Arrow Blue Star Nutraceuticals Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream Review

    Blue Star Nutraceuticals
    Iso-Smooth - Vanilla Dream

Gym God, from Blue Star Nutraceuticals, was incredibly generous and hooked me up with a 2lb tub of Blue Star's high quality protein blend - Iso-Smooth - in the 'Vanilla Dream' flavor, after I had expressed my interest in the product in his Company Promotion thread. Being a fan of blend proteins, Iso-Smooth had caught my eye quite a few times while browsing through the store, although I was always hesitant to fork out the cash to try something that I hadn't personally seen much feedback from at all on the boards, even though it had been rated highly in the store. So I am very thankful and appreciative of him giving me the opportunity to test out the product for free, especially since it was shipped all the way from Canada - which is definitely not cheap!

Since I never really have shakes anymore, for my initial review of the product, I made a bowl of 'sludge', which is my most common use of protein powder along with baking and cooking in recipes. My thoughts are below..

The powder itself has a very fine and fluffy, yet dense, texture. Due to it's density, the powder tends to stick together, and is not as 'free-flowing' as a standard/basic Whey protein, but I have found this to be common between blends containing Milk Protein Isolate, and it is not an issue whatsoever - merely an observation. However, even with the 'sticky' attribute of the powder, it still moves smoothly and freely in and out of the scooper, making it simple and convenient to take a scoop from the tub.

    Profile:

Iso-Smooth is an extremely high quality, high-end protein blend, comprised of exclusively of four Isolated forms of protein: Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate, Egg Isolate, and Micellar Casein. That right there, was a huge pulling factor for me, being a fan of protein blends. It's also Cold Processed, which is arguably one of the best and most quality efficient forms of processing. Although the ratio of the blend is not given, so we don't know for sure the percentage of each protein source we are getting, based on Whey Protein Isolate being the first listed in the blend we can assume that it is the most abundant. WPI is also likely the most expensive source of protein included in the blend, so it being first shows that Blue Star Nutraceuticals definitely did not skimp on the consumer by providing low quality, cheap sources of protein.

In each 35g serving of Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream, there are 135 calories, with only 1g of fat, only 1g of carbohydrates (0.3g of fiber), and a whopping 30g of protein. So as you can see, the protein percentage is incredibly high. There is also added EFAs (Essential Fatty Acid) in the blend, such as Flax Seed, and CLA, although obviously it can't be very much due to only 1g each of both fat and carbs in the blend. Also included is a Digestive Enzyme complex - although I doubt anyone should have real problem digesting purely isolated proteins - still a nice addition though, as always. There's no doubt about it, the nutritional profile is stellar, and easily one of the best coming from a blend in regards to pure protein content. Especially great for anyone cutting, pre-contest dieting, or simply looking for a blend with the highest protein content and least amount of fats and carbs.

    Mixability:
Like I stated above, I don't really do shakes these days, and much prefer making sludge bowls with add-ins like cereal, and fruit, or cooking with my protein, so I decided to go with a bowl of sludge using just the Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth mixed with Almond Milk for my initial review. Typically with my other blends that I use, I do about 2 oz of liquid per scoop, which is perfect for a nice pudding consistency since they tend to mix up quite thick. So I tossed 1.5 scoops of Iso-Smooth in a bowl, and measured out 3 oz of Almond Milk, and began to mix. I ended up only having to use a very small amount of the liquid to make a decent sludge, as it mixed up much thinner than expected - very similar to that of a pure WPI. It was incredibly easy to mix though, and dissolved quite rapidly, so the mixability is great. Not the best for sludge (which is fine) due to the thinness, but perfect for those looking for a quick and easy mixing protein shake.

Product after mixing, popping in freezer, and taking out after roughly 25-30 minutes

    Taste:
The Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth has quite a unique flavor when it comes to Vanilla flavors. I've tried a good number of Vanilla flavored proteins by now, and what I have found is they typically have one of three 'types' of Vanilla flavoring: Vanilla Bean, Butterscotch tones, or Cake Batter. If I had to try and describe the Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream, I would say it is a nice mix between both a Butterscotch tone of Vanilla with hints of Cake Batter as well. The flavoring is somewhat light, which can be expected from such a lean nutritional profile, but even then it had a distinct flavor unlike other Vanillas I have tried, and was really quite good - definitely one of the better Vanillas I've had. Overall, I think Blue Star did a great job on the flavoring, especially considering how lean and protein rich the profile is.

    Price:
There's really no other way to put it - Iso-Smooth is quite expensive, that's just the honest truth. Yes, it is made with some of the highest quality, and most expensive raw materials and processing available, but still it is likely out of many of the average gym-goers' budgets when it comes to buying protein powder, which is one of the reasons I originally shied away. Here on BB.com, the 2lb tub is $44.99 ($1.80/serving) and the 5lb tub is $89.99 ($1.34/serving). Factoring in the 10% discount code, that still puts the 5lb tub at $80.99 ($1.20), which is still a pretty hefty chunk of change for a tub of protein. It is quite a bit more expensive than the other blends in the store, but very comparable price-wise to AllMax IsoFlex, and when calculated for price per gram of protein, they are both about $0.04 a gram. So if you are a regular purchaser of IsoFlex, and looking for something new, this is right up your alley, but for me – honestly the price is a pretty big turn-off.

    Overall:
It’s clear as day – Blue Star Nutraceutical’s Iso-Smooth is an exceptionally high quality protein blend, and one of the best on the market when it comes to ingredients and macronutrient profiles. It’s superb. It tastes great, mixes well, and has a stellar make-up to boot. But the price certainly can and will shy many customers away, as it is also one of the most expensive proteins available in the store. If you’re looking for something with the highest protein content with minimum fats and carbs, and purest ingredients, then I would definitely recommend you to give Iso-Smooth a shot – if price is not a concern. You won’t be disappointed. But if price is a concern, I would have a hard time justifying a recommendation over a much cheaper blend with a slightly less ‘perfect’ profile.

Overall, I think it’s an excellent protein, just a little bit expensive for most.

Thanks again to Gym God for the opportunity to try out the Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth! Since he was kind enough to send me out a full 2lb tub, I will trying this out in a few different cooking/baking recipes over the next couple of weeks, and will post thoughts and pictures on those as I go along.

Thanks man! Haha, nothing against that flavor - actually enjoy it, but I don't think I can recall coming across a vanilla that tasted like Legit Ice Cream... Trutein Vanilla tastes like Breyer's Vanilla Bean Ice Cream IMO, which is the 'Vanilla Bean' type I mentioned

    Haha awesome

And I agree, it's great to see. Especially since I'm more of a fan of Vanilla flavors also.

Chocolate doesn't seem too hard to mess up, but somehow Vanilla flavors used to end up turning out horrible quite often. It's good that they are finally figuring out how to do it well. Now, if only more could figure out Strawberry...

Thanks bro. Yeah it's definitely one of the better Vanillas I've had, and also probably the best profile I've had/seen - but there's no denying it is quite a bit expensive.

Thumbs up Iso-Smooth Pancakes with Iso-Smooth "Syrup"

Okay, so for my first cooking test with the Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth, I decided to make a batch of pancakes. I like to make protein pancakes quite often, so I figured this would be a great way to test it out, since it's something I'm used to making.

My first attempt didn't go so well.. Again, I had forgotten that this blend mixes much thinner than my typical protein blends I use for pancakes, and I added too much water to my recipe. This caused the batter to come out much too thin, and when I tried to cook the pancakes, they didn't rise at all and didn't turn out too 'aesthetically pleasing'. Tasted great, though.

So I decided to give it another attempt, this time remembering to use less water. I also decided to change things up a bit and threw a kiwi into the blender with the rest of my batter. It gave the pancakes an awesome sweet 'kick' to the flavor, as well as a slightly different texture. To finish it off after cooking, I mixed up 1/2 a scoop of Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth in 4 oz of Almond Milk and popped it in the freezer for bit to use as a 'syrup' or topping for the pancakes. Overall, the second attempt turned out great, and was an awesome way to use the Iso-Smooth.

    Ingredients:

1.5 Cups Kashi Go Lean Cereal
    1.5 Scoops Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream
1 Whole Egg, 1 Egg White
~6-8 oz of water to reach desired consistency
    1 Medium Kiwi, peeled

Throw everything into a blender, blend until completely smooth and equal to a typical pancake batter consistency. Cook on Griddle on Medium heat just as you would a normal pancake. Enjoy

Cool Iso-Smooth Cheesecake with Maple Flavored Icing and Strawberries

Next up, I decided to bake up a cheesecake with the Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth, as cheesecakes are one of my all time favorite desserts. The cheesecake came out perfect - was actually probably one of the best ones I've made. It had an excellent texture, which I think was from the thinner mixing characteristic of the Iso-Smooth powder which allowed if to 'fluff' up a bit.

To top it off, I made a Maple flavored icing with a 2/3 cup of Fage Greek Yogurt and a little less than one full scoop of Vanilla Dream Iso-Smooth. After mixing the two, I added a little bit of Maple Extract to give the nice maple flavoring to it, and evenly topped the cake - and to finish it off, I sliced up some strawberries and spread them across the top. Absolutely delicious!

Talking Iso-Smooth French Toast Bagels! With Toppings..

On Thanksgiving day, I wanted to get in a good workout in the morning before indulging in the holiday feast, as I did last year. Since I personally don't do my best training fasted on an empty stomach, I wanted to get a small/light breakfast in me before I hit the gym so I had some fuel to run on and get a great workout...

So I searched my fridge, and noticed I had a little bit of Egg Beaters to finish off, so I thought to myself about what to make, and ended up whipping up a very tasty, quick, and perfectly satiating plate of Iso-Smooth French Toast Bagels, which helped fuel me for a great workout. This literally took no more than 15-20 minutes to completely prepare/cook, tasted delicious, and was the perfect light pre-workout meal.

French Toast Bagels with PB2 Peanut Butter and Kiwi slices in the middle, drizzled with SF Maple Syrup and topped with Whipped Cream.

    Ingredients for Egg Batter:

1/2 Cup Egg Beaters (or 2 eggs should work)
    1 Scoop Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream
    Dash of Cinnamon
    Splash of Milk

2 Thomas Bagel Thins for the 'toast'

Warm up a Griddle Pan on Medium Heat on the stove. While heating, mix up the French Toast Egg Batter in a bowl with the ingredients listed above. The Iso-Smooth mixes very easily into the Egg Beaters. Once mixed, separate each bagel into halves, and poke the 'crust-side' of each bagel half all over which will allow it to soak up more Egg Batter. When the pan is ready, dip each halve in the batter to soak, and place on the pan. There should be barely any batter remaining in the bowl - pour this in the center of each bagel while cooking to fill the 'hole'.

While one side is cooking, I mixed up 3 TBSP PB2 with water into a creamy peanut butter, and then mixed 1/3 scoop of Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream into that, which gave it more volume, bumped up the protein, and gave it a unique vanilla twist. Flip the bagels to the other side. I then peeled and sliced a kiwi while the other side cooked.

Once the french toast is fully cooked, place on a plate, top with the PB2 mixture and Kiwi slices, and close the bagel. Drizzle with SF Maple Syrup, drop some whipped cream on top and you're done! Less than 15-20 minutes for a delicious, quick, and light pre-workout meal

Oh SNAP! You definitely put a new spin on utilizing a protein powder, and in this case the ISO-SMOOTH!

Haha yup, I thought - "Why not try this?" And it ended up turning out very well.

The profile of Iso-Smooth is definitely a favorite aspect of mine about the product, as it allows you to really boost up the protein content in 'everyday' recipes, without boosting the fat and carbs along with it.

Haha! Nah, I only really bake/cook on my rest days when I have a little more spare time, and then it allows me to get get creative and come up with new ideas.

Bob's got some skills.. perhaps we will have to have protein powder bake-off between Chef Bob, Chef Sawa, and myself

    Arrow Iso-Smooth Vanilla 'Lava' Cake

Next up, I decided to make a quick, simple, yet delicious microwave 'Lava' cake using the Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream. Very simple recipe, and easy to make, and only requires a few dishes, some PAM, and a microwave. I cook the cake just long enough to make it fluffy and 'cake-like' around the edges, but leave it nice and gooey in the middle like a Volcano - thus "Lava". To top it off, I sliced up a kiwi (if you can't tell by now, I love these ) and placed it around the cake, and whipped up a cinnamon strawberry 'icing/glaze' using a half scoop of Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream and a couple ounces of Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk, along with a couple dashes of cinnamon and some Strawberry extract to achieve the flavor I was looking for.

Again, this was a great use for the Iso-Smooth, as it allowed me create a healthy, high-protein version of a treat that people often crave.

    Ingredients:
    1/2 cup Pancake Mix
    1 Egg or 2 Whites
    1 & 1/2 Scoops Iso-Smooth Vanilla Dream
    1/8 Tsp Baking Powder, rounded
    Splenda

Mix up the pancake mix, Iso-Smooth, Baking powder and splenda in a bowl, stirring in water until you have a completely mixed soupy sludge consistency - not too thick, but not too watery and thin. Completely mix in the Egg/Whites using a fork until they are fully mixed and broken in. Once the batter is ready, Spray a tupperware dish with PAM, and transfer the batter to the greased dish. Place in microwave and cook for about 3 minutes on 60% power, watching to make sure it is still gooey in the center when finished.

Once cooked, flip the tupperware dish onto a plate, which the cake should then slide right out, top with your desired ingredients, and enjoy

Wow! It's great to see you add fruit to your dishes. Great for presentation and additional micronutrients / antioxidants.
