but was at 18-19% body fat. Just remember that when you cut, fat cells never die, only shrink. So if you're bulking at a high body fat percentage, then you're only adding on more fat and making it harder for yourself to cut in the future.

If you cut right now, you'll look skinny, but you'll have muscle tone. If you lean bulk at around 10-12% body fat, you'll see more visible gains and be happier. Bulking at 18.5% will just make you end up at around 20%+ body fat at the peak of your bulk. Do some research on bulking and you'll see that bulking at a lower body fat percentage is far more optimal.

Thank you all for the advice.

I think I will go for a cut until July and try to get my body fat% to around 13%. I will try to lose around 1 pound a week. I understand that I have very little mass, but the gut and love handles is really bothering me and a bulk will only make me more depressed and agitated to cut. Plus I don't think I'm that underweight so if I can cut to around 165 lbs I think it should be fairly quick to get back to my current weight within a few months (this time adding more mass instead of fat).

I will then go on a clean bulk for about 1.5 years, starting in July, and try to gain about 0.5 pounds per week. Hopefully by then my fat% would only be around 16-17% which I will then cut to around 10-12%, rinse and repeat.

Hope I'll be able to do this right...

This. Good advise. Bulking at lower BF% is more productive. Lean people have better insulin sensitivity which delivers more nutrient to your muscle during bulk. Smaller belly lower heart disease.
